DAC adventures

Post by joeling on Tue Nov 15, 2011 4:30 pm

Hi fellow members,

Kind of restless lately. Did a comparison of 3 Dacs :

1) Reimyo DAP999 + Empirical Audio Off Ramp 5 (solid state)
2) AMR DP777 (tube)
3) Audio Research Dac 8 (solid state)

This was a non technical, extremely biased and ad hoc comparison.

Source was a Mach2Music Mac Mini utilising USB out + Amarra or Amarra Mini.

Software used were mostly vocal heavy tracks & in Mandarin.

1) Reimyo - lively, articulate, non fatigue + other superlatives. No hi rez
2) AMR DP777 - muted, soft, polite. Does hi rez
3) ARC DAC8 - most aggressive of the bunch but in a naughty but nice manner. Does hi rez

Keeping the Reimyo for red book & DAC8 for hi rez. AMR will be banished to downstairs system.

Regards,
Joe Ling

PS : I wonder how will the Debussy fare ....

joe,

Have you tried the weiss int202 with the arc dac8? When you say ARC DAC8 is the most aggressive of the lot, how aggressive is aggressive? As fast and forward as a NAIM DAC?

Could you PM me the price you paid for the ARC DAC8 and where did you get her from?

regards
