Re: Solid State or Tube preamp?

Post by wabun on Thu Mar 11, 2010 4:56 pm

Well, there was one time I went to a friend's place for music practice and he had a pair of Tannoy Wesminsters tucked away in each corner of his livingroom. His Audionote Conquerers were out of commission because they blew a valve or something so in place of the Audionote was an inexpensive Dared VP16. 16watts maybe? I really don't know. But I must say I was impressed with the combination. Tonal accuracy aside, the combo was able to deliver realistic bass without bloom or boom and uncoloured midrange. Quite the opposite of my impression on valve gear and very modern sounding. Of course I wasn't truely satisfied with the performance but to rate it, i'd give it 4 out of 5 stars. So, coincidently this also answers the questions on Dared that some of you are asking.

wow..Tannoy Wesminsters singing with uncoloured midrange ?
quite a surprise. Normally good vocal speaker such as LS3/5A, impres the listener by adding "color" to the vocal..modern stuff which reproduce audio frequency faithfully only sing without ajinomoto, clean and clear like a cup of RO water - but tasteless for some ear.

So, to uncolour the coloured, that could mean the Dared is overly lean then???

TLKoo, you want to meet up to verify? Ok, if you can hammer down Chopin's Polonaise-Fantaisie Op.61 in all it's intended splendour at my chosen time and venue, then i'll buy you a latte and you can make a trip up Penang to visit my friend with the Wesminsters and to my family house to have a go at the Levinsons.

Anyway, solid state, valve, hybrid, whatever, I hereby declare that nothing ever sounded better to my ears than my late uncle's Bösendorfer. No Krell, Audio Research, DCS, Mark Levinson, Goldmund, Grand Utopia, German Physic, YG Anat, nothing and I mean nothing comes close.

Hmmm... Maybe that Grand Utopia did actually come quite close. But still not within a 1/4 mile! tongue

azri,
No,sadly I do not listen any of those.
My music is mostly Bread,CCR and other 70's oldies.

As far as the new stuff goes, I'm madly in love with my
Stacey Kent albums.

12au7 is a low mu preamp tube,so what is the pwer tube here as you wrote?
So what are we talking here azri ?

Landy....

It's a complement that i was giving to your goodself, in short well versed.... lets not take it any further then a complement. Sorry that you took it in the wrong direction.......

Back to the Dared....

Getting the Yaqin Buffer in between the AMP & CDP has made lots of difference; the music is "refined but not polished ".

I did audition the "Dared VP 16 (push pull ) - 18 Watter" tube amp ( overall -6 tubes )hooked up to a Marantz CDP and Wharfedale 9.2 speakers.

The initial was a bit laid back but as the tubes got warmer, vocals were nimble / to the fore, piano / saxophone was at the mid level and the bass was tight and controlled. Everything was clear and not over powering or supressing.

Changing the stock "tubes" could bring this a notch or two up.

cheers

Landy,
my apologies.
Uncle was just simply being cheeky
Now you've already gone and called me "uncle"

My tones on my guitar amps have never seen overdrive though.
Clean bell like notes are always what I'm after.
My '63 Bandmaster sings those notes for me sweetly,
together with my '70 telecaster.

That being said, s/state guitar amps never really made history as
far as I know.
Only one I'd make an exception to here is the Roland Jazz Chorus (2x12), the ones made in Japan.
However, I do come across plenty of junked s/state guitar amps.

azri,

that idris mahmud ah. Tell la.
But I am not a 'real' jazz fan.Only when the mood hits me la.

Stacey kent is about the only new jazz singer other than Eva Cassidy, Emi Fujita that I listen to
I used to think that Karen Carpenter will be the only female singer
I would want to listen to.
But times marches on.
"ol man", maybe I am, tapi jangan la panggil sampai macam tu.
Senior gentleman, more refined way of calling me.
We all respect one another here on the forum okay.

Hey Mister Teleman, what's with the apologies??? It's not necessary at all. I was being cheeky too. Where's the fun in being so serious??? You can call me aunty if you like Very Happy I do have nephews and nieces you know. It's a big family.

I guess in every internet forum, sub cultures and sensitivities exists and I need to observe and learn the culture here before I thread further with my bezerko style of banter. I may have brushed a few sensitive nerves here and there but not you I hope Mr. Teleman. Razz

The human ear generally craves distortion of some form. It makes some truths easier to accept ...

And the male senses usually go into overdrive at the sight of a female ... as appears to be the case over the last few postings!

Ms Landy,

The amp or rather pre-amp is a creation of Mr Wabun which was reviewed in the local rag a couple months back. Perhaps you could google for 'Jumpan' or look up The Star audio review..

i think the preamp might sound good on krell monos. separation, dynamics, warmth, speed...The best of both worlds. hmm... i think i better stop here. Its like pouring more kerosene on fire. Coz then the amp might catch fire in hondas, or even worse, the hondas might accidentally roll over these amps, again  : )

Me,
I like plenty of knobs so I can color as much as my heart pleases.
Bass knob, treble knob, balance knob, high cut, low cut,
high boost, low boost,loudness, etc...........
Call me old school, but it's something I grew up with.

So all those old Sansuis,Pioneers and Marantz integrated amps always look ssooooooooo attractive to me

I fancied them too, more knobs the merrier..until a point in time when simplicity is really all I needed.

cmboy,

Sadly, I was enjoying my 1974 Luxman Integrated until recently when it gave up the ghost on me.
I'll really miss her with that fabulous Luxman warmth.
Not to mention the all wood casing, knobs and lever switches everywhere.
Guess I never really grew up.Sigggggh!

cheers,
teleman51

Knobs never mind. Some remote controls like with AV receivers can be daunting and more complicated than a scientific calculator till you read up the instruction manual.
