Marantz Cd63SE or cd63KI ?

Hi all, would like to ask whether the Marantz 63SE and 63KI has significant difference in sound quality?
i going to pair out with my audiolab, pls advise,

hi lim...KI version is much more better for any of marantz product,KI stand for Ken Ishiwata the hifi GURU that tune the equipment to equal for his standard...parts also upgrade litle bit for KI version...

i was thinking getting KI also, but it not easy to get in the used market, and what is the prices range on ?

For some reason the KI has incredible resale value in Bolehland fetching prices as high as 1K+ considering the fact that back when it was new it was 500GBP and <RM2.5K. There are also two interrelated caveats to consider:

1. The CD63MKII SE/KI is getting old and most have seen the good side of a decade or more of service
2. The Phillips transport (If I recall correctly it's the CDM12.1) is fragile and have been known to fail. In a decade of service mine failed twice. Once it had trouble reading CDs and the second the transport drawer could not open or close on its own. Had to use my own fingers. Both were repaired by my dealer.

The sound is classic Marantz and the KI offers much better bass impact and definition when compared to the SE. You however can't go wrong with either. I do find the detail retrieval, PRAT and soundstaging lacking compared to the latest cdps such as the Rega Apollo. Am unable to comment on DIY modded versions as I have not heard one. What IISaw said is correct. The CD mechanism doesnt last as long as the rest of the unit itself. If you look closely, the Mechanism is made in Malaysia.

Certainly the KI is a better sounding and better spec unit compare to the SE. I havent got chance to compare it with all the latest player in the market nowadays... I do believe it wont be anymore special over RM1K++ player out there.

just spoke to a mr repairman plus a dealer. they say some of these cdm12 transports could be recon types or could be 'oem' from china.

mr repairman bought a batch from a supplier in singapore and about half did not work.

plus buying from australia or overseas via the internet is risky business cos u don't know what is inside the parcel they send to u. if the transports the overseas seller sends 2 u do not work, there is no compensation.

don't mean to pour cold water on khlim_77's intention to buy cd63se or ki, but people hv to take into account such problems like availability of spare transports b4 they buy the player.

try that vintage_hk seller, he seems honest. 46 sold, not even one gave him negatif or neutral feeds. & buyers are from many parts of the world What a Face
