McIntosh ... do you have one or more?

Post by bassraptor on Mon Aug 10, 2009 9:28 pm

Well, I thought I'd start one ... notice the spelling? It ain't Macintosh the tech guys but McIntosh Labs. Tell us about your McIntosh experiences and gear. I'm a newbie Mc owner, but I've lusted over Mc gear for many years. More later ...

I have an old integrated mc amp the MA6200.

Sounds very sweet and musical and goes very well with the P3 TT.

It's a keeper.

Back in the late 1980s I was using a Macintosh SE/30 and then in the 1990s I got me a Mac Classic, followed by a Mac LC. The Mac LC was my first Mac with colour. I loved working with Macs and hated Microsoft but somehow I left the Mac world and i'm a PC user today. After such a long absence I'm thinking of getting the Mac Mini and putting it in the HSBC 0% installment plan.

As for the McIntosah amplifiers, sorry no experience. But I guess the closest I came to owning a McIntosh was my vintage Cary Audio SLM70. These were 70 Watt monoblocks. I still miss the sound but i've since tweaked my Krell to sound like them.

Cheers! Very Happy

My Rega P3 has the Elys2 MM cart hooked occasionally to the Rega Fono but most times to the MA6200 phono stage.

The MA6200 phono stage somehow does a warmer sound but that's just me.

bimmerman: after a while, it stops being funny, the Mac and Mc jokes, especially after my opening post comment ... incidentally, I read somewhere that Macintosh used the name with permission from McIntosh. google it, it'll be there somewhere. Smile

Rob, you should trade in the Elys 2 for the Exact .... big jump in performance, from my experience. Yes,your MA6200 shud sound better ... the Rega Fono is a budget phono stage, after all - I would sell it, since the amp already has one.

actually, azri, which is better - valve or solid-state - is just a matter of opinion, very subjective matter.

how much did you get the car audio mc for?

Post by azri on Tue Aug 11, 2009 6:31 pm

cheapo, only au170, at that time ozs has lots of money
so they dont bother this mc on display

heres some stories about it

The premium McIntosh entertainment system consists of a head unit, a speaker amplifier, two tweeters, four mid-range speakers, and a subwoofer.

The speaker amplifier is located below the front passenger's seat and the subwoofer at the rear shelf trim.

The output power handled by each of the four channels is 24W and the subwoofer is 60W. The total harmonic distortion of the system is as low as 0.05% - comparable to that of high-class home-use audio systems.

Speakers

Type,Diameter, Number
Front tweeter, 20mm, 2
Front mid-range, 160mm, 2
Rear mid-range, 160mm, 2
Woofer (oval-shaped), 152mm x 229mm, 1

McIntosh engineers spent 12 months in Japan to customize their legendary sound systems for Liberty B4 and helped assist FHI technicians with the interior design of the car.

The head unit has a 2DIN AM/FM tuner, single CD and cassette controls.

Established in the U.S.A. in 1946, McIntosh is regarded as one of the world's premium car audio systems.

The Liberty B4 system features a high performance digital to analogue (D/A) converter with premium 20-bit Burr-Brown chips.

The cassette function has ultra-stable transport with Dolby B noise reduction.

The high sensitivity AM/FM radio has two antennas with six AM and 12 FM pre-set channels.

The system includes McIntosh's proprietary Power Guard technology, for low distortion at high sound levels.

It has a six-band, four-channel parametric equalizer, tuned specifically for Liberty B4.

The system includes a 20mm high frequency super tweeter. It has soft-dome construction, for low distortion and high-power handling.

The front and rear speakers feature a two-way design, with the tweeter integrated into the woofer frame. They include a 165mm polypropylene cone woofer and the 20mm high frequency super tweeter.

The subwoofer is 152 x 228mm and features low distortion/high power (LD/HP). LD/HP technology increases output by reducing induction loss and lowers distortion by stabilizing the magnetic field.

The entire system only weighs about 10 kilograms.

*im pretty sure i have a friend who manage to get the single din version

IIRC McIntosh started car audio after Clarion of Japan bought them over in the early 90s.

I actually started in 1983 with an Apple II+. One of those pirated / unlicensed clones from Taiwan actually. It had 64KB of RAM, and a dual floppy 5.25" drive.
Man, having 64KB with a dual floppy drive was like the king of of home PCs. Finally decommissioned it in 1989. Ok, so it wasn't a Mac, but it was a Mac predecessor Wink

It was many many years later, about 19 years later that I finally came full circle and got myself a MacbookPro.

Wait hang on .... Opps ! This thread is for McIntosh !!! Got carried away with the Macintosh instead !

My bad... Wink

Hmmmm... McIntosh huh? ... i think i saw some of them at "Brother Peter Auto Accessory" before.... hahaha!

hahaha ok ok ... we talk "McIntosh" here. Actually didnt see the middle postings between u and beemerman.

Spoiler:
No more MACintosh (aka Apple , Steve Jobs, iPod, iPhone blah blah blah).

Actually, the name choices are very interetesting, if u read any of the steve jobs unofficial biographies. Apple did consider that the Mc name was already taken by an audio HW maker, so Steve Jobs in all his brilliance, decide to add the "a" in Mc to make it a Mac.

But the Apple namesake had the inspiration source, which is after this type of Apple (fruit) breed that is planted in Washington state.

Just like some types of wine: Merlot, Chardonnay .... etc etc.

Please google "triode mode" and you may have your answers.
Its like asking what a half race camshaft for?..
Without understanding the workings of a tube amplifier, a proper answer may be lengthy, unless someone here have the time to explain it in full.

I've owned some Mc productions, 2505, 2205, MA7000, C29, C34, C22. All of them are not the best sound I've ever heard that I made pair to JBL 4344 for a long time ago. I'm so sorry, but my ear is not yours, maybe. The only Mc I've taken is MCD 7007.

The complete system I like very much still now: Onkyo Scepter 10, M5/C5 exclusive, 7007, R3 Sony. This system make me happy.

I don't have one but...

Just got off a family trip to Jakarta, the weather sucks but my visit to a hi fi shop was one of those 'hi fi moments'. There's a shop smack in Grand Indonesia humunggus mall with McIntosh MC2KW power amplifier driving a pair of JBL Everest. Spent about an hour or so listening to them:

What can I say, effortless power and all the superlatives you can imagine of.. and to top off the guys at the shop are excellent and friendly... they offered to have a listen to the system without even me asking them.. that's Service with a capital S.. and something our fellow hi fi retailer here should get up to speed to, service wise..

If you're in Jakarta , drop by de Sound (unit EM2-12A-12B-15) at the Grand Indonesia mall, not promoting them but at least can enjoy these while you're there and the specs at http://www.mcintoshlabs.com/products/mcintosh-mc2kw-2000-watt-reference-power-amplifier.asp

while your better half does the shopping or window shopping cheers

There's another shop with Krell FPB driving SF Stradivari Homage but didn't have time to have a listen... again, excellent service and friendly staff.

By the way, tuananh, while in Ho Chin Minh city last June, I dropped by a hifi shop with Jadis JP800 driving a pair of Wilson Sophias... hmm.. heavenly..

I'am not million, and so, I know, I can not own any hi-end from Mc.
But, I knew the Mc sound, I felt the Mc sound and I was be a fan Mc for some years ago. However, if you ask me "How do you do when you were million?", I please to answer "I'll find Pioneer Exclusive, I can like Mc, but I love Exclusive".

Dear!

The only Mc I've got - taken till now is MCD 7007, this is a CDplayer, I think, good for me. I've got 201 15 months ago, but, I'm sorry, the 201 did not make a better sound than 7007 if playing cd. And, how many SACD do you own, how many CD you own? I bet, CD, so do I! The 201 was be loaned from my friend, said she that "I am ready to change 201, or even 301 to Sony R1 Transport/Dac". I believed!

If you like or love Mc, I think, normally, because you're the one, not me! So, try to guess how many $ when I bough 7007? Only 800$, in audiogon. You may buy some cheaper than you think in audiogon. Let I show you an example:

Mcintosh preamplifier C34v .

The seller had not 0 feedback, the item was in 3 re-post, 8 days in last post with 256 views. You want to buy a good item from 0 feedback seller, should'n you? I bet, you do not want. But, I can, please, think a simple : You're in audiogon, insurrance from PayPal, not in ebay. 599$ obo, you can make an offer ~550$. It's cheap for the good item, good Mc preamplifier - C34v.

McIntosh experience? Hmm, I'm not well in English, really, I'm bad Very Happy so, I must write something into paper, translate to English, and I'll send as soon as possible.

The only thing I can write now: Even 4344, I did not like its bass, so heavily, it's ascomplished to Metal Rock rather than Jazz pop vocal. The sound stage, of course, is open, however, I did not like. It-4344's sound stage could not made me feel "music" (not sound) rather than Onkyo Scepter 10. Very Happy

Yeap! The green color light, very beautiful, switch off the house's light, switch on Mc power, you'll feel the interesting music, even you do not press "Play" in CD

So do I, I like the green color in Mc!

since upgrading r u still keeping ur Odyssey combo... Very Happy

Fizi, I started this thread in 2009, Aug, when I was using a McIntosh pre-power combi! Six months ago, I got the Odyssey pre-power and sold off the Mc amps. So it's all Odyssey now ....

Wow bro, didn't realised the thread was that long... does it mean the Odysseys are better that McI, considering this 'upgrade' from a reviewer Question Question

I loved the McIntosh amps ... but the Odyssey amps have taken my Maggies further in performance than I've ever heard. Even more than Krells I've owned. Does that make the Odysseys "better" than both the Mc and Krell? I hate to use that word without context. In my system, the Odysseys work with "better" synergy, but in another, the Mcs may work "better" ... so there ...

Hey, if i could get my hands on a KSA-300S, I would still be interested. Over the past 20 years, it's one of my more memorable hi-fi possessions!

i'm using the tempest 2 pre, solid-state with phono stage. power is the khartago extreme se. the tube pre, candela, is a line stage and more expensive. yeah. i'm not surprised they work well with audio physics. for me, greatest value amps i've ever bought.
