Astro/HyppTV HD transmission and Aspect ratio
This is a question to about Astro/HyppTV HD transmission and Aspect ratio AND correct equipment settings. Please allow time for images to load or click the links directly.
I am surprised that no one complains about the mediocre picture quality transmitted by HyppTV and Astro. When Astro introduced HD few years ago, some of the old movies (which were not HD contents, in the first place) were broadcasted in the HD channels. The old movies picture ratio are usually 4:3. What Astro and HyppTV did was to blow up the image to fill the entire 16:9 TV. This results in distorted and poor picture quality. I did complaint to Astro and after much persuasion the problem seemed to be addressed though occasional it is still happening. But I just don’t watch them or switch to SD channel to watch the same movie. Talking to HyppTV was like talking to a wall and I eventually gave up and terminated the service.
What is Aspect Ratio? I hope these images would give a better picture because it seems that generally people prefer size over quality.

Look at the spherical shape on the left. That’s how a proper image should appear on the TV. But more often than not in channel 720 we are seeing the image like in the right screen.
Another example here.

Most of the non HD contents from Astro viewed on 60 in TV hardly fill one third of the TV screen size. I could do the necessary adjustment to cover the entire screen but at the expense of loss of sharpness or sliced image. I do not use Fit the Screen to prevent “fat” images.

The problem with Astro this time they claim that my settings were wrong. Going to Astro settings, nothing seems to happen if I adjust the display aspect ratio to 4:3 when in channel 720 or any other HD channels. I have even forced my AVR to downscale the so called HD transmission of channel 720 to as low as 480p but nothing is happening. I cannot get back the correct aspect ratio. Anyone here experiencing the same problem?
Thank you.

Re: Astro/HyppTV HD transmission and Aspect ratio
OK. This looks like one man's battle...
ASTRO finally admitted they are screening 4:3 in 16:9 format. They also claimed that all the contents were upgraded to HD but did not say how to correct the wrong aspect ratio. I guess they are telling me to accept the distorted shapes.
Any psychologist here who could share your thoughts on adverse cognitive effect due to wrong aspects on children?
