EL34 @ KT77 ?

Post by hasnul on Sun Nov 22, 2009 8:04 pm

As some of you guys might known that KT77 was supposed to be compatible with EL34 amps. But I saw some conflicting reports that not all EL34 audio amps are happy when fitted with KT77 !! Heck the amp might even get damaged !!

Any of you guys tried switching EL34 to KT77 ?

My amp can swap for KT66, KT77, EL34, 6CA7 no problem, because I ensure its biased correctly and a bit on the lower side for longivity, and doesn't exceed unusual B+ voltages of more than 460VDC. If you're knowledgeable of tube circuitry intimately and particularly of your own amplifer, than there's less fear of tube swap of near compatibles or alternatives. If you don't, relying on hearsay won't guarantee anything.
Yep, used all those before.

Based on your experience is there a marked difference in sound quality between KT77 & EL34? The SED Winged C EL34 I'm using is light on the lower frequencies, not that they are missing but are usually restrained. Nevertheless I find its a good tube for my kind of music.

For me, I won't bother local sources. Buy from Ebay, online shops or impose on a buddy who happen to be at a well known tube shop in S'pore to check it out, phone back for immediate decision.

Thought so. I think most reliable sources would be Tubedepot.

Answer is very obvious. I can't even buy my LP12 belt from here.
