Re: Turntable lovers - Please Gather Here!
Buying a Rega P1,2,3 to mod is like buying a Satria 1.3, then modding the crap out of it to make it a monster on the streets. Yes u can drop in a Lancer GSR 4G93T motor and boost it to high heaven and what nots and it will be a real terror on the road. But alas, its still "only" a Satria...
Put it side by side with a real Evo III (same generation platform chassis and stuff...) and the differences would be ultra glaring already.

Oh, but some would beg to differ (not me, i'm tending towards your camp of thought) ... lets see, different types of feet, different kinds of mat, exotic clamps, re-wiring the RB-whatever tonearms, bearing tweaks, belt tweaks, platter jobs or replacements, etc etc ... it goes on and on and on and on .....
But after counting all these tweaking $$$, might just have been better off getting a VYGER Timor instead?

Hi .....
How much would one of these Vyger Timor Analog TT cost against a Rega TT. ( comparing an entry level model and the upgrade possibilities of these two models )
Which Audio shop carries these products ?
cheers

Bass....
Thanks... will look up the TT at Centre Circle.
Base on the description ( conversation with Mike ) the Rega counterweight could be similar to the Groove Tracer counterweight.
Or could be something totaly different.....

Mugen,
My LP12 now fully resurrected and proudly carrying a newly acquired shiny Ittok. I'm back in analogue heaven and a bit more at last. Just sharing. Cheers.

Nice to hear about anyone finding and fully satisfied on their purchase. Someone elses loss is someone's gain. I'm looking towards the Ekos.
I'm also not surprised you find it worth to keep the LP12 rather then the Systemdek. Surely you may know best. I think I read that its also one re-badged Audio Note model.

Me too Ekos one day, but I'll stay in the 80s for the time being, kinda nostalgic-student days in England couldn't afford king Ittok then.
Yeah you're rite Audio Note bought over LS&B all Systemdek stuff circa late 90s I think. Became AN TT2 methinks, only diff is acrylic platter in place of glass and the former is available separately from AN or OL. Thought of getting one a few years back but didn't eventually. Cheers.

cmboy,
How could you know you're only 30 hehe. Yeah you're damn right. I was lucky to have gotten 2 scholarships at one time, so I was better off than most. But I know of friends who sacrificed accommodation and meals for the sake of hi fi and SLR cameras then.

I did this.. Moved out of a nice Uni apartment room to a cold rented room just to be able to afford Mission 733s, an Arcam Alpha 6 integrated and Marantz CD63SE CDP. And when my Mom came to visit me prior to graduation she got a big shock!

Congrats,
We all made it in our education and we must have loved England days too. Music hobby kept us going and we did well in Uni. There were people who got lost there, spend their money on other things instead - gambling, drinking and some drugs and women too and never finished their studies.
And music kept our lives going well to this day. Cheers

Uk isn't like Malaysia where you can walk out, drive out, paint the town red or have a TT (teh tarik) with buddies just about anytime you feel like it..UK ain't like Malaysia.. Its the hifi system that can entertain you nicely when you most need it. Of course there's numerous reasons why a student would love to own or acquire a hifi system there. I suppose its mini micro thingys now.

I've put together a cadd drawing of a sand filled tray equipment support for my Linn Lp12 and getting a quote from a furniture maker. Will try and post drawings soon. If anyone interested can order a few numbers so cheaper. Cheers

May you tell why or the benefits of sand filled for a LP12? I always thought one excellent solution was somewhat of a metal stand in the likes of a Mana acoustics stand, or something of that sort.
The already excellent design of the independent suspension like LP12, Ariston or Thorens are with intent and purpose to negate or minimize external vibration or resonance. Mine is placed on a custom metal stand, a simple test is a knock (not an excessive one) at any of the stand framework and it wouldn't make any audible disturbance or effect whilst playing an LP. You can't do this with a Rega. I believe a Rega would benefit from a Sand filled tray. Whatever it is, you may know better.

At one point of time, I was thinking of it for my Rega but scrapped the idea altogether and spent the money on a nice acrylic platter instead.
I wanted to DIY as I own a Makita angle circular saw and hit a dead end thinking about using non tropical wood. It never got off the ground. That was that.

Yes, having a suspended sub-chassis, the LP 12 may not benefit as much from a sand filled tray as it would from a steel framed stand..more suited towards TTs like Rega..
Anyhow, might it end up to be something like this?with spikes and all? http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/sandblaster_e.html (Note that its a Rega that sits on it heh heh)
Nevertheless, Wan, I'm keen .....

Hi guys.....
Accidentally damaged
.
. my cartridge while dismounting the record.
Needle cabut from cartridge.
What a way to end the day !!!!!
What would be the next best "cartridge" from a Rega Bias Cart and cost much less and where to get the recommended cart. ( OEM ortofons )
Approx cost for a new Bias would be in the range > RM200 and ELys > RM400.
Ahhhhhhhhh..........
thank you and cheers

Sorry to hear of your accident ...
but if things don't go, how can better things come... right ?
Try Grado Prestige Green or Silver. Waaaay waaaay better than a Rega Bias anytime/anyday and won't break the bank.
Or if u don't mind s/hand, Clearaudio Aurum classics. About the price of a brand new Elys but definitely in a different class than the Elys.

Shure's are really good too.. but who's the dealer for Shure lately ?
An old 1980's M75ED can still "walap" a modern Rega Bias nicely.

I have a Grado blue, very low hours and kept it aside cos didn't like its sonics. Prefer a quality Shure anytime (although with some shortcomings in its tracking ability) and with more life to the music.

Re: Turntable lovers - Please Gather Here!
Pair well? I ain't exactly sure nor have hard data to back it up. My ears make the conclusion. As for hum, I didn't recall any hum with the Grado, nor any others. HOWEVER, a pickup may pick up some audible hum when the arm is nearer to the center of the platter as its so near to the motor area. Many Rega TT have 110V AC motors although there's been change to this since and complaints may be random.
I'm thinking that Grado hum issue has been talked about on the internet and led many (who read this) to believe its nearly entirely true and probably created some phobia or fear.
Allow me to suggest looking somewhere else if a product have shortcomings that you fear much.

Easily, especially for new 3 point mounting RB301 where Rega provide an optional adjustable VTA adjuster shim at a price. For older model arm, you've to find the washer somewhere else, improvise somehow or 3rd party made adjusters. I have those permanent ones in various thickness.
(VTA...there we go again

Re: Turntable lovers - Please Gather Here!
I reckon Rega's approach to the short height of own brand cartridges are to keep things simple and not complicate owners with extra thingys to add on. I can't think of another competing cartridge make that have the same height profile. But the production of that 3 point type adjuster really surprised me. OK ok.. not wanting to delve into their marketing approach or how they please their customers.

Re: Turntable lovers - Please Gather Here!
Rega TT can get away without shim and fit another cartridge make such as Ortofon. However, there's a compensated adjustment made to the arm lift so there's sufficient clearance at full arm lift. There's been cases where without the VTA shim and fitting another cartridge type, the arm may be too low or even touching the record suface, therefore solve the problem either by adding a shim or compensate by adjustment to the arm lift mechanism.

Re: Turntable lovers - Please Gather Here!
OM series body have the ability to fit stylus of higher grade and therefore the performance may be improved. OM5, OM10, OM20, OM30. The price also goes up. The first 2 models are at budget entry level. I have OM10..so so lah.. I've no opportunity to try OM20 and 30, so can't comment.

Mugen....
Try needledoc or amazon... . The prices are still within the bracket or lower compared to whats been sold in MY.
Comparing against the entry level models, AT, Grado, Rega.
Even the lowest cart "GT" the price is above the 50% barier
Even choices of carts in the entry to mid segment are limited as well. Don't you agree
cheers

Re: Turntable lovers - Please Gather Here!
There's always the internet stores, Ebay and local shops to shop for prices for bits and pieces of TT stuff.
I just received my replacement original Linn rubber belt direct from Linn UK, I thought I found the best price and most convenient purchase method, moreover right to my doorstep. No need drive out, pay parking charges and wasting my time looking high and low.
The LP12 need the original type belt for best performance, not any old 10" belt that seems to work.
