HiFi Shop in Singapore

Post by elhefe on Thu Jan 06, 2011 7:00 pm

Hi all,

Planning to visit Singapore 28th Jan to 1st Feb.

1. Can anyone please recommend me a good hifi shop (well stocked and lots of option) for this trip.

I will be staying in Grand Hyatt hotel. Any shops nearby?

I am particularly interested in Musical Fidelity, ARCAM, QED, Olive.

2. How does the tax works in Changi and KLIA? Will the items be taxed in KLIA? Is there a tax refund in Changi?

Don't underestimate women. Your wife's shopping might well take up 90kg !!! Laughing

I have not bought anything from SG for a long time but from what I remember, assuming it is still valid, at the shop you pay VAT and at the airport you fill in a form and submit it at a special counter. Then they mail the refund check to you later (doesn't take a very long time though, SG is known for its efficiency).

For customs, as usual lar, tengok nasib.....

The last time I was at custom clearance near KLIA to claim a package that was detained, the officer there actually asked me where I bought my item from (it was a huge box containing a pair of car headlights) and when I mentioned online, he asked 'eBay kar' ? So tricks like keeping the receipt and then trying to pass an item off as 'murah saja lar barang ini' probably don't work anymore nowadays. BUT I have not experienced it for a long time already so others would have more up to date advice I hope.

U have to realise that the dates u mention are pretty close to CNY. Check to make sure they are still open.

Eons ago I made the mistake to dropping by during CNY. Not even the big Shopping Malls were open...

Go to Music by Design at the Adelphi. Look for Cheng Fai or Eugene. Great chaps.

Musical Fidelity & QED(?) - Alpha Audio, Adelphi 1st Floor, PIA shop. This is one which I would avoid.

ARCAM - Global Audio (Signage is Linn Audio) #02-30 The Adelphi S179803 Tel: 63375718

Olive - Eighteen 77 Pte Ltd The Adelphi, #04-01 Tel: 6338 0967.

Are you looking at the Olive O6HD Music Server?

Drop in at AFA Electronics Pte Ltd Unit #02-05 The Adelphi for a listen to the Bryston BDP-1/BDA-1 combo and Reference Audio The Adelphi #04-27/28 to the Zodiac+(Gold should be arriving soon).

Enjoy your trip.

Adelphi very close to Cityhall MRT.

With current exchnage rate and the custom tax, i'm wondering whether still worth to buy new equipment there?

2nd item there maybe still worth to think of.

Elhefe,
You'll go crazy at Adelphi! The whole complex is a hifi time bomb! Just ensure you focus what you're looking for or you'll drift away and get overly excited by other beauties.
About the Brystons you could still get to audition at Wisma Rojas where you are working. Just leg work will do.
sss333 is right..It' ll take just a 5 min. walk from Cityhall MRT. Eat your heart out!

I dropped by AV-D to listen to the Brystons last week as I was around that area and had around an hour to 'kill'. But unfortunately they are more 'by appointment only' and they were closed. I dropped by at around 11am.

Bro, request a favour if u can larr, while you're there (I'm sure you're itching to Very Happy), can you check out latest price Livingvoice speakers (in particular Avatar II model) at Soundscape Hifi Unit #02-44 The Adelphi, Very Happy. just compare selling price now before posting mine for sale Very Happy.

Anyway, they stock/have some excellent used/excellent gears there too. Was thinking taking a plunge at a demo Lavardin IT amp there about two months ago but didn't make the final trip and ended up with something else..

Or visit ListenInn at #B1-35, The Adelphi, if too near CNY, u can call up the ever amiable Kher Hurr or his dad, Mr Goh. I'm sure a few fellow kakis and dealers here deal with them regularly here. Lots of second hand/used stuff plus can request them to deliver Very Happy to Malaysia later.

Anyway have a good shopping trip cheers sunny

Ok all. Thanks for all the tips. I was wondering what is this Adelphi is. So its a mall full of hifi shops just like Amcorp Mall lah or Low Yat.

For the Olive, I want to compare price. here they really mark up lah. Cannot tahan.

For Bryston, I already ha d a listen here at AV design.

Adelphi is really just a shopping complex, just that many hifi shops congregate there. It's like a super version of what City Square used to be la. Or a bit like a slightly higher end version of Amcorp mall.

So you already listened to the Bryston. Impressed ? I will be having my listen sometime next week. At a friend's place.

Yes Bryston done. But just the DAC with PMC speakers. Not interested in the media player. I would not say the sound is better lah but definitely different from my MF set up.

For VAT claims make sure you have your passport at the place of purchase. Tell the sales staff that you intend to claim VAT on your exit from Singapore. At the airport, before entering the departure hall, you must present the goods to the Customs officer for verification and stamping of the receipts. With the receipts and the completed forms you may now enter the departure hall and claim your VAT at the VAT counter. You may opt for cash or through credit card refund.

When I go to Adelphi, I always drop by at one of the music shops for "treasure hunting". Not to mention, some of the prices are more attractive compared to KL.
