Can u use a pre amp with the cambridge audio 640a v2?
Hi guys,
as the topic states, is it possible to use a pre amp with the cambridge audio 640a v2? by doing this, will it improve sound quality by pairing the CA 640A v2 with a tube amp?
thanks in advance..

if it has inputs for an outboard preamp (will be marked preamp in), then you can. As for any sonic improvement, it all depends on how they match up ...

If u don't like the sound of your cambridge, u could be better off looking for another amp more suitable for your needs. I think it's a better bet. A more far out solution would be to mod your present amp, but that's a specialist job, unless u could diyed at your own time and expertise.

Re: Can u use a pre amp with the cambridge audio 640a v2?
There is no easy way to bypass the pre-amp and volume pot of the 640a since there is no direct input at the back to the power amp section.
We could perhaps crank the 640a's volume all the way to the max to sort of bypass it (not entirely). The input impedance is 47kohm so any pre-amp with output impedance no more than 470ohm should work. Passive pre's with 10k/50k/100k pots won't be ideal.
