6 kaki from kuching have a
fun time comparing these dac combinations on 9th july.
These are the comninations :

1) Mac mini +Zodiac Gold DAC, 2)
Bryston Bda 1 Dac and BDP 1 digital media player 3) CEC TL 1
+Audionote 3.1 plus DAC combinations

These are my impressions and should not
be construed as gospel truth !

The front end consist of apogee duetta,
Antique Sound lab monoblock amp, Aestherix pre

With red book CD and vocal, CEC
/Audionote combination wins the vote !. Most comment that it is more
human and vinyl like and do not mind the slight loss of high
information.

Overall the other 2 combinations excel
in deep tight bass, deep and wide soundstage and extended realistic
high frequency. Zodiac and mac mini has a slightly more forward mid.
The Bryston is sliglty more relaxed and liquid. This is only realised
with hi rez files.

Bryston BDP 1 digital media player and
Zodiac gold Dac brings out the best of both components.

We also have a short period of time
with Linn Sondek LP12 with lingo power supply, Basic tonearm with
Denon 103 cartridge playing Chai qing and it is unanimous that this
is the most enjoyable combination . The oldest technology is the most
enjoyable!

I hope my friends will join and give their views

Is the Zodiac powered by the standard SMPS or the Voltikus?

Hi tycham,
I think it is standard power supply for the Zodiac .
I have the impression that absolute resolution is not necessary for listerning pleasure.

Hi Dr Wong,

Too bad I couldn't join you, it must have been fun. We can do another Dac shoot out next time after the arrival of Ear Acute III cdp/dac.
Regards.

Apogee Duetta is a very nice speaker. I have auditioned it before and the transparency is outstanding. I was very surprised by its ability to churn out quality bass too. It was driven by a pair of legendary US ss mono amp.

Although careful placement is needed, it is very rewarding when the correct placement is identified.
