I still use my dated 8000Q for preamplifier duty and will continue to use it indefinitely. I find it very transparent and suffice whatever I throw at it. I did replace a couple of opamps and fast recovery diodes inside. Nothing more I would think of changing or replacing. I think there was a marginal improvement. Marginal, not greater, but enough for me.

P.S. Please do not simply think of replacing the opamps to anything you feel like plonking in just because its audiophile rated. The PCB is double layer and the VE+- voltage to the opamps is 20VDC. Not every opamp can operate at this voltage.

Finally, after 2 years of hunting, I found a very good condition used 8000Q to match with 8000M+8200CD all the way from Singapore.

Thanks to James46 for having business with me. Very good dealer.

Now what am I supposed to do with the 8000S?
Hi Samn,

I've just found this topic and very Interesting read about the Audiolab Experience,
congrats for the 8000Q unit.

I am current also running 8000Q + 8000M and driving DLS R55 floorstander.  Prior to 8000Q and 8000M, i actually owned 8000S and SX in biamp mode and the latter really wow, i sold the 8000S for 8000M few years back when i changing to floorstander.

Since you have the sufficient setup now, do u mind to you share with us how is the performance of using 8000S + 8000M (as biamp) vs 8000Q + 8000M (pre-power) configuration ?

Not sure whether is my listening taste, i personally find 8000Q + 8000M is refined but is a bit dull or not sufficient details. I am not sure whether it is due to pre-amp or should i retain the preamp and add another power amp to biamp with 8000M.
chkl026,
I'm very sorry I'm not familiar with your loudspeakers' and hence I'm not sure how and what characters they possessed. Nevertheless, I googled your loudspeakers and oh my they are really beauties.

To reply to your question, I had followed the safest route that many reviewers had recommended. Typically, reviewers partnered Audiolab with loudspeakers from Mission, Monitor Audio, Whaferdale, PMC, Proac, Thiel, Triangle, Tannoy, etc. So when I decided on loudspeakers I followed along these speakers according to my budget. In my case, I chose Mission M66i, however, I once auditioned Monitor Audio at Acoustique Systems (if I spelled correctly), AmCorp Mall 2 years ago, I found the sound was very addictive with all the details ringing seductively when partnered with 8200MB. However, that setup was beyond my budget and priority at that time.

Mine sharing what is your source system?

As far as dull or not sufficient details is concerned, I found 8000Q offered more than 8000S but I set the gain at 3dB instead of 0dB. At 0dB, I don't like it at all, as if they were out of energy. I have 8200CD as a source and I think I have all the details that I need with Digital Filter set at Optimum Transient and dB reduced from 3 to 0. Previously with 8000S, I set 8200CD at 3dB. However, with Digital Filter set at Optimum Spectrum as suggested by HFC reviewers, I found it too much details to my liking.

So now I stick to 8000Q at Gain 3dB, 8200CD at 0dB with Optimum Transient and I found another audio window being opened wider similarly when I added 8000M to 8000S. Every nuances are there, the soundstage is wider and the details are sufficient to my liking. I biwired them with Audioquest FLX-SLip 14/4 and these cables gave me more details after I swapped them with Chord Carnival Silverscreen. My cables from 8000Q to 8000M is Chord Crimson Plus and now I read good reviews which said Atlas Element Integra is better than Chord Crimson. Due to its affordability, I might consider to purchase it for a try.

I've heard my friend's set up 8000Q + 4X8000M + Marantz CD67SE + Mission 782 last 10 years (and he still owned them) and it really blown me away. It has been my hifi objective to hunt these set up at budget prices. Although it has been a long journey over 5 years now, I don't mind at all as I'm very busy with my job and I find leisure when I spent few hours in a week with my setup.

I could go on but I guess the right combination from trial and error would have given the sound that you needed. I'm now on a new quest to find 2X8000M in Silver to complete biamping before I moved on to loudspeakers. I do hope my sharing will give you some lights to your "details" quest.

I have listened 751,752,753 and 782 partner with cyrus amps years ago.yes they were great until I met Linn Kan1,Linn Sara etc

Naim + Linn were the best combination in fihi industry had ever offered, wow great la, niama and linn was a great system, they rocked all the way from top to roots, had seemingly unlimited power on tap, and had good pace from top skies to keyhole simply a smart mr  digger, everything can be heard from the recording. Yummy

It depends on you bro! Some say the best combination should be Q+P, some say A+P, even some say S+P. It depends on your taste bro.

Google up some reviews on these combinations that may give you some ideas. I had never heard these combinations before coz I started with S+M then Q+M as an upgrade.

Good luck bro!

I am one ardent fan of Audiolab due to its dynamic sound output and also the Quad sound. All British influence. I have paired the following

1) TVC (pre) & Quad (need to turn volume very high due to low out-put

2) Carver pre & Quad- Good bass but lack definition. Mellow sounding

3) Audiolab 8000C pre & Quad 606.- Dynamic & good bass

4) Quad pre & Quad 606 - Lack definition & firm bass

5) Now back to Audiolab 8000Q (pre) & Quad 606 -Good definition and firm bass.

Audio signals fed out via Audioquest speaker cables to my TDL Studio 0.5M speakers

As long as British made (both pre & power), i reckon Audiolab will match pretty well with amps like Arcam/Quad/any British power amps if you can spend time to match and play.

What kind of Yamaha pre do you have in mind? I haven't tried any 8000M with others before. I am pairing them with 8000Q pre.

Hi! Everybody,

I've been using Audiolab power amps for almost 6 years....
My decent audiophiles sets are:

i) A pair of Audiolab 8000P (bi-amps) - black colour
ii) Audiolab 8000C - black colour
iii) Lenco L75
iv) Marantz CD63 SE
v) Promitheus Audio DAC
vi) EPOS ES11 / TDL - RTL3 / ELAC 105

Just to share that, these combinations still suit my entry level hearing...
