Re: LS3/5A speakers kaki gather here!
Vocals are really good. Quite surprising actually considering its size & appearance. As mentioned in my other post, no bottom. I was using my 80W OTL with autoformer to bump up the impedance.
My friend says QUAD II is a perfect match with the LS3/5a. Others say 8W 300B SET types give good sound.
I personally think any audiophile worth their salt should keep a pair for collection. My personal opinion only ok

Joe Ling

If one desires more bass, the Spendor series of monitor speakers are worth considering. I.e. Spendor SP2 or even Spendor SP1. The 'Spen' in Spendor is Spencer Hughes whom if I remember correctly was one of the BBC engineers who designed the LS3/5A. I had a pair of SP2/2s for a very long time and found that only ribbons could provide a worthy challenge to its midrange.

BTW, I assume every fan of the LS3/5A knows about the legendary Jo Ki and his LS3/5A club.

When LS3/5a pops up in my mind, all I can think of is the vocal.

Wabun,
You should listen it yourself to clear your curiosity. It is hard to tell by words. I believe you can find LS3/5A user stays nearby you although you have not met her/him yet.

As suggested by member, you may drive down to Klang Valley. I believe there are members using LS3/5A and more than happy to serve you. Besides, you may visit Jo Ki, the LS3/5A master who plays LS3/5A + Subs. Worth your visit.
You may also drive up to K. Kangsar. LS3/5A friends should welcome you.
I can provide you contacts.
Or, one hour further south down from KL, you are welcome to visit me but it could be too far for you.

We have done the Rogers 11ohm vs Ho's LS35A vs Harbeth HL-P3 but all driven with Quad vintage solid state (33+303 after recpas) & played with DIY sub-woofer... we all came out dizzy drawing our own conclusion.... lol....owner of the Ho's concluded his is the best,.. I liked the P3 then....... but another must listen,..IMHO is Quad ESL-57.... opps.. a bit off-topic.... but really,... anyone liking the character off LS35A should take a listen to Quad ESL-57....

I believe visiting you would be more fruitful and worthwhile. Heard you have a few pairs of LS 3 5As. Can have a listen to the ESL 57 somemore.
BTW, that young chap did told me his Leak was bought from the UK, self-collected. Didn't know where he got his Chartwell though. Not surprising since all my vintage Quads are all bought from the UK but sellers agreed to post them here. If not i myself would have to self-collect too.
Didn't listen long enough to be able to judge the sound, but I thought the vocal richer with more body. And the sound is very refine. This is the second pair I had heard other than the Roger 60th Anniversary Edition at the dealer.

Re: LS3/5A speakers kaki gather here!
I don't believe Jo Ki openly invites everybody to go listen to his system. It's only via special invitation only. But he does make an effort to put up a demo room at every year's KLAVS. He msised this year due to work commitments but he did say he's committed for next year.

What a coincident!
Thanks for your invitation. Would be many moons before I can make it I am afraid. Would be nice to bask in the nostalgia of the 50s.

Re: LS3/5A speakers kaki gather here!
Hi all u serious LS3 5A users out there.
I have had an old Rogers 15 ohm model for many years now - most of that time it was not used with a 'proper amp'
The thing was given to me by an old friend who has since died, he used to work for Atlas sound Spore- perhaps he stole it I dont know! but it was never in great condition visually with dings and scratches that i must admit my kids and I have added to. Inspite of not having any serious amp for it i always loved its tone.
When i heard it driven by an old Leak clone i almost fainted.
Lately i use an active sub which is very nice and have got some better amps.
Surprisingly an old Cambridge tranny power amp A100 works nicely with it. Now it should be happy with a valve Sansui.
A very nice little speaker alright
