calling all marantz owner!!
my old marantz cd 50 has started to give a hick-ups (occasionally) during playback. when i stuff in a cd its easy to read, no hesitation, but during playback it does gives a skip, sometimes at early pb, sometimes in the middle & sometimes at the end of a playback. very rare, but without fail on every disc. does this means the lens are going kaput? or its the transport cdm4/19 motor weakening or laser pick up not having a smooth operation. i do have a very good cdm4/19 mechanism (from philips cdp) for spare but not sure to replace it or not. pls advice.

Re: calling all marantz owner!!
Make sure you take off the power cord from the wall plug. Dont leave it plugged, eventhough the switch is off.
I dont know about your marantz unit, but my CD63ki is rather easy to dismantle. Just make sure you know a thing or 2 about pulling flex(those connection wire that look like a piece of ribbon.) As some have lock down coupler, some not.
Happy DIY.

Good luck to you too - but do di static yourself and equipment by touching some metal parts before touching the mother board or transport . they are highly vulnerable to static charge.

Re: calling all marantz owner!!
most common cause is your cd is a little wrap , lens slightly misalight due to unexpected pressure upon cleaning the len or imitation disc. some of my chinese cds show NO DISC upon inserting .

Re: calling all marantz owner!!
hey guys.. i nearly ripped of my marantz & philips cd just to change the transport mechanism until a nice guy from france told me to do perform this procedure :
if you guys are having the same problem with your cdp that utilises cdm 4/19 do this before giving up the player. mine is working like before right now & mind you its almost 20 years old & still kicking!! yeah!! easy..
First, pull up the clamp arm, under you'll se a whithe plastic shell holding the clamp, this one being in contact with the main pressing arm via a steel ball. Clean that ball and both contact sides, you can try to add a tiny drop of very fluid oil.
I've saved an Arcam Alpha One Plus like this, with Thorens' TT oil as lube.
While you're at it check for the free movement of the laser arm, just the home position because of the flat cable. I did also put a very small touch of oil there.

cd 50 nos mod
i have just completed the NOS mod on my cd50 and it is more than worth the risk.the Player now sounds on Par with a marantz sa11s sacd player. this is truly a hot player.
the player has had a new analogue stage put in it , new caps, and will undergo a Clock transplant in the near future.
I also have a CD40 with the same DAC chip and board , but a new cdm 4/19 mechanism is needed as I sold it off to a friend. anyone with a cdm4/19 full mechanism I am willing to pay good$$ for it.
cheers

Re: calling all marantz owner!!
Azri,
I think it may worth more than that. Cd95 is limited edition. It's in champange gold colour n weighted 15kg compare to cd94mk2 at 12kg.
It peanut for cd94 or cd95 to beat sa11s1.
Chefsinc67,
beside cd95, I also own cd60. The nos mod really worth a try. But cd 94 is way above cd60.

This is an easy modification, just follow what our friend fikas of lampizator fame has to say.
And yes it is well worth the effort, takes a humble cd player to limits I never thought possible for a 20+ year old player.
Go for it and u will not be dissapointed

Re: calling all marantz owner!!
Latest update is I have sourced 2 cdm 4/19 from Germany and tray wheels from hong kong. Needed a motor but pulled one out of an old DVD player and it works.
I can see a full weekend of modification coming up in anticipation of all the other parts arriving. These modded 20 year old players are fantastic and well worth the effort

Re: calling all marantz owner!!
I have Marantz CD6003. Based on spec, it has Cirrus Logic CS4398 24Bit/192khz DAC on Delta Sigma Architecture. Well, I could understand bit and khz but I don't know how good is Cirrus Logic CS4398 and Delta Sigma Architecture. I browse in the net, I found some technical data about them which I don't understand. So far, I'm very pleased with its sound qualities but is there anymore juices that I can extract from the CD6003?
Hence, come to the question whether I should add External DAC like Cambridge DACMagic, Arcam rDAC, etc to gain better sonic qualities from CD6003 or I should leave CD6003 as it is. I do notice DACMagic has upsampling feature, would it enhance my CD6003 or is it just a gimmick? In addition, mostly I listened to compress files such as MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, etc via CD6003.
Appreciate all Sifus advises. Thanks.

Re: calling all marantz owner!!
I always think whatever mods, there's only so much one can do to extract more juice (like you say so). Eventhough anyone can say with much expense and mods it'll give a good run for the money to a high end CDP or transport but it stays there with only so much and will lag behind a good heavy build CD transport with better electronics and perhaps heavier build CD mechanism. IMHO, These budget marantz have plasticky cd mechanisms and loader, that'll be no match for better build ones like those found in the Wadia or others built like a tank. Perhaps you should be looking into those heavy build transport and external DAC if you find your Marantz lacking. These higher end machines may offer qualities of wider soundstage, airier ambience and space. Other SQ and tonal qualities, musicality is subjective depending on component match.

Re: calling all marantz owner!!
Thanks cmboy for the right perspectives and advises. I do note those heavy build transport with better electronics will definitely outshine the Marantz. However, the challenge here is that I can't afford those shining machines that I do dream to own one day. In meantime, I had to stick around with small budget in the range of RM1K-2K per component.
Is there any used high end machines that can play compressed and uncompressed files in the given budget that you can suggest to me? Thanks.

Hi Khlim,
Is it the 67 or 63 series of CDP u have? I think majority of them suffering the same fate. The plastic gear might have been broken of few tooths. So the moment like coming out fast and slow interim.
Guess all the Malaysia made transport mechanism might have incompatible grease used for the gearing...
Anyway, dont worry Mr. Oh that is highly recommended in this website can easily replace the necessary component for you. I've mine done by him.

Hi Khlim,
It is not the tray gear that's rosak. It is most like the ring gear that in direct contact with the tray that's rosak. Mr. Oh will change to a new gear and belt also.

Wow mate !!! ... Mr Oh delivers Downunder... now that's what I call Service with a capital 'S' ...
Khlim,
I think you should consider Mr Oh as he has, to date (and from people I knew and those I recommended Mr Oh to) fixed numerous cd-tray or amps problems. My Simaudio lens and tray, which has recently had a new-found owner, was fixed plus with better motor and tray from Japan. I was surprised that the original motor was from China even though it was circa 2004-2005 plus proudly displaying 'Fabrique au Canada per Simaudio Ltee' on it's backside..
The best part is the whole service was at a very reasonable charge and comes with smile (and plus some good advice/tips on hi fi if you care to ask him)...
Marantz has always been almost 'bread n butter' aka 'safe' cdp for me spinning the silver discs through many years. Starting with CD 54 (or CD52, not sure actual model no) in the mid eighties, CD 75, late 80's early 90's (these two were models from Downunder, not sure their comparable models here) to the CD 65SE from Woo Kee Hong from the mid-90's. Current in my 'stable' (albeit not seeing much spinning these days) both the SA7001 KI (for stereo) and DV7001 (MC).
Never quite afford the higher ends like CD 94 in the eighties or the current 'Mutiara' (KI Pearl) ones .. but they have been good to me... especially the CD75 which came along with a nice leggy blond one summer downunder... ahhh that's another story
..
my two sens..

I may misunderstood what you're trying to say here but I suppose you'd have to expect a few days and IMHO looking at the workload Mr Oh had so far (this is the 'see with your own eyes' kind of thing), a quick rush may be out of question. Perhaps you can make some arrangements with some friends/relatives or doing it as a holiday trip to KL..
Well mate, all of us here can only suggest but you make your own decision. Anyway, good luck
Cheers,
zb

Re: calling all marantz owner!!
often it comes with ridiculous price plus im looking for something different so i end up with naim cd 3 (cheaper but good value). Unless if its philips LHH 1000 then its something for me to consider. but its hard to get 240v version for this, normally its US/Japan version.. demm!
