Errr... I just buy what I enjoy rather than worry if its rare or not. The music should be the no.1 criteria..

Re: What Rare Collection Of CD or LP Do You Have
Mobile Fidelity, DCC, CBS Mastersound albums. Many of these are out of print and selling for obscene prices online. Out of print titles may be considered rare, but then its your personal preference ultimately.
As for LP's, 10" LP's from a past era, Malay artist LP's are also now very expensive since the likes of EMI have shut down their Asian music, too many to list. Mint to excellent LP's are rare here.
If I have numerous valuable, rare and most desirable ones, they were acquired from at least 20 years ago till late early 21st century...thats about it. You can still find many online or used but there's a price, patience and effort to acquiring them.My 2 sen.

Incidently how much would one pay for a MOFI CD - U2's "The Joshua Tree"? I think I got that > 10 years ago

Re: What Rare Collection Of CD or LP Do You Have
I'd gauge roughly or like one say, more or less, at Ebay, if any is up for sale. Of course you form your own conclusion.
Say I have a few Mofi albums, still SEALED and never used.. I could say its worth a few hundred US$ but will anyone buy them?..its anyone's guess. I have one particular rare album of a long oldie artist. I picked it up last year for peanuts (considered used but its actually NOS and mint). This same cd was sold for nearly US$600 final bid on Ebay a few years back.

Similar to llSaw views but some rare items are sold at an "ABSURD Price"
so the WEB is where I purchase these items.
Take for an example, a "Bob Marley or Santana or Beatles" LP in MY its sold at RM100 and above. I got mine at a fraction from the WEB with transportation. Take a casual stroll at the famous Flea Market in KL and you can understand what I mean.
cheers

Re: What Rare Collection Of CD or LP Do You Have
Thats why I said earlier, many desirable things like cd's and LP's in particular are acquired through patience, price, effort (as in hunting around constantly or waiting time, probable taxes or risk of loss) and perhaps most evidently OPPORTUNITY by availibility to own it.
At that flea market, its THERE in front of you at RMxx. Buying online may be cheaper but no guarantee you'd get it save for "buy it now". I deem most of those flea market sellers are inherently business opportunists trying to make a killing everytime, nothing really less. Quite typical here.
Perhaps thank your lucky stars in some ways we're not in America. Do you really think every American have luxury or the convenience of buying anything by taking a short drive to the flea market, perhaps there isnt any or much choice in finding desirable things just around the corner. I reckon we can be considered spoilt for choice, due to numerous shopping places in Klang Valley, even for some S'pore ain't too far either. Ok..lets leave the Americans with their own set of logistical problems, if any. Get back on track next.

Actually I get 80% of my CDs nowadays from the web anyway. What is being sold in our regular local shops are mostly errrr.. too commercialised for my taste

Yes, everyone will find their own unique way of buying what they desire. It all depends on one's own affordability and ingenuity of getting what they want even by hook or crook. Nomal lah!..
Yet again, its opportunity. Pointless if one have all the money but NONE of it or the price you expect at that point of time...back to patience then.

CM...
Yes, I should thank my lucky stars. But I do practice caution when buying from the WEB and I do go back to the regular person that I get my stuff and if he does not have it in his stable , he would gladly source the item for me.Price wise its still much cheaper than local LP's. Have built the relationship and understanding. Rule's out lots of unwanted possibilities.
Local traders at the "flea market", selling a "Best of Santana" LP for RM1**.00 compared to the WEB at RM40.00 with transportation. I would bet that these "traders" get the items from the WEB as well and in large quantity.
Seen, "trader A" in the flea market pick up a "Boney M" ( local pressing ) from "trader B" at RM10.00 and selling it at RM40. And he is still trying to sell it.
I would not want to pay that amount if I can get them cheaper somewhere else. But if the price is reasonable locally, slightly higher than the cost sole on WEB I would buy it locally.
America is such a BIG BIG APPLE so the WEB is the answer for their trading activities. There are some shops that cater to this needs but its scattered around.
cheers

You me or anyone else obviously exercise caution buying from anywhere, not just the web. Just like you or anyone else will also know banking an advance payment to someone locally whom is a complete stranger (since so many con cases in the past) for some item is also a DAFT act, and forum moderators seriously caution everyone the risk of loosing their money.
Yes, I'm sure you folks are wise enough by now and continue to do so.
I remember a friend in USA saying, its cheaper to buy a cd album online rather than from the local shop...so he says. We're not in USA, so circumstances are different here. We cannot use USA as a benchmark for everything, but merely as a guide somehow.
Ok..somehow I happen to buy albums, CD or LP that don't seem to be popular anymore and cheap enough to afford easily. They may be some soundtrack, long forgotten artist. But when I happen to demo them to some individuals...Wah.. Where you find this?, how much?...ahhh the usual inquisitive character springs out of them. OK..I think I'll keep those my trade secret, for fear the price may be hiked for little or no reason.
Update: Just received 6 CD re-issues ordered late last month.. Chinese Cd reissue of LP's long forgotten by many. Wow... enjoying it right now. There was a sale of these and took advantage of it. The lot less than US$40 total...free shipping on top of it.

I agree with cmboy that we use USA as guide only because some of those items in WEB especially from US are selling more expensive if plus shipping. Even Asia country are selling cheaper with free shipping if you buy certain amount of CDs. I still remember I got my Sheffield Lab - Kodo Gold disc at Flea Market in KL which he sold to me for RM50 which in WEB sell for USD150-200, like wingman said thank to my lucky stars.

I'm sure every music collector here have their experience of wins and losses. Years ago I found a stack of 1st pressings of various titles of Sheffield lab albums. 9 albums I think for a mere RM9 each.
Yes, I have that Kodo Gold disc too. Mint and used for Rm20+ for it I think as far as I remember.

Re: What Rare Collection Of CD or LP Do You Have
I think the "golden age" of acquiring many used or desirable cd's were between earlier 1995 and 2005 and thats it. Look at what at least 3-4 KLAV shows had to offer, very dismal and many repeats of so called "audiophile" or value for money albums. I came back with nearly nothing past 3 shows, except for some ahem ahem ones for casual listening in my kitchen or bedroom music system.
I remember the 1st or 2nd KLAV show I bought a few pieces of Jennifer Warnes Hunter and Raincoat Canada pressed albums. Still have a couple of them still sealed copies. Now where the heck to find them, except remastered ones at 3 figure prices?. Perhaps those remasters are better I don't know..but I'm quite contented with those discs I have. I won't even consider the so called limited edition re-released LP as its too pricy.

Web means the internet websites like Ebay or other places that you can find deals.
Yes, and I know of those flea market vendors trading on the internet, buy AND sell.
BTW, lucky me I have access to a great buddy who may own stacks of very very collectible LP albums together with a great system to boot. I'll probably never find or afford it, so I go to his place often and play them all I want till I'm sick of it. Main thing is my friend's music taste is very similar to mine. Do I think I really need to splash out and buy the same stuff he owns?..not neccessarily from my POV. Just my own pragmatic approach to things.

Oh.. ebay. Okay okay.
I saw the Elusive Disc weblink and I checked it out.
Seems not too bad.
Some of us here just dont have the luck to get nice pressings at a bargain because not all of us started this hobby early.
Those who start the audiophile journey just recently will not have such privilege to get some of the nice albums at low prices.
Just too late for that as the prices have already jacked up.

True!.. I got most of my later collection when that PJ flea market started and LP's were like throwouts, junk, useless, obsolete stuff, rubbish...call it what you want. RM5 or less EACH!..some even for Rm1 each. Bought a few hundred of them a month. Sorry if this make anyone envious. My buddy did the same thing, LOCK STOCK and BARREL sapu everything from every well known Malay artists to now very valuable 10" LP's of REAL SHANGHAINESE ERA type music. I think these LP's now are highly sought after and knowledgeable people are willing to pay a BOMB for it!..don't even care if the wife comes after with a parang...hahaha!
Ok lah.. on the practical side I'd settle for very carefully selected CD re-issues if I can't get the LP. I've NOT given up entirely on CD media. I still play mp3's in my car for practicality.
Yes, received 6 of them this afternoon, made my day!

I don't think that holds much water now. Buyers view a lot broader and much wiser now. So don't throw anything out without thinking 3-4 times.

By the way, I am just curious why the re-issues of the LPs (like The Hunter for eg) are only limited to few thousands.
Why dont they make more? Sound quality very poor after few thousand pcs?

Yes you are right llsaw. I still remember few years back I had a list of album title (about 30 titles) & went to ask some of the music shop in KL (like Tower Records in KLCC, Rock Music & Victoria Music) but end up not even 5 title our local shop have. So what to do, have to get from WEB. Maybe our local shop don't carry so much of audiophile CDs as the cost is more expensive plus our Malaysia boleh import tax.

Yup llsaw's taste in music is exquisite. If he doesn't mind, he can post the albums which are hard to get here and we can learn from his preference in music. Or I'm sure there are many good samaritans in this forum. Perhaps we can notify him if we come across the cds he is looking for.

You'd severly regret if I put a number, but you can easily guess when I flipped through my buddy's collection and the price he paid for some recently. Of course there are those which are still sought after by collectors especially some well known Shanghai divas that have appeared on the last lot of EMI released Shanghai divas digital remasters. I tend to think my buddy is more of a collector than actually playing those discs. Anyhow, I enjoy the nostalgia and listening to something way apart from the streamline music. I don't have to worry and headache of spending loads of money on them. I wanna listen and enjoy it, I make an appointment to pop by at nite and have it all to myself.

One sure way is to Google your preferred LP / CD title. That would take you to a few e-sites that are selling them and one of it is ElusiveDisc. You would find more as you scroll along. Good Luck.

Have you tried " Ampang Park " ??? They do have some very good collection of CD's. Got my "Spanish Guitar" Audiphile CD from there as well.
cheers

You are not alone. I also throw away a big pile away in the late 80s-most of them given to me by a friend.

Re: What Rare Collection Of CD or LP Do You Have
I just recalled, a number of my most rare cd's are some made for TV and movie soundtrack hardly remembered nor vastly popular. Actually some of these were shown on local TV decades ago. Its not like the familiar, The Sound of Music, James Bond, Titanic, Last Samurai or The Gladiator movie soundtracks.
1. Les Adventures of David Balfour (1978) aka Kidnapped- novel by Robert Louis Stevenson - Composer Vladimir Cosma. Extremely rare
2. Mary, Queen of Scots (1971) Composer John Barry, LP and CD
3. The Canterville Ghost (2005) Composer Enerst Troost -Promo CD only released, no retail ever released.
4. Geoffrey Burgon - Brideshead Revisited, Mobile Fidelity disc, now out of print
5. Elmer Bernstein - The Ten Commandments (1989) out of print
6. Trevor Jones - Merlin (1998) possibly still available.
7. Miklos Rozsa - Ben Hur (1989) out of print
8. John Barry - Somewhere In Time (1980) MCA masterdisc Gold, out of print.
9. Richard Hartley - Princess Caraboo (1994), possibly still available
10. Ron Goodwin & Sir William Walton - Battle Of Britain (1999) remastered version still available
11. Various Artists - Back To The Future (1985) MCA Japan pressed, possibly one of my 1st cd's.
12. The Myth (Jackie Chan San-Wa, Soundtrack (2005) Original disc, now rare. China ones are fake copies.
Many more, lazy to list.
Some of these are considered audiophile quality, some not, but nevertheless either out of print or very rare now. Nearly all above were acquired from abroad.

Re: What Rare Collection Of CD or LP Do You Have
One classical piece I have found unexpectedly rare, as in very rarely played eventhough it's one of the best violin composition there is, is 'Czardas' version by Vittorio Monti. So far, other than the unfaithfully yours soundtrack, I have only found 1 CD with this music, and that also is a collection of various music. I have not found any famous violinist like Heifez, etc playing it even. But the music has often appeared in the background in movies, TV, etc. I have been monitoring eBay for years and I have never found a single LP with this song !

Talking about Jascha Heifez, I do have couple of his violin CDs.
a) Selection from the Heifetz Collection

b) Brahms & Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto - Jascha Heifetz ; conducted by Fritz Reiner with Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Bought this from Victoria Amcorp two years.

Hi Arte....
So you have tried that shop....
Another choice would be at "AMCORP MALL" = FLEA MARKET, there are two dedicated CD sellers ( mostly second hand ) and you have a few other non dedicated sellers as well.
Happy Hunting.
Cheers

I got this one .... Took it for cleaning at my regular neighbourhood hifi shop and the
mr. SUPER ULTIMATE VINYL GRANDMASTER (whom as always so chooses to remain anonymous lest his name be used to lend weight in hifi forums) actually played this whole piece for start to finish... both sides!
Cheet Atkins, Finger-style Guitar.
Mid 1950s pressing, mono.

Hi Auronthas,
Where you got your Heifetz XRCD from? I do have the 1st press for both normal CDs under RCA. They are my favourite when it come to classical music, excellent perfomance by Heifetz.
Hi WongKN,
Don't mind to load image of your CD title `Czardas' to share. I'm also curious to know this album. Thx

Normal ones like LOBO, MJ and WHAM are the ones that I have.
Most of them are locally pressed but I am very satisfied with them.
Some of them are singles. Last time I bought them from HMV in Spore.

ARTESUANO,
I don't have the proper album. I just have a compilation CD of which one of the tracks is Czardas. I have been hunting for a proper album for many years already, though of LP lar, not CD. I would think there -should- be a CD of it somewhere....

Yah, I think the compilation CD's track on Czardas is from this album.
