KLIAV 2018 CD
I noticed that track 9’s synopsis asking listeners to use crosstalk cancellation (XTC) to hear this binaural recording with loudspeakers. How are we supposed to do that?
Re: KLIAV 2018 CD
Generally speaking, crosstalk cancellation is achieved by cancelling those left side signal coming out from the left side speaker arriving to the right ear and vice-versa.
There are a couple of method and factors of achieving this. In this case, my take is leaning more towards speaker placement and listening room interaction with regards to the sound reproduction.
For track no.9, as what is stated in the booklet, the musician playing the sax. and guitar are moving around from the left side to the right side, but also forward and backward away from the recording microphone. When moving away from the microphone, the track gives the impression that the musical instrument is at a lower height and fading somewhat away. At times (especially the sax), it gives the illusion that it is playing from more than the speaker placement boundary (distance).
All-in-all, track number 9, is an excellent recording to show the sense of space in a recording.

Crosstalk cancellation cannot be achieved by speakers placement unless you physical isolate the left and right speaker sound reaching your ears.
There are only two true XTC method that are available right now. I am using one and it works for binaural and also stereo. The Ambiophonics thread is all about XTC.
I was just curious as to how they employed XTC as described in the synopsis.

Thanks for pointing to the thread and the extensive research that you've done. Great work!
Perhaps writing to Jo directly might shed some lights?

Just finished reading about the album. Daniel weiss was involved in the project and he is developing his own crosstalk cancellation speakers. I think he is using BACCH algorithm. Anyway, that recording is only partially binaural unlike Chesky binaural recordings.
