LUXMAN L114-A Vintage Amplifier
Luxman L-114A
Luxman is a brand name of Japanese Luxman, a company that produces a variety of high-end hi-fi products, such as turntables, amplifiers, receivers, tape decks, CD players and speakers. Luxman were primarily specialists in making vacuum tube amplifiers of the highest calibre. In most cases Luxman designed equipment combined the quality and warmth of vacuum tube sound with powerful electronics and often beautiful aesthetic designs.
Luxman’s reputation in the early 80s at the time when the L-114A (1981-1983) was manufactured has always been in the high end and often expensive hi-fi market. Luxman products were often seen as a product of perfectionist or elitist brand. In fact, the Luxman L-114A exuded exactly that, a mid-priced amplifier with the sound that often associated with higher priced amplifier.
This is a vintage amp that is worth the keep even at today’s standard, as it easily rivals the audio qualities of today’s higher price range amplifiers.
We have the opportunity to run some tests and play some cd tracks and found the amplifier to be delightful to listen to with its authority and sweetness. Music played through the amplifier has the clarity and pace that rendered complex music a sense of pace and clarity that often taxes today’s budget amplifiers. The sweetness of the high is a delight as we played rock music tracks and found the amplifier able to preserve the fast transient attack of the highs yet has a mellow quality that allows for non-fatiguing prolong listening.
The lows are equally impressive as the amplifier are able to command solid and deep bass passages with authority and pace, delivering punch to complex bass interchanges and excitement to listener. Often we found ourselves snapping our fingers along with the tunes as this amp proves to be very musical and often we neglect the technical aspects of the amplifier itself and pays attention only to the music delivery.
All in all, L-114A proves to be capable to go head to head with some of the mid-range amplifier of today’s technology. The ongoing price of US$400 at some online forum selling vintage amplifiers speaks volumes of a good piece of audio hardware that can be fun for collectors yet providing good quality hi-fi sound that lasts. - Audiophile experts
