LP, CD, DVD and BD Shops - Pricing and Discounts
Hi all,
I thought of sharing this info so that everyone can expect what kind of pricing/discount to get from these shops:
1. Rock Corner The Curve: 10% on LPs and 5 to 10% on CDs
2. Rock Corner The Gardens: 10% on LPs and 5 to 10% on CDs
3. Rock Corner KLCC: 5% on LPs and ZERO on CDs
4. EZ Video KLCC: 10% on BDs and DVDs (except Best Buy) and 5% on CDs
Do add to the list if you have more info of other shops.

Re: LP, CD, DVD and BD Shops - Pricing and Discounts
Noticed some LP's have actually increased in price for some reason since last observed earlier in the year. Mark up, then mark down.
Especially I know who does that quite blatantly. No names forthcoming.
Not a good thing!

Re: LP, CD, DVD and BD Shops - Pricing and Discounts
Elhefe,
I didn't know can get discounts from Rock Corners; any password or log in necessary? . No wonder they'd happily bundle the 'Rock Corner' recyclable bags with the LPs. Of late been buying from the Curve and 1 Utama shops... and last Saturday reacquainted with a Sting's old album DotBT for RM70 which I thought RC @the Curve mistakenly stuck the wrong price tag.. good quality too.
Never heard it on vinyl before and easily recommended..
Thanks for the info bro..
Btw, is the CMY Vinyl get together happening ... I thought there was something posted about it over the weekend..

Re: LP, CD, DVD and BD Shops - Pricing and Discounts
Bro zeebee,
I use the concept of Segan bertanya Sesat jalan....or segan bertanya, rugi poket hehehehe....
Yes. Rock Corners do give out discount. Partially I think because they do overcharge on some of the LPs. But at the same time, they also have bargains.
I got the following at RM48:
1. Weezer - Raditute
2. The Darkness - the 2nd album...too long of a title
3. Duffy - Warwick Avenue album.
CMY Sg Wang LP shop event still on:
Sat 10th Dec, 11 am to 9 pm. (specific lunch and TT session at 1230 to 130 pm also some easy listening till 3 pm).

If you know who does such things, I think it's to the benefit of consumers that they be named and shamed, lest anyone else gets shafted by such unscrupulous business practices...

Re: LP, CD, DVD and BD Shops - Pricing and Discounts
CD-Rama in Popular book store is having a Christmas sale since 1st December. Some CDs have RM10 off.
Bought Yanni "The Inspiring Journey" which is a 2-box CD after listening to the music at a friend's place. Great music but sound quality is slightly lacking but listenable. In fact one track is skipping, need to get to the store tomorrow to have the CD exchanged.
Bought another Yanni's latest album "Truth of Touch". This one is a must have for Yanni fans. Sound quality is excellent and music is fantastic, much better than his older works IMO. Highly recommended.

What ever said and done....price of LP's are a bit on the high side in MY. Even with their discounts...one gimmick - hike up 15% and give 10% discount.
Still make profit & +5%.
Yes to some its business sense and the need to survive but .....that much....
cheers

Re: LP, CD, DVD and BD Shops - Pricing and Discounts
I noticed that for CDs below RM40, no discount as its already at cost.
Anything above RM40, is subject to some discount. Some 5% some 10%.
I'm speaking of Rock Corner outlets.

The Rock Corner outlets are all franchised and they don't have a consistent discount policy. Many times have I had to fake a temper tantrum in order to get my rightful discount...

Most of my recent purchases of CDs are online. Local prices are 'killing music'..

Re: LP, CD, DVD and BD Shops - Pricing and Discounts
I reckon people who buy online are few compared to countless who still hop to the shop and buy, impulsively or not. I don't think price is an issue to these people. All these shops are still thriving on,bearing their high rental and operational cost every month. Their staff can't be working for peanuts. Nothing much anyone can do, only to shop for the best deal in town and get it instantly. Its not surprising to me finding a number of LP re-issues (new ones) are around the same figures (maybe those I've targetted as potential buy) online and local price. Of course some are really obscene prices which I'll not buy.
Can't help it lah, our currency rate is always lower and we'll not see imported cd's priced like US or EU. RM10-15 each?, I don't think it'll ever happen. Local artist and pressings seem to be in that price range now.

Re: LP, CD, DVD and BD Shops - Pricing and Discounts
Or go Singapore... even new records there are more reasonably priced than here... And I imagine rents and salaries to be much higher there, although the one big fat qualifier I'd stick on this statement is that most of the record stores I've visited at Adelphi are owner-operated, meaning less overheads once again...

Re: LP, CD, DVD and BD Shops - Pricing and Discounts
Owner operated places are certainly a welcome sign for lower prices. For example, I know of some electronics shop which is owner operated and thus can easily offer "dealer" prices to any genuine customer. Other competing shops selling the same products can't do the same and thereon just can't compete. Coming back to Rock corner or some others, prices remain sky high, unless some products are at giveaway prices.

Let's hope this newly to be opened vinyl specialty outlet of CMY has offers which would make it worthwhile to go thru the traffic (both human and machine) to do our LP shopping

Price ranges from RM45 to RM99 to RM139 to RM159. Selection is vast. Too vast for some people... Over 4000 pieces to go through.
Quality is respective to the pricing above.

Re: LP, CD, DVD and BD Shops - Pricing and Discounts
it's an outing... good for wife, good for vinyl lover... not to mention it's all there rather than ad hoc stock randomly appearing on the shelves here at exorbitant prices and terrible shopping experiences.
Flight ticket can be as low as rm400.00
Hotel room RM300-400.00
Handbag, RM1000-10,000.00 but hey, our hifi gear altogether far exceeds these figures.
Just on principle alone i think prices here are messed up and i don't like how there are no knowledgeable retailers.

Better still, four vinyl lovers, one car, share petrol and tol. KL - Spore (7:00 am - 11:00 am) shop for vinyl, briyani at Arab Street then Spore - KL....very tiring but do-able. Better if driving in JB registered car, less chance of 100% customs inspection at Tuas.....

Just out of curiousity, wot would ye peg as reasonable prices fer new & used LPs?
And wot would ye want a retailer to know?

Pretty much in the price range due to the resurgence of the "Black Frisbie" in MY but....... ?
I would second that suggestion, twice a year trip to pick up the much needed LP's. Even the hardware sold across the border is not too bad in terms of pricing. But thats a different ball game.
With Air Asia Enticing offers....fly in and fly out with a RM10.00 bus ride to city centre. Tiring...maybe...but the excitment....

To me if the trip to SG is specific to purchase LP, its not worth it. Unless you are already going there for a business trip or any other reason, then its worth the time and effort to drop by Adelphi.
For equipment, I am put off purchasing from SG due to the warranty is not covered by the dealer in Malaysia.

Aiseh...sudah kantoi heheheh.
Yes fellow forummers. I do purchase LPs from acai and since this is a thread for sharing info on media sourcing....I have a good experience with acai...from the LP quality and also delivery packaging.
To add, I also purchase from skfong (based in SG)- another regular here as LP supplier. Also good experience.

There is always two sides of the coin view and it's every individual's preference to purchase via various channels.
Vinyl's are being sold at varying price range and that baffles me...ex. Muddy Waters at RM150.00 for a used item and many more....but thats up to the seller and have nothing against their pricing methodology.
As to all my purchases locally if it falls within a certain price bracket then local is where i get my Hifi related stuff but if it's above that price bracket then it's purchased out of MY.
cheers

One possibility is that retailers in Malaysia are of the belief that turntable users are considered high-end and therefore price the software accordingly.
If this were to be the case, it would not spell well for the future of the medium as it would handicap it right when the renaissance has just begun.

Working in a company which depends on sales as well, I must also understand that these hifi shops or dealers are there to make a profit as well. So I too put a bracket in which I believe the dealer can meet. The bracket is usually market price in UK or US. When I was in the UK, there was no question like 'Got discount?'. Most of us dont even dare to ask.
I would never again purchase a hifi kit overseas unless I cannot get it here or the local dealer will cover the warranty or its a 2nd hand unit.
I have 2 experiences of purchasing a high end headphone and DAC from overseas brand new which is cheaper than here, but end up costing more when I had to send back the unit to overseas for repairs.
As for LPs, since there is no rule on the pricing here, I usually go in an LP shop with certain amount of budget for that month and stick to that.

Re: LP, CD, DVD and BD Shops - Pricing and Discounts
El...
Most of my hardware are preowned or NOS and are in immaculate condition and "X" generation behind the present models. So I have owned a onetime market killer ....so to say.... . Hardware wise i am pretty much where I want it to be with a budget cap.
Pretty much focusing on acquiring CD's / LP's that we ( me & wifey ) sought after.....
Concur with your thoughts as well...being "profit" driven. But does it need to be at the extreme level.... where else shipping or crossing the border to acquire the said product cost much much lesser. I was able to purchase "X number of LP's for the cost of one Muddy Water's LP sold in MY.
So to summarize....selling one or selling 10 LP's at a reasonable price gets better coverage, exposure ( advertising ) and the $$$$ ?
So, as what Jedi reflected in his post would this "stun" the growth....would this pricing model segmentize the market to the " I can and I cannot afford " enthusiast That's a question that pops up in my mind as well and a possibility a wider segment of society
cheers

I'm still on the lookout to buy a few more LP's, probably never find them here in MY, because they're rather obscure and never landed on these shores. Probably unpopular, never was a hit but I see them as enjoyable music.
Ebay seems the only avenue to buy these.

For LPs, I guess it is a bit tricky....as I mention, I think there is no rule set for dealers to put how much profit on the LPs sold, so the can simply put the mark up.
With regards to Muddy Waters, I think there are few people saying that they bought it for so expensive. How expensive is it? I bought it for RM 74 from Rock Corner.
