mad.onenad wrote:hi llsaw,
i rather liked what u listen to mostly, esp the new bands that r unknown to me and given ur taste i make it a point to investigate further. but in ur last 2 posts u implied that Yes and Dire Straits r american pop rock. which they aren't surely kan? and pink floyd's 1st 2 albums r really their greatest i think. after syd barrett went 'shutter island' they lost their innocence and they got technically more adept and their production got cleaned up til they gleamed. the endearing quirks of say 'see emily play' replaced by hi-fi i guess.
so give 'a saucerful of secrets' and ' the pipers at the gates of dawn' a few more spins and marvel at what was achieved by a hungry band given a free run of a barebone studio. no sophisticated equipmt, just wires and tape machines and feedback and LSD. heh.
and if possible listen thru headphones in a darkened room with an altered consciousness. at full vol of course.
Hi Mad.onenad,
Do u own a NAD gear? I used to own the NAD 310 integrated once. Cracking piece of gear!
Yup, both bands are British but the music is starting to sound very much like 80s American radio friendly formulaic pop rock eg. Reo Speedwagon and especially for Yes very very different from what they used to sound. Same goes for the latter post Peter Gabriel Genesis albums. My apologies if the usage of "American" word caused confusion. Pls excuse me while I get the tune "Owner of a Lonely Heart" outta my head. This song is just so addictive
I will give a Saucerful of Secrets more spins but to my ears only of course am really not rating it when compared to Meddle or Animals. I have yet to listen to Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

Mary Chapin Carpenter - Stones in the Road. Nearly as good to me as her best "Between Here and Gone"

Hi Shah Zain,
Is your Porcupine Tree's "The Incident" a local pressing? Do you have gaps in between the tracks?

Hi Saw
Yes, local pressing, so there is an annoying gap between tracks. It should skip seamlessly by sound of it?

Yes. Apparently this is a defect that has been corrected in EU and replacement cds sent. Doubt we'll be this fortunate though

Re: What are you listening to right now?
In sequence tonight
Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill. My sister's friend borrowed mine many many moons ago and it never returned. Just ordered it last week and here it is. Great album and Ms Morissette sounds as angry as ever

Shearwater - Rook. Shearwater are a 4 piece from Austin and rather difficult to pigeonhole in style. Amazon calls them progressive folk and I do find similiarities with Noah and the Whale but with more rock elements. The album is fab though and a good test for bass and dynamics especially track 4 "Home Life" and 9 "The Snow Leopard"

Moby - Wait for Me. Moby goes a bit melancholy on this one and adds plenty of strings. Some of the tracks can pose for movie sountracks. I kinda like this though and rate it pretty good behind "Play". Bought the Deluxe edition which contains an extra CD of "ambient" mixes and a DVD.

Bro,
Yes.. I rate Hound of Love, Sensual World, Kick Inside and Aerial. And "The Innocents" is my favourite Erasure album apart from "The Circus"/"Two Ring Circus"

Band of Horses - Cease to Begin. Indie-rock sound.. Majestic!

Neil Young - Harvest. A classic country-folk-rock album!

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Fanfarlo - Reservoir. Fanfarlo is a London based indie pop band with members from Sweden, UK,.. This is their debut album and sometimes they sound like Noah and the Whale sometimes like a popier Sigur Ros. Most interesting concoction of styles with just enough variation to hold your interest throughout the album..

Nicholas Meier - Yuz. Mr Meier is a jazz guitarist and I really dig this album for its world music (Middle-Eastern, Eastern European, etc) influences. Great sax interplay too!

Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

Relaxing to some folkish pop after a long day..
Fairground Attraction - The Very Best of Fairground Attraction. At the time of their split Fairground Attraction had nearly enough material for a second album and these including those from their one an only album are included in this compilation

Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim. Debut album from Charlie Fink's (Noah and the Whale) previous beau and source of inspiration for NATW's concept breakup album. Can't wait to get her second and latest.

The title track Transatlanticism is one of Death Cab's best songs. But that's lapuk already, graduated from Death Cab years ago to some of his side projects like All-Time Quarterback.
I loike this...

Check out their cover of Magnetic Field's Why I Cry on this album. It's absolutely precious.

I don't dig their last album "Narrow Stairs" but to me "Transatlantism" is great. Used to sound all bright and shiny via the Apollo but the Ayon carries the recording thru beautifully.
Oh.. and now listening to this - The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die. Not same standard as "Fat of the Land" but to my ears better than the dire predecessor "Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned"

Listening to 2nd track of Disc 1, Space Manoeuvres brings back the memory of seeing Sasha and Digweed at Gatecrasher in Sheffield. No cd player or hi fi system can re-produce that atmosphere.

bjork twofer
hi azri, coincidentally uncle too istened to bjork this morn. bought the twofer series, got her Debut and Post for rm46, so happy la. there's a track on Post that tried my system's bass to the max , now got the upgraditis penyakit back. hmm.
And Hiromi Sonicbloom- wow, she doesn't look like a boss keyboardist but she is. She's like a fun Chick Corea with Tokyo kitsch thrown in for good measure.
King Crimson - Beat. Read somewhere that Bill Bruford has retired so pulled this LP out and gave it a spin. wall of sound man, will miss u mr bruford.
