With HEARING VOICES, released 25 years after IN SEARCH OF THE TURTLE'S NAVEL, William Ackerman finally recorded an album with vocal accompaniments (he had previously recorded a single track with vocals on 1998's SOUND OF WIND DRIVEN RAIN). The vocal variety here is ambitious: a slew of performers sing in Gaelic, Arabic, Luganda, Hebrew, Italian, Hindi, and English.
But more often than not, the voices operate as additional instruments, and the words act as ethereal sounds that enhance the sparseness of Ackerman's guitar, rather than distracting with their meanings. On two duets with Jaya Lakshmi, "Briars Above the Well" and "As Stars Fell," her Hindi and Sanskrit vocals are rendered in a down-home, country girl meter, blurring genres in a most enchanting fashion.
