Amplifier's Power Empty Amplifier's Power

Post by STC Fri Feb 14, 2014 12:58 pm

Recently, I calculated the actual power of the amplifier to drive my 86dB speakers at the average volume of 85dB level.  The measurements revealed  that It looks like we can easily drive the amplifiers into clipping at the average level of 85dB that we listen to. 85dB is just loud enough. More often,  the average loudness for loud music with oomph is usually around 90dB. Here are the readings:-

In a short track of 1 minute that I measured, the lowest level was 65.56dB and the loudest 98.47dB. That is about 32dB dynamic range. The Amp power required for an average 85dB level at 2.5meter is just 5 Watt. At the highest peak of 98.47dB, my speakers required 110W which my 250W/channel Amp delivered without a sweat. Working on average values;  at 85dB all that is required of an amplifier is 5W and for the average peak of 92.47dB is just about 27W. It looks like most amp should able to drive Harbeth (manufacturer recommended minimum specs is 25W amplifier).

In reality, there were about 38 occasions of 0.1s transient exceeding 95dB. Four of them at the highest level of 98.47dB where the actual power needed was 110W.  At this level, even a 100W amplifier is bound to clip. However, the loudest level is for a very short time and most likely we wouldn’t notice it unless you are familiar with the track. Some may even attribute it to the amplifiers’ characteristics.

Now at 90dB of average loudness level, the highest peak will be 103.47dB. The power that is required to drive the speakers at the peak is 349W !!! . That number is something beyond my 250W/c. I am not even sure if Harbeth with it 150W program can survive for long under this loudness.

Anyone with busted drivers want to share details about your speakers sensitivity and amplifiers powers?

Regards.
