I tried a few configurations over the weekend and found that this construction is best used as a bass trap. For any of you who needs such treatment, will let you have it all at RM80.

Not the best looking bass trap.

Crude looking but if it does the job for the cost of peanuts .....

You must have consumed quite a number of omelets and 1/2 boiled eggs for breakfast to have collected that many egg trays. Watch the cholesterol.

Any audition available ?

These are new cartons which I got directly from a dealer. I must ay it works like any other bass trap without expensive cost. Looks cool with right lighting. Since I got quite a few calls without any takers yet, will further drop the price to RM60 for all. First come first served. Thanks ya!

Generic Diffuser and Bass Trap Empty Re: Generic Diffuser and Bass Trap

Salutations, greetings and yabba dabba do dudes.

Not to burst your bubble or rain on anyone's parade, but that's a lot of treated material to have in a small hifi room that we typically spend hours in. And you will be breathing in chemicals that will leach into the air from the egg shell material. Some of these chemicals are chlorine based poisons for the human body and DNA. I know as i am doing work with human DNA.

So play it safe and check the chemical contents of any large quantities of artificial material you have lying around, eg vynyl flooring is very bad for health.

Cheers.

Generic Diffuser and Bass Trap Empty Bass Trap (Retract)

Post by edddddy21 Tue Sep 18, 2012 2:29 pm

Truely appreciate the info on this. I wasn't aware of the chemicals in the egg cartons. As such, I am retracting this sale immedietly. The cartons are going into the trash this evening.

Well, hope to read some good suggestions in making DIY diffusers and bass traps in the other forum.

Thanks!

Generic Diffuser and Bass Trap Empty Re: Generic Diffuser and Bass Trap

Don't trash it yet.

Bal just advised that you check out what materials these egg trays are made of.

You won't fall sick with just minimal exposure..... maybe with long term exposure. But google to find out more. Otherwise all your effort is wasted.
Found this om wikipedia,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg_carton

Out of curiosity, where did you find the info to build this unique "bass trap"? Or was it your own DIY creation?

Generic Diffuser and Bass Trap Empty Re: Generic Diffuser and Bass Trap

Sph has got a point... pulp has chlorine and hydrogen peroxide residues in it. (anything made of pulp, including good ol newspapers). And these chemicals will leach into the air around us. But if the exposure is minimal, and you have good detoxification genes, you will probably get by. But if you are like me, and your detox genes suck, then that may explain why i would fall asleep in my old hifi room that had the walls plastered with these pulp made egg cartons. And i thought it was listening fatigue due to poor system!!!

I think one or two egg cartons in a well ventilated room should be ok (again depending on your detox genes, if you want to find out, DNA profiling is available in Kl, i do this work. contact me.). But too many egg cartons and you get too much of these chemicals silently sneaking out of the cartons in to the surrounding air... how many of us listen with the room doors and windows closed, for hours on end hands up? (my hand is going up now too..) and in the air con? If you feel drowsy and dopey and slow thinking in such a situation then you need to consider this information.

Chlorine and hydrogen peroxide residues ..... not good news.
As good bad as having stacks of old newspaper in your audio room.

Generic Diffuser and Bass Trap Empty Bass Trap

Post by edddddy21 Tue Sep 18, 2012 10:16 pm

Interesting enough, I'm not going to take any risks or transfer the risks to other hifi members knowing that there is a chance to get sick after long hours of exposure to chemical hazards. These cartons are now in the recycle bin waiting to be picked up in the morning.
I came out with this idea after thinking of a diffuser design that does not require mounting on to the wall. Turns out it works best as a bass diffuser instead. That's the fun of DIY Very Happy
