May I know what you mean of New Roger LS3/5a?

If the 3/5a is the old version (vintage), then one very importance factor you must understand when you comparing these two. The 5 is fairly big compared to 3/5a. The differnces in overal sound presentation is fairly huge.

I suggest you listen both 1st.

Btw, may I know what do you mean "new" rogers ls3/5a? The latest rogers ls3/5a is not the vintage BBC 3/5a. Beside the model name, they are Orange and Apple. Hope you get what I mean... ---------- Icon_razz

If u only listen to vocals & light instruments, then can consider the Rogers (assuming the new is the same as old ---------- Icon_neutral ) They are quite nice with vocals really. However, no bottom at all.

The Harbeth I may have heard years ago but cannot recall how they sounded. Only recalled the lady's non stop chatter about how good the Harbeth are.

I'd beg to differ strongly...
the LS3/5a is only good for use in a space-constrained environment.

In all other aspects, the SHL5 is totally superior to the LS3/5a, only that the Harbeths will need space to "live and breathe" properly.

C'mon, lets be honest here ... LS3/5a against a SHL5 ?
Whatever the LS3/5a does in terms of tonality, the SHL5 can do. But the SHL5 will give so much more reach in terms of the bass extension, treble dispersion and dynamic range that the LS3/5a just cannot reach into such domains.

Given that both are in the same price range ....
One is paying more for "prestige and cult" personality, while for the other, you're paying more for honest realworld performance capabilities.
Let the buyer choose where he/she wants to spend the money on. Smile

I think I've found my answer, If I want "prestige and cult" I'll rather get a good pair of vintage ls3/5a. And spend the extra money for a vintage Nait 1 Very Happy Very Happy[/quote]

You should find the answer by listening yourself. To drive LS3/5A, tube amp is always prefered. LS3/5A can still excel in relatvely sizable room. IMO, it has sufficient high frequency extension and middle low frequnecy (do not expect ultra low from 4" driver). Friend of mine "complaint" about bassy when we tested LS3/5A in his room. It was observed that its high frequency extension was not any less than his little planer. It is still mentioned/ as reference from time to time, whether you like it or not.

Regards.

Yes, most tube amps love the LS3/5a , mainly because of the ls3/5a's having higher impedances than most regular speakers. It's an easy load for tube amps.

Which goes back to the same thing. It will deliver that nice fancy cup of tone (call it premium cappuccino ), but it will be missing all the other stuff like dynamics, bass extension, enveloping soundstaging and all the other nice sonic illusions one might expect from spending a pretty penny on their system.

Don't really know the price of the Ho. Was quoted SGD3999.00 for the Roger and it was the last pair. To date, they still claim it's the last pair.

Rightly so! It's the last pair that will never get sold!

Hi YWChg,
If your ls3/5a is the one in the ebay, then is worth consider if you really love its sound. Otherwise, a "new" recent release LS3/5a is really not worth the price of SHL5. The good LS3/5a stil the vintage but not new vers, even kef piano gloss 3/5a.

If your listening envir is only suit small speaker, better and cheaper still, Harbeth P3ESR. But, due to its size, it still do not sing as big or ease as the 5 when play loud. The 5 will give fuller and more depth and density with larger scale.

For 15 ohm, the early version is preferable. This pair is late version with white belly. You should look for those made before 1980. Good luck ---------- Icon_lol
