Attack on www.h1f1.blogspot.com

Post by catal2002 on Fri Sep 24, 2010 5:57 pm

Hi guys,

It had been a year since I have started this blog but until recent due to my relocation to Kuala Lumpur things started to slow down. Since then I have seek Uncle Vic and Eric to help on writing and now lead to the attack.

The attacker 1st comment clearly shows the disagreement on using subwoofer but with vulgar words.
The 2nd post is more polite stating where he dislikes.
The 3rd comment is entirely vulgar words (i I have deleted it).
The 4th comment too personnel.vulgar words and none hifi related at all.

The attacker self claim as Keith From Johor Bahru, Malaysia and now is in Singapore(No sign on is required for anonymous so his name might not be real)

Idon’t have any experience at dealing with this and many friends give all kinds of suggestion like:
1) Ignore
2) Delete what I like to delete
3) Comment available for sign in only
4) Disable comment function
5) Stop writing blog, delete all.(Did I do it so bad?)For your information, I did not receive any money from any manufacturer or retailer.
Please advice before things going uglier.

I sincerely apologies to any reader who may have mislead by my blog

Catal2002,

The attacks look similar to the previous attacks happened to Uncle Vic in Hifi4sale by the Hifi4sale famous and very knowledgeable You-Know-Who forummer few months ago.

Re: Attack on www.h1f1.blogspot.com

Post by WongKN on Sat Sep 25, 2010 1:11 am

Lau,

I know how you feel. I or my site (automobile related) have been the target of malicious individuals before. It is easy to advice when one is the 3rd party but when one is the victim, the feeling is entirely different.

I'll just related two incidents and how I somehow lucked into dealing with it.

1. I started a feedback column on the (then) 'new' Civic a few years ago in my website and this individual started posting inflammatory comments on the column. What I learned then is that I -SHOULD NOT- delete. The thing is our reaction is EXACTLY what the attacker desires. They might just do it for kicks or they might have a beef with something or someone. So it's like the child throwing a tantrum. They just want some reaction, some attention. If you delete, then you show that you are disturbed by it. That encourages them to attack some more. The problem is you have a day job and when you sacrifice personal time to work on the blog, you want to write something. You don't want to work hard to squeeze 1 hour out of your free time, time you could've spent enjoying some music for e.g., and then have to waste it deleting unwanted postings. The other party on the other hand has plenty of free time. Or rather, they just wait until they have some free time, then play some pranks and sit back and laugh. In my case, the software I used for the feedback column allows me to track the IP address of the poster. So I changed the software to display the IP address of whoever is posting. I am not sure if this was what worked but the person quickly dissapeared. Incidentally I actually traced the IP address back to a polytechnic in Singapore. So perhaps the person was terrified he would be expelled from the polytechnic if he/she is discovered to have used varsity resources to do undesirable things on the internet.

2. In the 2nd instance, someone who didn't like me started sending me very insulting emails, calling me names and so forth. But he/she hid behind an anonymous email provider. The source was the then at one time popular utility in some internet sites which provides for a function to 'email this article to a friend'. So the person clicked on that, enters my email address, and then just simply fired away. When I did a similar thing as you did now (i.e. I was disturbed by the insults enough to ask for opinions and help on my site's forum), it turns out the person was actually from that forum because the attack intensified. I.e. he/she clearly saw that I was disturbed and it became a joy for him/her to continue the attack. Eventually I discovered where the emails originated from (i.e. which website) and wrote to the webmaster of that website, a rather famous one. The attack dissapeared shortly after that. I think/would like to think that like me, other webmasters did not like the idea of someone abusing their website (or forum) for their own selfish means and hopefully they did something to stop the abuse.

My suggestion is to enable sign-on and then for each post, put on the poster's ip address or some way to identify him/her. At the very least, make it very clear you have a means of tracing the post back to him/her. Hopefully that might help stop this attack. It is sad when the internet degrades to this.

Hope this has helped.

Hang on. I would like to point out that it is not known who exactly the individual is. As we practise the principle of 'innocent unless proven guilty', let's not let suspicions get carried away. Please stay on topic.

I'd rather not have such an individual here. Remember this seller we had last time which gave us quite a lot of problems ? Then we had another forumer who tried to stir up racist sentiments here. I'd much rather we talk about good music, good sound, and things like that.

Actually I don't think either of us moderators has the ability to track ip addresses. I certainly can't even find out anyone's email address from here. I think only the admin has the feature.

Re: Attack on www.h1f1.blogspot.com

Post by WongKN on Sat Sep 25, 2010 6:29 pm

I believe once Lau shows that he has the ability to track ip address or email address, via the way of enforcing registration in order to post comments, then the attack will probably stop.

I also don't think it is Lau the individual is targetting but rather 'unker vic'. I believe he is victorwong who is also in this forum. It looks as if someone doesn't like him. Shouldn't have to come to this. Unfortunate.

It is sad when things like this happen. I hope they can get it settled soon because the feeling really sucks when such a thing happen to a website one has invested lots of personal time and sacrifice to run. Then along comes someone who forces us to ask the question "is all the sacrifice worth it ?".

Nevertheless, when I was young, I once accused someone of something and then found out I had wrongly accused the person. Ever since then, I have always been careful of adopting the principle "innocent unless proven guilty", because for any decent person, the feeling of having known that one has wrongly accused an innocent bystander is very sickening indeed. It makes one feel very small and so worthless as a person.

OK, enough about this topic, I just wish Lau and unker vic best of luck and that they can get this unpleasant episode behind them as soon as possible.

Hi WongKN

Like you said and from the forums and blog comments record, it seems there are someone who really hate Uncle Vic, and always try to oppose/criticise everything he said especially his high profile multi-subs application to his hifi system, in order to humiliate him in front of readers.
These rude and uncivilised acts must not be cultivated and encouraged in the audiophile community.

Hi Nil, thanks for the understanding of the situation. I reckoned displeasure had mounted over the issue that quite a large number of people have listened to the multi-subs configuration(some have gone against the advise of others not to go listen) and these people(new friends) were pretty excited about their listening experience, have subsequently told their other audiophile friends about it. I gathered some are still not able to face the fact/ reality that multisubs could be possible, tho it's almost next to impossible to setup, and even much more difficult to figure out how it's done!

I've also advice Lau to leave those comments (even with vulgarities in the contents)alone and let it accumulate...........as the attackers' friends would certainly know about it, and look at him very differently from then onwards.
One of the readers at the blog is a sort of forensic expert and had tracked down the IP address, it's a matter of time la when we get more info. And thru the grapevine I have also heard some people recently claimed responsibility when they boasted to their friends to show how proud what they had done. Again it's a matter of time some facts will be verified. Cool Cool

LOL .... i never even knew that blog existed until today.

Those people who post anonymously are chicken sh!t. Dunno what do they have to hide from anyway.

Thanks @htkaki, you are definitely familiar with my posting-style already.

And to that commenter "Chris Wong" who is nice enough to reference to me: "Hello to you too.": If you are reading this & if you actually had any grain of intelligence and are familiar with my postings ... you will notice that it is not my modus operandi to just comment that people have too much free time for this or that or relate to any gender topic, unless its part of a joke in some thread that has become nonsensical already. Otherwise, i aim mainly to shoot down mis-facts and perverted audio misconceptions with extreme prejudice and cold hard facts (which could very well be beyond your own elementary comprehension, but you can have the benefit of doubt) that so far NONE has been able to counter back. You are welcome to try... if you're not too chickensh!t that is. Go ahead, pick a fact-related topic and let the fun begin.

For those people here at h4s who have met me in person & engaged in conversation will know for sure whether things i post here in h4s are BS/talk-c0ck or not.

Otherwise as @WongKN said, just let the anon. & some not-so-anon. clowns at h1f1 sort it out.

To mr.Unkle Vic ... let me state CLEARLY that it's not me thats mutilating your thread at h1f1.blog .... You should know my style better than that already. Besides ... what they heck are they arguing over there anyway. If its not facts vs. mis-facts, its not fun (at least for me).

Opinions are pointless to be argued on as they are just "opinions".

It's mis-representation of facts & stupid statements that's fun to flame.... (u get what i mean).

Besides .. why would i want to put-down the "Member Numero-Uno & el Presidente" my fan-club anyways ....

hi Lau .... if you are keen to hear further... what makes a great blog great, & moderated in a great way is when the postings about an opinion are challenged intellectually. The blog owner should welcome such discussions and then delete/filter all other irrelevent posts such as what sex-life or whatever, or leave them in, if you think it adds some entertainment value for whatever excuse. WongKN would have the same experience a few years back as mentioned before. Same for topics that references certain facts, theories or some other stated empirical findings. This is how the threads can develop into something intellectual which sadly, alot of local people here are unable to carry forward and then only the thread degenerates into the more entertaining and off-topic posts.

Or otherwise, simply just lock out anonymous postings. People who post anonymously are basically just insecure in the first place and do NOT really have any positive contribution either technically or via empirical experience.

Same goes for some of the users here who disguise their info/age/gender... perhaps this emboldens them to just simply hurl accusations around without regard. But this is the double-edged sword nature of the Internet and free flow of info (and mis-info).

BTW, just for the record, i don't do blogs, nor post replies in blog websites. That's one area of the Internet i just never had a fancy for.
