Sorry, but not keen on publicizing my rig. I'm just happy with a fairly decent budget rig for personal enjoyment. Of course its a TT + arm + carty. It can't be any less can it?.

CD vs Vinyl

If the recording industry turn around and start to produce all the recordings in LPs then, I would say, it is the one single best thing ever happened for music lovers.
See my notes on Vinyl, hope it helps.

Actually in all fairness, sometimes the mastering on CD is really screwed up by the publishers. Not so much the fault of the medium itself.

Like for Red Hot Chili Peppers, the CD albums (esp the latest one Stadium Arcadium) are just downright horrible as the mastering engineer's flaws itself are just obviously glaring in its own right. Over-use of dynamic compression, saturation/clipping in the audio band, etc etc.

There are also instances where the CD is actually superior to the LPs.
This will really vary on a case-by-cases basis depending on the genre
of music u like to listen to.

The Tsai Ching "Old Songs" album actually is better on CD than LP.
Similarly for the Jennifer Warnes "The Hunter" on certain CD versions are better against the LP reissue.

One good reason (just IMO) to go for LPs is if u happen to have a decent collection of titles (say an uncle or other relative decided to go generous and ahnd over his entire vinyl collection) and got a good hi-fi system as well. So why not maximise it and add a TT. The vinyl medium is actually a damn good medium for high-fidelity and as long as LPs are not seriously scratched or groove-damaged by lousily setup TTs, its an added medium of audio enjoyment.

But someone is just starting out from today's MP3 and iTunes/iPod generation, vinyl is actually a high entry cost esp since new LP titles costs much more than CDs or buying legitimately from the iTunes store.

For those who just swap songs amongst friend or BitTorrent from thepiratebay.org , no comment. pirat

Re: Turntable or CD

Post by cmboy on Sun Aug 30, 2009 3:12 pm

The most significant audible difference btw CD and LP (especially older albums and remasters) is mostly that Lp's are mastered from fresh master tape production, so you may likely listen to a more forward and vivid and live presentation. The CD equavalent may be compressed, laid back, duller and colorless, moreover digital sounding. Analog tapes wear down or deteriorate from decades of storage or use. It also depends from which batch of original masters. I suppose Malaysia got 2nd generation or less quality master tape for local pressing, which goes to me hearing distinct sonic quality difference. The sound of new CD remasters are likely doctored, re-equalized, compressed, or anything the engineer deems applicable to enhance the sonic quality for mass CD production. If the master tape is digital, less deterioration I reckon but nevertheless, the CD is still sonically different in varying degrees from the LP. Your vinyl rig itself may further color or flavor the music.
BTW, there' have been instances where the master tape is lost and the CD re-issue was likely transferred from a prestine LP. I do have one John Barry soundtrack album that never appeared on CD but professionally transferred from LP. It was in limited quantity done in Germany, and NOT a CDR. I have the same LP too and the LP won hands down, playing on my lowly Rega.

Their used records are really "USED!", have to sift through very carefully. Thats the trouble now... most gems and really good used stuff are GONE!..long ago. Anyone picking up this hobby now and searching for LP's all locally have to pay a high price and whatever leftovers. Sad and unfortunate phenomenon. The more people delve into this, less share for everyone.
Yes, for starters, high price to pay for a new TT, phono, LP's.. like paying for another music source and starting another collection all over again. Market forces are dictating high prices. Years ago, people were throwing away Rega and Linn or others for peanuts. Now the same but new TT's cost a bomb, even used ones. Sad but true.

Since you have so many LPs, are you selling some of them?

Is it a consequence of having many Lp's that I should sell some of them? Anyway, the answer is no.
Funny thing is, I've never asked before to anyone I know who's got huge collection to part with any, unless he sayz so. Sorry if you had hopes.

An enthusiast who is still having LP fever will hardly part ways with his/her collection.
Unless he/she has decided to give up this hobby. Very Happy

Nowadays there are a few HiFi shops selling LPs too.
Oh ya.. there is a forummer called helter skelter (if not mistaken) and he has lots of LPs for sale.

theres lots of LPs for sale at the weekly amcorp mall flee market but for oldies like me they are way overpriced. for classic rock albums we used to pay rm12 new in the70's of course la so it's a bit irritating that these young sellers (helter skelter incl) are selling procol harum albums for RM45 and above.

and the quality is suspect. theres always a lot of hiss although on visual inspection the records looked wonderfully shiny.

but once in a while u do get a gem and then u'll go back for more. i got a john renbourne discontinued lp for rm10. rare.nice...

so... RM12 lets say back in 1975 , factor in assumed inflation at 6% per annum, would be equal to 1.06^24 = 4.05 times.

so RM12 back in 1975 dollars would be equivalent to RM48 in 2009 dollars.
