The ultimate hi fi friendly sofa

Post by tmahmood on Tue Oct 04, 2011 8:34 pm

Hi all,
Am currently looking for a nice comfy sofa for use in serious listening sessions(is there any other?). Like the ones in CMY I Utama. Steve wasn't sure where they got it from. Am talking about a sofa where the sitting position is such that the ear level sits nicely with the average floorstanders. Any idea where to get those?
Cheers

Speaking about sofa, (actually in the market to replace my old one) I had thought of the 2-3 seater IKEA Ektorp range within affordability and 10 year warranty, but then again it boils down to personal taste in its design and upholstery types. Of course this isn't an ultimate, just another logical choice.

Thanks cmboy. I should probably have mentioned that I am actually looking for a single seater as my listening room is pretty small. I've come across a few a xcqt, the joint above CMY but smart and comfortable they doubtless are, am not willing to pay the equivalent of a naim unitiqute to acquire it. Very Happy

The Ikea Poang model single seat comfy chair is awesome value for money, there's a matching footrest too... About RM400.00 all up.

for reference, it's the one they have in the display cabinet with the hydraulic machine simulating a bum hitting it several thousand times a day...

I am using 1. It's comfortable but I find that I need to remove the head rest. To my ears the head rest affects the sound. YMMV.

I think the Ikea Ektorp single seater is a very good and logical choice. Its thick, higher build class, traditional fabric upholstered and easily blend in with other room decor. Poang is just a CKD budget and practical purpose chair...thats why its been in my bedroom for watching TV. Poang is one chair not designed for sitting straight upright.

Poang's a legend! It survived so many college parties and outdoor rock festivals man... it's my musical chair of choice!

What is an average floorstander? Smile I have seen floorstanders from 1m to 2m tall.

Only one way to find out - measure it yourself. Find out how tall your sofa needs to be to match YOUR floorstander.

I am waiting to find a reclining sofa that I can doze off better heheheh... But actually waiting to get a massage chair...one of those small OSIM or Ogawa.

I don't know about others, but I don't like swivel chairs or these kind for hifi listening. Yes, I may sit but not for long. Gimme something like the Ektorp, (of course there's others and not necessarily IKEA) I'll sit and relax there longer (of course not neccessarily listening to hifi) read a book, do some deep thinking... etc!

The most sensible reply; and if I can add by measure the mid-point height between the tweeter & woofer of your floor stander to determine your optimum ear level, cum your actual height of your preferred sitting posture could narrow down your choice of seat. What Ektop, Treetop name becomes secondary. Avoid lousy local copy using wrong poundage foam for your butt and back rest; they are meant for different weight support. Worse, on long listening, wrong foam gives you "half boiled eggs" lol! .

Jo, agree with u that the material and non fatigue nature of the chair is important. I liked one of those 'lazy boy' type leather outfit cos v nice n comfy for, in the words of cmboy 'not just for hi fi' but for reading etc. Problem is once the foot rest comes up, the ear level faces the ceiling, and we all know there is only one thing to do when that happens.
Elhefe, in the end, I have decided to tighten the belt and save for the low single sofa at XZQT in OU. It'll take up to 2 months to be delivered anyway.
Thanks again for all the suggestions guys. Much appreciated. And now for the thick curtains........
