Bonus is coming ?

It's almost end of 2010 and most employers would be releasing their bonus over the next 3 to 4 months. So, how do you guys plan to spend your hard earned bonus ?

give up hifi. take the misus out on a date like its the first day. make her happy. you know lah, do all that gentlemen stuff. a walk in the park, candle-light dinner, go paris.

then venture back into hifi. hehe. it never ends. its all a big hoola hoop.

i'm self emoloyed, thats y couldnt answer Wong's question.
No bonus, no year end break, no public holidays.... straight 6day week.
lucky got remedy to soothe the senses.

btw Jo, i just acquired a pair of AB1. now trying to biamp them with lowthers. hope it doesnt turn out crappy.

Self-employed ? Don't think I don't know the dirty tricks you guys uses, heheheheh. Buy a Soulution amp. Charge it under company expenses - office equipment. Amplifier for the meeting room presentation audio system . You get to deduct 20% for initial captial allowance, then 10% per year straight line for depreciation. If you borrow a loan to pay for it, you even deduct the interest as 'operating expenses'.

AB1 to partner with your Lowther? Bearing in mind that they are poles apart in impedance... dynamic swing indifferent between them is inevitable.

Sell me lah & solve your problem? Ha..

However, I would be interested to know how you mate AB1 with your Lowther. Have you ever thought of diy a horn-loaded bass to work with your Lowther? That would be a better utilization of the director fees I think.

nah. just joking. i'm not expecting any good results with the lowther/ab1 setup. i dont even have a baffle for the lowthers. just one of my crazy ideas to put them together to see how bad they sound. haha.

i've spent some time with mauhorns, fidelios n medalions. Verdict: mauhorns... enveloping and punchy.

ab1 not for sale yet. wanna experiment more to see what all the fuss is about with 'british high fidelity'. what a thirsty mind i have...

Jo, actually besides my computer science degree, I also hold a Higher Diploma in Accounting from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industries.

I take a slightly different approach. Save up the bonus and invest like hell... so can retire early and then enjoy hifi properly la

To an extent this is very true. But do bear in mind that deterioration of listening is a natural phenomenon of growing old. It is biological and not much can be done about it. So don't wait too long !

Well I am enjoying my diy hi fi journey at the moment; just couldn't have enough of it. When money is out of the worries one can enjoy hifi even much more.

Oh ya do take care of those precious ears like using ear plugs whenever necessary too to lessen the effects of old age.

Fren, if you really have a thirsty mind, dun waste the lowthers la... use them in open baffle with several 15" drivers. Google up ppl who has done it

You are right Wikin.

Simple full range 12" or 15" in open baffle w/o crossover.

You have to experience to believe.

my brother acquired some duplex drivers in Stonehenge cabinets and i all i could do was sit there and 'stare' at the sound.

then i started to realise what all the fuss was about with ElectroVoice and University... along with all those esoteric fridge-like Tannoys.

if i ever get a bonus this year, i'd splurge it on some mil-spec 6c33 power amp. tubes must come from some Russian MIGs. haha.

Splurge on room treatments la dei... add diffusers and bass traps 1st. If the missus (i'd assume you're married ?) asks then just say it's from some surplus deco factory shutdown sale

Oh you're just into this phase of life.. congrats...

As for OB panels, if you're crazy enough, here's an idea.

Go down to your local IKEA store and get 2 of those 2x4 feet cheap wooden dining table and flip it over its height. Cut the top 2 table legs, get a router and cut nice round holes so that your lowther can flush mount onto the panel.

i wish to do something on the power, get a reasonable power conditional and some main cables. and buy alot of CDs.

great idea! while i did the same with cheapo shoe racks as temporary measures for spkr stands, i never thought about flipping tables/benches.

i guess, for diy-ers, 'building it yourself' and the adrenaline rush while 'getting there' is already nirvana by itself.

Yeah, Material not so important coz there is no compression. Just go to plywood hardware shop, google OB in the net for OB size and ask someone to cut the hole for yr driver. Use at least 18mm thickness. MDF works as good.
Angle the baffle slightly and you are all set.
Remember, at least 12 inch driver. Full range better, no crossover.
My fren's 12 inch OB better bass than alot of bookshelf speaker.
The magic is the boxless sound ala maggies, mbl, nola, martin and etc speakers.
Once you go boxless, it is hard to go back to the monkey coffin speaker.

Just received news that the board of directors have pulled the plug on my bonus this year citing losses, mismanagement and other la-dee-dah which I know for a fact is bullcrap!!!

So to hell goes my musicroom and plans for a CD transport to do justice to that Levinson. My Hifi is about to get very very retarded this year. Ho hum and baloney. You guys can exclude me from any auditions because it will only hurt more. Once again goodbye guys. At least till I find a more financially rewarding job.

drife - Excellent idea! I fully agree. Having a diy page would definitely enhance hf4s. You and Wikin should start the ball rolling.

I forwarded a suggestion to the admin. Let's see how things goes. In the meantime, you guys can open and discuss your DIY topics in this this forum (not this thread, this forum). Open a new thread, 1 for every item might be a good start. E.g. 1 thread for items that can be used for room treatment for the normal people like you and me, who can't afford Real Traps ! And so forth. I think 'turbo-charging' of equipment, like changing the capacitors in an old speaker for a new lease of life would also be an interesting DIY topic. So, what are you waiting for ?

For me... wife and kids.. get them things....as over a period I too have splurged on my Hifi....sort of balance the scale or maintain the harmony of the family...its a win win situation in the long run.

Already spent mine over the week in Singapore!
All Rm3K of it !!!!!!!
Came home with only a small pair of speakers to show for it.

The good news is that I only had to pay a token sum of Rm20.00 as tax. Must have been a day that GOD smiled down on me.
