Post by ongaaron on Fri Jan 15, 2010 6:31 pm

Gentlemen,
Need your advice badly. My old cd collection which was not used for a few months emits static sound. It only happened on a few particular tracks. Does a demagnitiser work on this particular case?
Thanking you all in advance.

First of all, is the CD disc's surface dirty or scratched ?

If so, clean it. Soap & water & a lint-free cloth (like those for wiping spectacles) is fine.

Otherwise,
the static sound is most likely caused by mis-tracking. Nothing to do with demagnetizing.

Your CD player's laser lens is either dirty, or its about to kaput.

If u are a DIY'er, u can open up the cd player, and clean the lens with a cotton bud & isopropyl alcohol. Also check that the laser assembly's gear rail is still nicely greased because if its dried up or gritty, it will cause mistracking as well.

If after all the above and u still get static pops, then the Laser is kaput.

Hi,
I think cd can go rosak one. I have 1 imported cd (old) rosak even visually still in perfect condition,no wrap no scratches , not the whole album but selected tracks are distorted. Nothing to do with the cdp but the cd itself. Tried to clean but don't work.

I also suspect it is the cd because it only happened on a particular track and lyrics only. I will also take your advice to clean the lens. Thanks Gentlemen.

Failing which(the cleaning I mean) either the lens or CDs. Then 1 last way to still enjoy your CD collection. Use your PC to read/rig and burn a copy for playback, but make sure it's a 1x or 2x burn speed. Well at least u can still enjoy your cd collection. Do make sure u actually own the CDs if not it's a violation to make another copy. And no amount of explanations will satisfy on lookers/your friends that it's for your own enjoyment anyway! Good luck
