haha, no such thing as run in for those that have been in the closet for 20 years. It is more like making sure it still works.

Many things have changed/degraded after such a long storage. oxidation, hardening of rubber and suspension, chemical reaction of the voice coil..

It should sound different.., and most likely wont sound the same or of it best.

Dont mind telling what speaker is it?

Ya, it doesnt look like it has a rubber material on the surround. Neither there would be cooling fluid for the voice coil.

In that case, I dont think it will take long to "stabilize"..

Base on the type of driver you mentioned, it seems that you like classic equipment~

truly impossible..speakers has moving coil,it cant be without failure >20 years especially the high frequencies driver...left working non stop.. i think only one instrument may be possible==>our hearing..it last as long as we live, amazing device created by our GOD;)

if there's nothing wrong with the speakers i.e. the surround is ok (no cracks or holes) and the wiring is still soldered properly and the crossover is still working (perhaps u can get an electrical expert to check the circuit; the worry is that some components could have dried out), then you can try to play some music (with a cheap amp just in case something blows)....softly (turn volume down).

let it warm up for a while before u turn the volume higher. breaking in period should be like for a pair of new speakers.
