I had seen an internal photo of the CD94 and it has a striking resemblance to my Quad 66CD. Afterall, both use the same chipset. Must be a great sounding player like the Quad.

Quad 66CD uses CDM 4 and not CDM 1 as in the Marantz CD94/99.
They are totally different animal.

To be precise on the CDM4 variants, it is the CDM4/16.

Never quite own able one (can't afford it then), but remembered listening to one belonging to friend with a nice tube setup (I think Jadis) quite a number of years back in Melbourne. Very impressed when listening to Human Nature (off Michael Jackson's Thriller, Miles Davis take of the same song is great too). Somehow left quite an impression to me and till today I still can't get the same resolving detail and sweetness/smoothness of the synth and the 'marakesh' of the CD94 from this track.

sorry bro, can't quite recall the speakers ... but hey, it's almost deja vu about 3 weeks ago when I audit a tube DAC (done locally, you can hazard a guess who ) and lo and behold, the was a Marantz 94 and a TLC 1 (heavy beast) with MJ's latest 25th Anniversary, used as direct comparo or transport and of course Human Nature was on rotation. Speakers, full-range hybrid horn/full range (almost ceiling height) and a pair 300B SET with my Benchmark DAC1 also as comparo.. wow, needless to say I'd be only the 2nd person to buy the new tube DAC, hope to get it before CNY. Pity the CD 94 wasn't on sale, still wonderful as ever..
I dunno about the Benchmark, despite it's Class A rating in Stereophile, there's something not quite ___ (fill in the blank to your own liking).. Maybe partly because still 'dara lagi' not fully broken since I got it around September 09..
Anyway, shall keep u posted..
Cheers,
zb

What I mean, minor mod is ok. Not like 1 of my friend who change all the opamp in the servo, an outboard power supply with 6 transformers. Almost every parts he change. This defeats the perpose of getting a cd94. Might as well buy a cd99 transport n look for a dac/ tube dac.
I have my cd 94mk1 mod as well, maybe we can exchange our view.

Hey Noodles,
Gosh i would say very little changing if any for a CD94 if i got one. Its perfect, my tech said one of the best sounding cd players he's heard... but if they come up, they are $$$
The lower level marantz like mine well mods are fine.

Re: Marantz CD94 CD player fans
By taking out both digital n headphone out, the player will be quieter bcos digital n headphone share the same psu with other sections.
Oh yes, the 1541 is a good dac chip, I did try with 1541s1 n 1541s2 n also 1541r1. I like 1541s2 the most.

I don't think so....its a weaker sibling of the 1541a, even 1549 sounds better.

Re: Marantz CD94 CD player fans
i have modded the TDA1541a with the DEM reclocking and I2S attenuation. boy, it sounds so amazing. DEM reclocking, or Dynamic Element matching reclocking, is simply reducing the intermodulation cause by the external clock feeding into the DAC. What you hear is focus and accuracy.

Re: Marantz CD94 CD player fans
Hey guys, 1543 or 1549 chip set can it direct replace able to the 1541a in cd 94?
Cd 94 sounded good not only depands on 1541, it's cdm1 transport, glass len, complex servo circuit n servo motor, swing arm, die cast aluminium casing also contribute to the sound.
If u say outboard dac, then u need to go for cd99 transport. 1541a is more towards analog sounding . If u want more accurate n dynamic sounding? Then go for pcm63 or pcm1704 with tube output or even transformer output.
Cheers,

Re: Marantz CD94 CD player fans
No la, pin out is different i nfact 1549 does not even have its BIG outer chip casing like the 1541A, its tiny in comparison but even the 1541A is that sized chip in a big chip casing. Quite surprised when I saw it in a site somewhere on the internet.
1549 was only used in 2 Phillips model and one Marantz model of cd players, and probably in the MIcro Mega Minium model that was sold over on these forums months ago, ultra rare.
Yea, the reason for 94 to sound so good is because of its CDM 1 swing arm mechanism. THe 94MkII in fact was reviewed as being hell of a super transport compared to many other super high end transports. IN fact I was told by the reviewer himself the 94 sounds better as a transport better than itself as a cd player for some reasons. Thus I can imagine the CD 99 to be really good as well.
Hey noodle88, did you know that the 1541A can be dynamic and analog at the same time with the right tube output stage.
It becomes a totally different animal when certain modifications are done to the DAC board. This is a very recent discovery. Does not changes its analogue sound but imagine it becomes hyper dynamic!

Notice how he has raved and talk about all players and DAC that uses the 1541A. Its really that good after valve output. The 1541a on itself is a weak I out DAC, needs valve amplication to really shine.
THat is why the new acclaimed AMR CD 777 uses the TDA1541A nos DAC chip with valve output as standard.

Yes I did, I put the cap like you suggested next to the pin on the socket leg and reverse in polarity cause its flows opposite ma, did it the wrong way first time ai ya so gotta desolder and re solider new ones though close to it. I have the R1, S1 Crown but cannot get the S2 crown le, damn hard to find, almost impossible.
Now the DAC is like a 1541A on steroids!

Re: Marantz CD94 CD player fans
I do come across people using vcap as power supply bypass cap. But I would say not in dac section. A smd ceremic will do the job well why use vcap that 1000 times more expensive, yet vcap can't do a better job at dac psu which involve Lo voltage (+5, -14 n -4). If u really go that extream then go for cog type smd.

Re: Marantz CD94 CD player fans
I am always eager to improve the output of TDA1541a on its dynamics. Good that DX has improve it.
The fact that TDA1541a in NOS mode has 3dB drop out at high freq frightens me. putting in a sinx/x dindt help either. so i went into tube output stage with a ecc88. certainly I would like to hear out the tube on steroid.
then I tried all sorts of current mirror, simple and not so simple current out drivers. in the end, burn the DAC chip. a lesson well learnt. interestingly, the most glaring improvement in the TDA1541a has again been the DEM dynamic reclocking. It sorts of bring the TDA1541a to the TDA1541a double Crown.

Re: Marantz CD94 CD player fans
Yes, DEM reclocking may helps. Most of the time the matching of powercord, wire output to RCA , interconnects, n RCA socket can improve it's dynamic. For example the reduction in highs in nos mod may over come by using fine solid core silver as output wire to RCA , this will enhance it's highs.

The ECC88 is less than ideal in a tube output stage for the weak I out TDA 1541A DAC, ( Was running that for a year) thus running the Russian 6n2p ala Lampizator style stage doesn't matter in SRPP or anode follower stage increases the gain many folds , definitely like the real steroids for the TDA 1541A dac.

There is a shop on the 3rd storey at Sim Lim Tower selling laser head. Maybe you could give it a try if you happen to drop by.

I too have a CD 880 that I earlier thought had this problem. How did you determine that its the laser head that gone kaput? Can you list the symptoms of what its doing now?
I had the exact same problem earlier and I thought it was the same but I realize with these players, being this old the capacitors to the power supply for the laser assembly can sometimes dry out or discharge itself out when not in use for a long time. After firing it up a few times, the laser moved and since then I have been putting current through it to keep the capacitors ' charged ' up.
Mr. Oh from Old Klang road is notoriously famous for repairing these players and this is what he has advised me earlier. THe lasers have a long life span I was told of you don't actually put a disc in they do not read and thus the laser life is not compromised. What happens is that the head does not move thus it cannot read anything if it does not move thus old capacitors are a suspect.
Call him and he will be happy to help you sort it out. I know a fellow forumer here that had his Marantz 94 repaired I guess for the same problems. THese CDM's are old but they are built very tough as well.
Good luck!
Regards
Dixon
