Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist) Empty Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist)

Post by chenht Wed May 13, 2009 10:53 pm

My power amp (an Electrocompaniet) refused to power up this morning. I searched through this website and some forum member recommended Mr. Oh who is not far away from where I live. Called up the number given and a very polite and helful gentleman answered the phone. Drove to mr. Oh's house (he operates from home) at about 7pm and told him about my amp problem. The first thing he did was to to take out the fuse saying that it could be a blown fuse. True enough, my amp was back to life after the fuse was replaced.

When I asked him for the fee he would charge, he just smiled and told me it was FOC as he did not do much. I found it hard to believe as he actually carried the 25kg amp upstair to inspect.

I think Mr. Oh is a very honest person as he could have asked me to leave my amp there to inspect and tell me something else later on. He did not do that and replaced the fuse FOC.

I am not promoting Mr. Oh but i merely would like to share with forum members here that there is someone who we can count on if our gadget needs repair. You can contact Mr. Oh at 012-2060888.

Thank you very much Mr. Oh.

Yes, Mr Oh is an honest and nice guy who charge at reasonable rates. The thing that surprises me is he can check your Electrocompaniet amp on the spot and replace the fuse for you on the same day. Most of my gears need to be on the waiting list, about 1-2 weeks when I bring them to his house since he has many other amps from more important clients to repair.

Highly recommended.

Hi ryder,

Called him before and he was upfront with me. Said he had a lot on his table and would have to wait. Then there was another time when he said he could attend to the problem as there was nothing pressing from other clients. Depends on his work load at the time.

May be I was a sweet talker who managed to convince Mr. Oh to carry out an inspection on the spot Laughing

I am only kidding. I guess I went there at the right time when he was free.

Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist) Empty Re: Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist)

Post by garyhoward Wed Jul 15, 2009 3:10 pm

I would like to add my commendation of Mr. Oh. I have a Bose Spatial Control Receiver (c1980 vintage) which had intermittent problems of static and cut-off on one channel. I took it to Atlas and after pulling it apart they told me there was nothing they could do and it was 'beyond repair'. Through this website I found the names of several audio repairers. I contacted several of them. Some were not interested at all when I mentioned 'Bose', others were overly keen (also a worry).

I approached Mr. Oh and after talking with him I felt confident that if anyone could fix it he could. It took a while but I did not want to rush him. His house is full of audio equipment of all makes and vintage. He has done an excellent job and my reciever is once again performing in tip-top condition. His attention to detail was beyond what was required and his rates are really reasonable. He told me it was his first Bose receiver and he was glad of the learning experience. The man loves his work.

I was ready to dump my beloved old receiver but now I have it back with a new lease of life. Thanks to Mr. Oh. Job well done.

Sent two equipment to him for repairs, when all others were saying parts not available.

He repaired it without a hitch.

The passion is what counts first and the "$$$" is next and thats the reason why he is able revive lots of HiFi gear that all others say "no" too or screws up the repair.

Yes, Mr Oh is a very nice, friendly and honest person. I only contacted him by phone and bought 2 sets of cd players tray gears from him 2 months ago. He had also taught me the correct way to replace those tray gears.
Now my two 13 year-old cd players have new life, thanks very much to Mr Oh.
It is great to have such a nice repair master in malaysia. Thank you very much, Mr Oh and best regards.

Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist) Empty Re: Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist)

Post by arremie Thu Jun 03, 2010 1:11 pm

Just found this thread. Would like to offer gratitude to Mr. Oh also for upgrading my el-cheapo China made tube amp at a very very reasonable price. Now the amp sounded like triple it's original price and by the compliment I got by my visitors, the upgrade translate into money wisely spent.

The good thing is he didn't recommend me to upgrade to over price parts unlike some others. Instead he asked me to use parts which he think will give the most improvement relative to the price of my tube amp.

On personal level, he's a very friendly and down to earth type and makes any dealing with him such a pleasant experience. Highly recommended!

My gratitude too for Mr Oh for fixing my Simaudio CDP and a PSB subwoofer. Have a SS power amp which may need his TLC later since shipping it overseas may cost even more. . What more can I say for a man who can fix/fixing the likes of Goldmund and Wadias yet be humble with his opinions plus his repairs didn't cost a bomb. His house is like a proverbial candystore or eye candy for hifi fetish like me Very Happy.

Thank you Mr Oh...

Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist) Empty Re: Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist)

Post by ryder Fri Jun 04, 2010 10:39 am

Hi Jameschewmt,

I have called Mr Oh to clarify on the matter since he is a close friend of mine. Your post is misleading as when people read it they will assume your CD player is not working after being repaired by Mr Oh. He has clarified that the intermittent signs of the player not producing any sound are due to the clock that is not synchronised. This issue is inherent in the Electrocompaniet EC1 players as well. If there is no sound from the player, just turn hte player off and switch it on again and the player will play as normal. To avoid this problem, the player can be left on standby mode at all times.

By the way, the player was repaired about 2 years ago and it is until now the problem is highlighted here which seems rather peculiar.

Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist) Empty Re: Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist)

Post by Classe Fri Jun 04, 2010 12:09 pm

Mr Oh is very good.  I know him about 10 years and he has been successful in repairing all my equipments. And tells me beforehand if any equipment is beyond repairs. Recently, he restored a broken Chord preamp which was long written off for my friend.

I am puzzled about the unfortunate situation of jameschewht. I asked him  about this post and he gave me a short history of the problem. CDP are rather like computers and you have to be more specific whether you are referring to the old problem or a new problem since it affects someone's livelihood. The post hurt Mr Oh so much that he is having a second thought about repairing for end users. This is definitely not good for most of us.

Perhaps, if the post was misleading an apology would be appropriate. I wouldn't want to lose the only known professional capable of repairing our Hifi in Klang Valley, if not the whole of Malaysia.

I was teasing him just yesterday about his ability to repair a WWII CD player found buried in my backyard. Wonder if his mood will be the same for end users now on.

I believe many of us benefited from Mr Oh's expertise in repairing our equipment with TLC and fair price, not to mention the occasional free advice dishes out by him.

Having so many ppl posting their gratitude in this thread is testimony to his good work done for the hifi community.

He shouldnt throw a blanket refusal to the end users as a result of one dissatisfied customer. Instead, he should politely refuse to entertain the person and not punish all the grateful end users who have overtly expressed their gratitude in this thread.

I am also a beneficiary of his good work.

Keep it up, Mr Oh. Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist) Icon_cheers

Yes but truthfully and fairly as it involves someones rice bowl. And it affects me if he refuses to deal with end users. Since you have obtained valuable advice from another Pro why haven't you got your CDP fixed? IS Mr Oh to be blamed?

In fact, Mr Oh surely would reply to threads if he wasn't screwing around all the time with his electric screwdriver repairing equips. Very Happy Very Happy

jameschewmt wrote:Wonder why a guy openly critizise Mr oh n also mr Jude on repair works on his equipment on this forum and it fall on deaf ears ???? Only MR JUDE make a reply.
As mentioned in some of the responses here, Mr Oh is a busy man. Not only he doesn't have time to respond to posts over here but he doesn't have interest to reply to criticisms which will fuel more unnecessary debates. It is inevitable that one bad apple will crop up at one point or another. Anyway he will have his supporters and sidekicks that will respond on his behalf as seen over here, so it doesn't matter anyway.

Since your criticism does not fall on deaf ears in Mr Jude, at least you have another reliable source to send your faulty equipment to.

Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist) Empty Re: Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist)

Mr Oh is a good man and friend. I have known him over twenty years since his corporate years.

He hates to repair equipment which has been under open surgery by other unskilled repairman which ofter mess up the equipment and change it's sound.

He is just like any man and got his faults too. Do not expect him to do miracles in hopeless situations although he did come thru many times.

He did mention many times he is fed up with unreasonable remarks and request. I hope he will still serve the hifi community for a long time and not only to the dealers. Then you guys will pay thru the nose due to high markups by dealers.

So guys, pls give him the support and whoever is unreasonable, pls do yr part. Yr remarks do affect the hifi community.

Be reasonable.

Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist) Empty Re: Thank You Mr. Oh (Hi Fi Repair Specialist)

VS126 hits the nail on the head there. There have been several occassions whereby equipment that got screwed up by other repairmen were sent to Mr Oh to get it repaired for the 2nd consecutive time. There are many other unreported incidents that don't get published on the forums out of courtesy, and I am little saddened that an experienced, honest and good man in Mr Oh gets negative treatment that may have come unwarranted. He has successfully repaired the critic's CD player and it just that the player doesn't perform as usual due to design issues that are inherent in the player itself.

To Mr Oh - I hope you don't get discouraged by some of these remarks and carry on with your excellent job as usual. I am sure you realise that most of us who have sent our equipment to you have acknowledged you as an admirable, honest and ethical gentleman. Keep up with your good work.

Ditto to the detractors(not referring to anyone in particular) -please do your part as well as your negative comments that may have some agenda behind would affect the good hifi community.

Just like i can say AUDIOMATIC is the best HIFI SHOP in the universe - cheapo hifi no match - how would other shops feel ???????

Glad you found another repairer to yr liking. I wld be wary if he specialises in guitar or stage amp....which are considered less refined, no matter how big heavystuff they are.

Almost any technicians can do the job IMO.

I wld never send my CDP or amps to Woh Fatt or Bently for repairs.
They are specialist in guitar/stage amps...no matter how big.

Maybe yr Jude is also good in high end systems.

Mr. Oh is not a contractor. He is from E&E engineering background. He left his full-time job to do what he loves doing right now although he seems to be complaining that he has too much in his hands and hardly have time to take his lunch nowadays. Maybe he should consider passing on some of the workload to Mr Jude so that he can have a proper meal sometime. :-)
