To many of us who are hopelessly caught up in the cause of jazz as a new, authentic, slef-sufficient, self-perpetuating contribution to the world's great music, the year 1960 went down in musical history as the year in which John Coltrane began to find himself as one of the incontestables of jazz.

In the present album, Coltrane is shown in a new guise: that of co-leader, sharing time, ideas and musical experiences with a musician as brilliantly lyrical, as endlessly free-flowing as is he himself. A whole generation of vibes players has attempted to model itself upon Jackson's genius (without, so far, a hint of success) and attention should be called here, less to Bags' greatness than tot he fine, rewarding experience of these two musicians working together to build a cohesive whole.

The excellent and much recorded pianist, Hank Jones, the lyric Paul Chambers and the impeccable but endlessly inventive Connie Kay perform beautifully. Here are men who have been so long at the very top of the jazz heap that they have no need to prove anything to their audience - except that they are an essential and inevitable part of the proceedings.
