If I recall looking at some vintage Rega specimens, there wasn't much difference in the Planar2 or Planar3 architecture, maybe the former lacked in some sonic areas. With the current P1, P2, P3 and above, you draw a thick line in between the models for they differ much in their build quality, architecture and sonic performance. You get what you pay for in the models offered. You pay Rm500, you get RM500 performance, you pay RM1500, it gets significantly better.
Roughly I really can't think of the P2 beating the lights out of the P3 even in stock form. I could reckon Rega would have thought this out at design. Thats why anyone wanting to buy a Rega and delve into the TT world must think VERY CAREFULLY and like you say, the novelty can wear off sooner or later.
P.S. PM me your offer price for the cart, we deal offline.

The Ortofon OM carts is on the way and the best thing is the interchangable "stylus" head within the series. Gives me an option to change to a better stylus.

Now is to wait to hear the sonic difference from the deceased Bias 2 .

So two weeks medical for my TT..... .

Which model? 10, 20, 30?
Last I looked, model 20 & 30 stylus was a bit too pricy for my blood, considering its only the stylus but same cartridge body machine.
I would have prefered a Denon MC (high output type DL160?), in the region of RM500+ shipped to doorstep from Ebay seller.

P.S. Please do not take my recommendations or opinions as endorsement to mention of product or make or apply across the board. My opinions are based on personal experience and I stand corrected anytime.

CM.....

No Worries .. your views are informative and is appreciated. Everyone have their views / opinions and its good to consume it with a "pinch of salt".

For now would be going for a 5 E series with an option to upgrade the stylus at a later date.

5e.. th entry level one. I haven't look at this up close but I think its the same cartridge body as all the other OM series. Its the stylus that makes the different grade.
BTW, I used to have one a busted OM10 cartridge body, (one side open circuit), so I dissected it to have a look inside to see what makes it tick. Its extra fine, thinner than human hair copper wire windings, I ain't no copper coil or electro mechanical R & D researcher so no further comment as all cartridges have their own magic in the design.

Yeap... the interchangable stylus capability.....but not the OM5B.
If I am not mistaken the OM5B is a standard fitting for all RP1.

After putting in the hours will change to a different grade stylus either the OM20 or OM30 to compare the difference.

CM...

How was the OM10's output... before it kaput ?( in your opinion )

Re: Turntable lovers - Please Gather Here!

Post by cmboy on Sat Mar 13, 2010 8:11 pm

IIRC, common average amongst many other makes of cartridges. Its compatible to most market phono stage or integrated amplifier. Some Shure carts, especially M55E, M44 are high output and you're able to feel like there's more gain and stronger dynamics in those. Most cartridges have their own unique or proprietry coil design and can differ in varying degrees in coil inductance and DC resistance which may have some bearing or compromise on common phono stage cartridge load. (thats why more expensive phono stages have configurable input load). Nevertheless a cartridge brand ain't selling a budget cartridge to complicate their customers with unique requirements for potential performance. So OM series is plug and play, no fussy requirements or loading.
If you're adventurous, you can custom mod (or own experimenting with different component values) your phono stage input to match the cartridge specs. There's been cases where DIY's claim they found better performance with entirely different values or mods other than following manufacturer suggestion. Thats their claim...
Long ago, I had thought all cartridges are simply just plug n play, and all cartridges are made equal, more or less. I found out later on through my own experimentation that altering the cartridge loading does make some sense towards better listening pleasure. Just like replacing Rega feet, stumbled on this that improved things...so I felt. But thats all subjective. Things we're speak about frequently like VTA, alignment, mods, acrylic platters, were not part of TT adventures long ago. Things were much simpler back then and even taken for granted.

Ok...google on cartridge loading to learn more. I can't possibly explain much in a couple of paragraphs.

Actually I told half truth, I have 2 pcs of OM10, one still good, the other was a spoilt one. The spoilt one was eventually dissected. Maybe one day can compare against your 5e. OTH, I'm guessing there's a marginal difference between the two. Its the model 20 onwards thats supposed to start lifting skirts. (considering the price). I'm also with the impression that OM series are so so, general use..that sort of play. Its the premium range of Ortofon MC's that can be serious thingys. Then again, so many others in the competition. Susah lah!

There's numerous online stores (including many non-hifi related) who don't ship to this region or Malaysia for reasons best known to them. This is entirely at their discretion and not our place to fault them for their terms and conditions.
As with online purchasing, you buy from those who're basically honest, reliable and reputed to ship things to Malaysia promptly and succesfully. Do your own research on buying things from online.
Thank your lucky stars you don't live in an embargoed country like Afghanistan.

Subject: Rega white belt.
As every Rega would know, there's the Rega belt, just another black belt that looks like a O ring. Nothing much to do, taken for granted except change it every 5 years as suggested by Rega.
Now there exist a limited edition of 500pcs of "white" belt. US$75 a pop. I'm staring at some RM280 for a BELT you know! NOT cheap for a Rega belt..perhaps among the most expensive belts ever made for a TT. Some owners who're able to splash out for this, claim they're bowled over the lift in sonic performance. Hard to swallow eh? even for me that a belt can make a difference, of course if comparing a very old belt and something new. Would I think its beneficial to my Rega? perhaps for me I could think the cost of it would be of utmost concern. Afterall my P3 is already halfway with extra mods and could continue further with this white belt. OTH, I'd rather save up and opt for the premium 3rd party subplatter instead.

Depends on how revealing is the overall TT design.

Since Regas do not feature a decoupled motor placement, belt tension cannot be changed without factory un-sanctioned methods.

But for those where the motor stands alone like Clearaudios, some Pro-Jects, some Roksans... etc etc ... Belt tension is one of the parameters to fine-tune the sound.

But comparing a belt's price/performance ratio to some fancy platter price/performance ratio doesn't really make sense. Might as well add in a comparison for those "exotic" record clamps as well then.

Even position of motor can make a difference, as I've heard of a few cases of modded LP12 having the motor diagonally across the tonearm. Record clamps...errrr... it can always be for better or worse. Worst case is it deadens the overall musicality despite improving some other areas. Personally I'll never use a clamp on an LP12. Rega? yes, only the Michell make.

The problem with using weighted pucks on suspended chassis like LP12s, Thorens and Oracles is that it is akin to changing the pre-loading of the spring. With the added mass, the whole sub-chassis is not floating about the intended range of the spring's restoring forces anymore.

The Rega on the other hand, can sure use more overall mass loading in whatever form and size as it's a generally very lean & lightly built record player to start with. They're the king of "Guerrilla Warfare" of TT mfgs.

Rega can use more mass, but not too much albeit more mechanical bearing stress too. I've tried different ones, heaviest at 600gram from a well known brand and the sonics was a disaster. Somewhere at around half that can be beneficial but thats entirely up to owner to determine the amount of satisfaction. I have a DIY prototype one that weighed in at around 280gram, reckoned bare minimum for purpose and intent.

The Interspace has a much, much quieter motor, to start with ... cosmetically, more pleasant to the eye. Sound-wise, the Timor is rougher around the edges but perhaps more upfront. I did put a benz ace on the Interspace for a while and the results were quite seductive ... Smile

larren...

Thanks for the update.

Guess they are testing the waters but base on Asiasound personal's input it should improve the TT's performance to a different level. As i have heared the difference.

Not sure how would the quality of these upgrade options be against the much more popular / established after markets producers.

My views , I trust that they would have thought this out thoroughly before embarking on locally manufactured ( they emphasize ) upgrade options. As any negatives would be an impact to the overall image .

For now I would hold on to my P2 and add on these upgrades gradually. The plus point is these upgrades can be carried into a P3. ( if i go that direction )

Quote from Mugen : A Souped up Satria.

Competitive pricing compared to the establishd after market upgrade items.

cheers

Wingman, I firmly believe P3 (rather than P2 as a base) can benefit more from 3rd party upgrades. There's clear lines between current P series models, unlike Planar 2 & 3.
But then you may know better.

You might as well get it...not many worthwhile Rega come by everyday (unless you've some other make in mind)...then sell the P2 later on lah, or keep it as another alternative for different cartridge, music, etc.. Its sometimes in pursuit of excellence and considering the opportunity at hand, a radical solution may be to benefit despite a temporary setback in finance.

Do think about other makes too... the TT world isn't always centered around the Rega you know...
But this is the thing about Rega... the potential, exposure and amount of available mods for more fun and adventure, without really breaking the bank.
I'm truly amazed that Asia Sound now offer upgrade items to customize your Rega, considering its not sanctioned by Rega themselves. I had always thought they would be like anyone else...market and sell, the rest is your problem.

Cm....

On the Dot...... Rega ...available local mods at a reasonable price range.

Roy Gandy's approach is pratical..... make music affordable for every corner of the community and still cater for the upper crust of the Hifi community.Sadly, the middleware makes it impossible to own a decent Hifi gear.

Looking at it, Asia Sound is sticking to "Roy's" vision and you see many who have gone out and bought a Rega TT -P1 / P2 and gone on to upgrade to a better model. Ahem Ahem... . Even a handfull of detractors have purchased a Rega TT....

Why loose potential revenue if its there for the picking . The distributor and manufacturer benefits in the long run.

Whether its sanctioned or not we may never know... on the finer details of the agreement.

It's similar to what Proton has done, sell car -- capture market --- sell accessories --- have different variants to suite each taste bud and budget of consumers.

my 2 cents of a view.....

cheers

Well.. I suppose Rega UK don't bother much what we do to our Rega TT's in this part of the world. I also suppose that its up to their regional this side of the world to handle any service or customer issues entirely.
Unlike Linn, they did document in their manuals that if there were any mods that would have improved the sound of their TT, they would have done or implemented it, which is why the LP12 have undergone numerous periodical changes or upgrades in different areas they found lacking.

What Makes?
Rega P1, Dual 1225 Auto idler Drive and Hugh limited edition Thoren TD226 .

Favourite?
I like three of them, each of this TT produce unique individual characteristic music. the old Dual TT is most usage among these 3, bcos I mainly play Jazz and vocal music. plus it's easy and friendly.

Wow.... never knew car manufacturers were manufacturing TT's, Maybe lean times calls for drastic measures to get the moolah into their account books......

or just maybe its parts of the accessories of a car, there were cassette players, CD players and now a record player for the car......ha ha ha..

on the flip side ....just imagine the TT's belt snap after a 30 hours of usage... carrying over the similar charateristics of the Proton Speedometer symptom.... .

cheers

Was justing around lah.. no intent of any malice.

I think it was extremely rare for a TT belt to snap but it does loosen and slip over a period of time. Many TT do best with original belt where still available as spares. I'm quite wary of alternative (or cheaper) rubber belt types as it can affect the performance to some degree. Rega belt in Malaysia is quite an expensive item, RM80 something more or less?.

CM.....

No worries lah.........no humor no fun....more humor more fun.....gets everyone light headed ...

But just imagine a miniature version of record player (7") in a car ....possibilities...

Do agree Rega parts are competitively priced but not the carts. Can get them cheaper from the WEB.

NOOOOOO!...there ARE forumers here who don't know how to draw lines between jesting, fiction and facts, moreover get irked for no logical reason and become hostile instead. These are NOT nice people I assure you.

I always look to the web for good deals and buy at the right time (especially not during seasonal periods like Xmas) where goods may take longer to arrive and safely. I'll only buy here if I've no real choice and need it right now, but thats seldom. So much to find on the web, at least reassuring your nerves its available there.

Someone told me B4, there is a audio shop ard paramount PJ do sell Shure Catridge, but I cant recall the actual location. maybe someone here can share. Catridge price ard RM250-350 is probably good enough for the REGA II. if u willing to pay RM120 - RM160 for a new LP then RM300 Cartridge is not really expensive.

I think there's no more AUDIO shops at Paramount, they're history other than one old timer shop selling used LP's. They used to have carts and needles but all sudah orang sapu long ago, unless the proprieter digs up from some find or discard.
Lots of my Lp were RM5-10 each..I'd nearly always dismiss LP's costing 3 figures...just me.
Old Shure models may be excellent choices but finding extra stylus may pose a problem, unless you'd like to play these thingys for one season. Avoid them if can and look elsewhere.
