Recommendations On Female Vocals Music ie. Amanda Mcbroom

Post by ryder on Mon Apr 25, 2011 8:41 am

I recently bought this XRCD CD. Great tunes especially tracks no. 6, 8 and 10.

The quality of the recording is excellent and the great music is the icing on the cake.

Would appreciate recommendations on similar sort of music ie. soothing female vocals. Are other albums of Amanda Mcbroom worth exploring?

Thanks.

Thanks. Sade has been in my list for some time but didn't got around to getting her album. Will check Eva Cassidy and Allison Krauss. Tina Turner's style of rock doesn't quite suit my listening taste.

Cheers.

When you say Amanda McBroom, it seems to me you prefer silky voice but at a slowish tempo, mostly ballads and love songs etc right ? I am afraid many of the more famous female singers tends to sing with a bit of 'power', so the standard recommendations like Carole King, Jennifer Warnes, Linda Ronstadt, Brabara Streisand, etc are out, though I still HIGHLY RECOMMEND you check their best songs out (assuming you have not already done so).

I think Jennifer Warne's more recent hit album "The Hunter" might be suitable for you. Alison Krauss is more country than pop so you must be ready for that. Her rendition of "When you say nothing at all" is, to my taste anyway, a very good, probably superior, alternative to the pop-style rendition by Ronan Keating. Try Patty Smyth (note, Y instead of I) and her duet with Don Henley, "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough". Just some random thoughts.

Very Happy If you chinese, go buy the re-issues of some of the legends like Chou Hsian, Bai Kwang, etc. There are individual CDs and there are compilation CDs. Also Teresa Teng and Tsai Chin. They have soft, gentle renditions mostly. Remember, even Teresa Teng and Tsai Chin idolises the legends like Chou Hsian, Lee Hsiang Lan, etc. Tsai Chin calls Lee Hsian Lan one of the great woman singers in history.

Thanks. Yes, I am slowly getting into vocals with a soothing voice and slow tempo after listening to some Katie Melua and just recently Amanda Mcbroom. Will check out Jennifer Warnes. The Famous Blue Raincoat was recommended couple of times but didn't really check it out as I wasn't into these types of "boring" music previously.

Not really into Chinese music but will check some of them out.

You should also go for songs instead of singers as that would 'open up' your choices considerably, esp with regards to the best female singers. E.g.

1. "Once upon a dream" by Linda Eder from the Jekyll and Hyde soundtrack
2. Evita soundtrack, another suitacase in another hall, etc
3. It's Too Late by Carole King

and so forth. Many of these singers have very powerful voice, but they are also superb singers and are able to rendit slow ballads with extreme emotions.

Why is this Jennifer Warnes "The Hunter" LP so expensive? Is it a typo or something?

Supply and demand. If you understand cantonese, it's the target of being 'chau-ed'. A hint. Don't look for the original album which has a cover in black and white but look for the audiophile re-issue which has a colour cover. They are a lot more afforadable. AND, for XRCD, the audiophile reissue will probably sound better as they remastered it for audiophile uses. So now you know this album is extremely popular. If you have a TT, you might want to get the LP instead.

Okay I just checked. Jennifer Warnes and Carole King are both available on LP and CD.

I would appreciate if someone can advise whether the LP version is significantly superior to the CD version. Otherwise I'll just get the CD.

THanks.

WongKN, thanks for the advice. Looks like we've crossed messages. It appears that LP is the way to go for these yesteryear's music. Now, time to go hunt for some cheap original issues.

Cheers.

The answer is "IT DEPENDS". If you get a good copy of the LP, I have not heard any CD that can come close to the sound quality, especially in the ability to portray the 'emotions' of the singer. But if you are limiting yourself to later pressings, I think the best audiophile re-issues on CD may be competitive. If you have SACD ability, check to see if the SACD is available or not (I don't think so however).

For Carole King, suggest to get "Tapestry". Check out "You got a friend" and "Will you love me tomorrow". Carole King wrote those songs. For a more dynamic song, check out songs like "It's too late", "So Far Away", and "Home Again".

Carole King "Tapestry" has been widely accepted to be one of the finest albums ever created.

For Jennifer Warnes, Famous Blue Raincoat, check out "Famous Blue Raincoat" and "Song of Bernedette". However, only FBR is the slow ballad, Song of Bernedette is quite dynamic.

When you play these kind of singers, then you will understand what is meant by singer's ability to project emotions. MHO of course.

Enjoy !!

Now I just remembered I need to go get Eva Cassidy's "Songbird" .... Very Happy

Thanks WongKN for very informative post.

I've bought Jennifer Warnes "The Hunter" 24k gold cd. To compare it to normal cd, it has got more appealing sound :-) I have heard that her LP record is one of the most expensive found in the market at this moment.

On Carole King, is it worth to get this compilation? The album has 2 cds comprise of 33 songs!

BTW, if there are too many songs squeeze in to press an album, is the sound quality being compromised? Maybe sort of doing some compression to put all the songs in??

Stop craving about Audiophile singers all the time la. Do try this:

- Joanna Wang, second album... got these inside:

  1. "Tikiville (English)" – 3:52
  2. "Maybe Some Other Time (English)" – 3:50
  3. "Vincent" (Don McLean)– 5:28
  4. "一種念頭" – 4:37
  5. "我的愛" – 3:43
  6. "Times of Your Life" (Roger Nichols, Bill Lane) – 3:15

Dont worry about the English song, u can't tell she is Asian from it... better than Ema Fujita.

- Of couse Ema Fujita also very nice!!

- Trisha Yearwood. Country music + good vocal!

- Dixies Chicks. This one I got pirated one, in fact it is from my sis.. Sudah tak boleh play.. Now waiting for the purchase from oversea to come.. very very nice countries stuff man!

After you got bore of the Audiophile music, please remember to get to what I recommend here.~

I have CK's Tapestry on CBS Mastersound gold cd, a long time out of print edition which I think beats just about every other cd re-issue release by miles. Its hugely more revealing, fresh, vivid and rich sounding as if it was recorded yesterday. This isn't to say the ordinary releases are bad, but somehow the EU pressing is the worst sonic quality of the lot and like a 2nd generation tape transfer. Can't really go wrong with the US pressing in practice.

CBS Mastersound discs are highly sought after as seen on the used market. One of the inlay commentary of one other album describes the amount of care taken to reproduce the sonic quality to CD, which include cleaning of the tapes, careful re-alignment of the tape deck and etc. I think the end result is amazing anyhow.

I only have one of the earlier pressing of JW's FBR by Attic Canada. I've yet to compare with these new 21's century remasters. I didn't bother to compare as I'm not entirely a huge fan of JW's music. Anyone care to shed some light?

CD format cannot be compressed, the data is always in native mode. 33 songs on 2 CDs is OK as that is 17/18 songs per CD. However, it is usually accepted that the original albums are better than compilation albums, due to the fact that usually the compilations are usually re-mastered and often it means from degraded master tapes. If you want to check out Carole King's selection of songs to look for those you like, then the compilation is OK but once you have shortlisted your favourite songs, I would suggest you get the albums where the songs originally appeared in. Her two famous and highly recommended albums are Tapestry and Music.

BTW, if you have an AV system, recommended to get her concert "Carole King in concert". You will be amazed at the songs she wrote !

WongKN,
Don't bother with Songbird. Sound quality not as good as the live in blues alley album. Most of the songs there also rehashed from her other albums.

Post by WongKN on Mon Apr 25, 2011 2:49 pm

Bal, thanks.

Ryder, it occurred me just now that Crystal Gaye has a quite similar style to Amanda MacBroom. You might want to check out some of her albums. Also, you might also want to check out Carole Kidd, especially her album "All my tomorrows" (I think) by Linn Records (this one I would expect - hope - that Linn has it on hi-res already, surely ?). The 1st song on side-1 "When I dream" is quite popular amongst audiophiles and those who likes the Amanda MacBroom type of album/music. However, I must highlight that she is not one of the more well known singers and there is a reason for that in terms of her singing ability (personal opinions here, others may adore her ability and they are right as well). IMO, Linda Ronstadt tend to be quite dynamic in her singing style. It is exciting but not the Amanda MacBroom style.

If not mistaken, the Hi-Res download format from Linn is more expensive that the SACD that they are selling via their website.

Check out Janet Seidel. Most of her albums are in HDCD. just bought another one today. Her latest live album from her show in Taiwan.

For a nearer taste of Asian vocals, try Aiza Sequera from Philipines.

I recommend this girl called Rumer. Man, CD is 2011 but she brings back memories of the 70's (ok my memory does not stretch that far back but u get the drift...).

For Mandarin vocals, I like Nicole (Wang Ya Jie) & Lei Ting at the moment.

Eva Cassidy's latest rehash with guitar accompanying sounds very nice too.

And also 2 local artistes Bossa Princess (can't remember her name) & JRZ8 (did I get that right) low key jazz. Superb. I think they did a concert in KL last month.

Regards,
Joe Ling

When the boys have grown to be men... listen to a Real woman...

Marianne Faithfull, Broken English. Not near children.

But not like Amanda at all.

Good afternoon.

I love Amanda McBroom's Dreaming.

Have been listening to this album for many years and still enjoying it.

I also enjoy Amanda McBroom's A waiting heart, generally slower than Dreaming but still good.

Besides that I also enjoy the following female voice/albums :-

- The well by Jennifer Warnes

- Stones in the road by Mary Chapin Carpenter

- What the world needs now is love - Wynnona Judd

- Fast cars by Tracy Chapman but the cd I have sounds 'stiff'

- Tsai Chin aka Cai Qin

The following are on offer in Speedy RM50 for 2 albums :-

- Songs from movies and musicals (2cd) by Laura Fygi.

- Best of Crystal Gayle (2cd).

- Anne Murray duets.

- You were ... Ballad by Ayumi Hamasaki.

Enjoy the music

I saw the new copies (re-issues) of Amanda Mcbroom (not XRCD or severely digitally enhanced edition) at recent KLAV 2011 show. Of course it was terribly expensive. Buddy told me its not the same as early release. I really don't know because I've never owned any but would luv to have the LP one day, perhaps someone can shed light.

I would recommend Thea Gilmore and Beth Nielsen Chapman. Chapman's Sand and Water to me is an absolute gem. Can't find them on LPs tho.

Roberta Flack's Killing Me Softly is also available now reissued. Very quiet pressing. Best I've heard.

Finally acquired an early USA Gecko pressing of Amanda Mcbroom Dreaming CD. Very, very good SQ! I think I'll live with this and forget the Lp which happens to ask for silly money.
