(Advice appreciated) noise in left speaker (on & off)

Post by toda6866 on Wed Jan 13, 2010 3:54 pm

hi fellows,

left side of my Tannoy M2 (2 way bookshelf) is giving noises from time to time, sometimes its not there but sometimes its there. During the 'transition' (ie. from not noisy to noisy) there's some 'click' sounds coming from it. theres no telling when its noisy when its not....but most of the time it is

Oh btw, there's no noise at all if no signal, only when i play music then i can hear all the notes full of noise n grains...like some over driven jln pasar speakers
unless i play it at whisper volume... but i dont blast my speakers all out anyway

if i listen closely, both tweeter and woofer driver is emitting the noise....could it be the crossover? or could it b some loose wires inside the speaker?

nvr drop the speaker before...

im planning to open up the speaker cabinet to investigate, but is this advisable?

i've tried swapping the speakers but confirmed its not the source problem/ amp output prob

cheers!

It could be the voice coil rubbing against the surrounding magnet.

Try turning your speaker upside down - and see whether the noise is still there.

If you have the courage, just push the diaphragm sideways slightly and circumferentially. If at any point it stops, then it's the voice coil chafing against the magnet. That's what happened to my Monitor Audio woofer. In my case, it's repairable, DIY!...

Try to switch the Speakers from Left to Right and Vice Versa. If you have
the sound coming only from specific channel, say for eq: Left even when you
switch Speaker position, then it is your Amp (one Channel problem- could be
one of the Capacitors has gone " Kaput " in one of the Channel.

from the initial description, it s unlikely to be channel specific, but more likely to be speaker-specific. But nevertheless, yes, swap the connections and see if the noise stays with the same speaker, or follows to the next speaker.

If it follows, its an electronic problem, leaky capacitor or something from the amp side.

OK, since you've tried swapping connections already and it stays with the particular speaker,

A few possible scenarios:
1) Your woofer's voice-coil is warped. U have my sympathies.

2) Some internal cabling is rattling against the cabinet.

3) One or more of the crossover's circuit board screw has come loose.

4) or since u mentioned that both tweeter & woofer makes thise noise. Does it sound "electronic" like a buzzing sound?? , Maybe a capacitor or some other components on that crossover is kaput. Unlikely, but possible!

Either way, do go ahead and open it up to take a look. Its already buzzing a noise. Might as well investigate further.

Also, try and press the woofer cone to actuate it and feel/hear for any rubbing noises or not, (jazzy939's recommendation) . If u do, then its problem no.(1) ...

toda,
Just to confirm.
Do not power your system.
Gently push the speaker diaphragm in and out with your fingers.(like normal speaker operation when it is powered)
Can you feel/hear any chafing/rubbing noises?
This will roughly confirm if your voice coil or the whole speaker cone is not concentric. This may be due to age. My Monitor Audio was 20+years..
Good luck bro!

fellows, thks again for all the overwhelm responses

its not the left right thingy.....sound stays with speaker

jazz, i tried doing dat, but its dead quiet, cant feel anything rubbing against it either....

oh btw, the noise is apparent on both drivers ie. woofer n tweeter ....sounds distorted, grainy like from poor source recording

Try troubleshooting the crossover circuit board then... could be a mechanical problem, or a component (capacitor, coil/inductor, resistor...) problem. Or could just be a "dry joint" from the soldered connections.

I got this problem on my left channel. Used to encounter static burst too prior to the left speaker exhibiting the distorted sound(sound like having a bad connection somewhere).

Trace the problem to be from the power amp - tapping on top of the casing a few times would eliminate the distortion. Check components in power amp show all ok. Suspect some components replaced by previous owner to be "dry jonted". To lazy to resolder so leave it as it is.

tycham,
amplifier defects escpecially when it is channel specific will stay with the affected channel even when you switched speakers.. not in toda's case as it's speaker specific which we have zoomed in..
The drivers seemed to be ok, next to eliminate would be the crossover.
Have to eliminate the speakers internal wiring first.. we get the easy one out of the way.. if the wires look good time to 'disect' the crossover.. Razz

hope its not x-over in my case, or else its gonna b a tough nut for me 2 crack....

i still havnt got a solder yet.... all these gotta wait till my exam over then go 'shopping'

toda,
while you're at it, put also a multimeter in the shopping list if you do not have any. Soldering iron wise, get a Hakko Presto. Good for beginner and advance DIY alike..
