Epic Twin is the result of combining elements of two of Chord's most popular cables, Odyssey and Signature. By taking the shielding system used on the Signature and adapting it to suit Odyssey, the Chord Company has been able to produce a speaker cable that combines the strengths of both cables.
Epic, like Odyssey, features two conductors each made up of 19 strands of silver-plated oxygen free copper conductors. Chord has always used multi strand conductors in their speaker cables but favour fewer, heavier gauge conductors over fine stranded rope weave designs. The overall diameter of each conductor is 2.5 mm. The two conductors which are twisted together are insulated by Teflon and then surrounded by a silicone jacket.
Epic has the addition of a dual shielding system applied to the outer silicone of Odyssey that is then surrounded with a special PVC jacket to further improve mechanical damping. The PVC jacket itself is extremely pliable and finished in a translucent grey with an overall diameter 15 mm for Epic Super Twin.

Chord Odyssey speaker cable shares its principal design features with Chord Rumour.
Like Rumour, each conductor is made up of 19 strands of silver-plated oxygen free copper surrounded by Teflon insulation. However, the strands are of a heavier gauge and whereas Rumour uses 1.5mm overall diameter conductors, Odyssey uses 2mm overall diameter conductors.
The larger diameter conductors help Odyssey to carry dynamic information extremely well and this produces real improvements to the weight, attack and dynamic of notes across the entire frequency range. Cymbals are noticeably more realistic and acoustic guitars and pianos more lifelike; this ability to carry dynamic information so well means that Odyssey produces a remarkably musical and coherent sound. This, combined with Odyssey’s neutral tonality, helped it to win the Hi-fi News Best Speaker Cable award for five years in a row.

Chord Rumour speaker cable technical information


Improved dynamics, better detail levels, exceptional tonal neutrality, just some of the benefits that silver-plated conductors can bring. To make silver cables work at their best however, we believe it is critical to combine them with Teflon insulation. Our experiments show that cheaper insulation materials often introduce unwanted colouration and can make a system sound bright and bass heavy.
Chord Rumour is the first speaker cable in the Chord range to use this combination of silver-plated conductors and Teflon insulation. It was also the first speaker cable that we produced using twisted conductor configuration. We experimented with several cable geometries before settling on the twisted pair configuration that we have used ever since. Following repeated listening tests, we felt this configuration offered some genuine advantages over the more commonly used heavy gauge parallel pair designs that were commonly used at the time.
Rumour has influenced every other Chord speaker cable produced since and such is the performance of Rumour, its design has remained unchanged since its introduction.
Each conductor is made up of 19 strands of silver-plated oxygen free copper. These are insulated by Teflon and surrounded with an outer jacket of silicone. Silicone was chosen as an outer jacket partly for its flexibility and partly for its excellent mechanical damping characteristics.
Rumour is a remarkably compatible speaker cable and can be used in a wide range of amplifiers and speakers, from mini systems right up to large floor standing speakers. Rumour will produce excellent definition throughout the frequency range, outstanding dynamics and once run in, an outstandingly neutral tonal quality. This level of performance comes from a cable with a diameter of only 5 mm, making Rumour the ideal choice for extracting genuine performance from what in hi-fi terms is a near invisible cable.

This is a well-balanced speaker cable with powerful, tuneful bass and an open, expressive mid range and treble. Carnival Silver Plus will bring out the best in any hi-fi or home cinema system.


On the face of it, Carnival Silver plus breaks one of Chords firmly held design principles, namely “the performance of a conductor is critically affected by the choice of dielectric”. The Chord Company have always used Teflon® as a dielectric with silver plated conductors; this is because they believe that other materials adversely affect the sound quality. Carnival Silver Plus uses Polyethylene in a very clever way that minimises conductor/dielectric contact, overcoming the sound quality issues usually encountered when using silver with anything other than Teflon®.

Using a variation on Chord's current twisted pair design, Carnival Silver Plus features two sets of six identical heavy gauge silver plated oxygen free copper wires. These wires are wrapped around a circular polyethylene dielectric in a spiral and each wire is held in place and prevented from touching each other with another circular polyethylene spacer between each conductor. The diameter of the spacers is crucial to the cable's performance, as the spacers minimise conductor/dielectric contact and in effect produce a semi air-spaced cable, (a first at this price level). They also ensure that conductor spacing remains consistent regardless of the curvature of the cable and prevent the outer jacket from affecting performance. The outer jacket is clear PVC, which is a good choice being both flexible and strong.
