Matching amp for Usher BE-718 speakers

Post by ongaaron on Sat Sep 05, 2009 8:10 am

Hello guys,
Need a matching amp for abovementioned speakers. Understand it prefers high power solid state rather than tube amp. Can a high power tube amp do the job? Currently driving it with Exposure Classic 23/28 combo. (70W)

I had heard Usher speakers(a lower range model) being driven by the Perraux 150i(SGD6k+) and 250i(SGD9k+) high power integrated amps and the performance is breathtaking.

I had tried to pair it with Tube Amp (EL34 - 30W) with Usher BE-718. IMHO, the tube amp does not have enough power to drive the 718 to its peak. I am not sure about other tube such as 6550 or KT88 which has better power.

I also read from some article saying it needs a high-powered solid-state amp to drive it to its peak performance.

Now, I am using NAIM per/power to drive it. Big difference from my previous tube and I like the sound much better now. However, have not tried any other amp brand.

Usher BE718 needs lots of power regardless SS or tubes. I'm using one driven by my previous VTL MB250 with 250wpc with excellent sound and now with McCormack DNA225 and SS would suits better than tubes...you'll notice in bass region, IMHO

hi ongaaron..
My advise to u dont near the BE718 if u dont want end up need to sell
ur exposure combo..i dont think ur current set up will deliver good
sound from 718..

usher can consider same type with ATC speaker its really need a lot of
power to drive the speaker to the limit..i really kena..purchase the
speaker and end up need to change my amplifier..RM RM RM

If u really love the speaker ready the budget for upgrading the amp..amp 150watts and above is recomended..

good luck

As long you've got the right power for usher it should be okay, but the sound of the combination is again to be considered. In my personal experience and reading in some forums 200wpc is the minimum for BE718. Cheers!
