KLIAV 2011 show - top 3 systems
My vote for No1 goes to the ElectroCompaniet system. Can't decide for no 2 and 3 though

Re: KLIAV 2011 show - top 3 systems
1) German Physiks - for dynamics + stereotype shattering (for me at least) omnis imaging capabilities
2) Harbeth P3 - I like it enough to buy a pair. So finally I can say I'm a Harbeth owner
3) STAX 007 - put my money where my mouth is...
honourable mention :
1) Bryston + PMC
2) Jo Ki's room (did not spend enough time to make a thorough judgement but so many people)
3) Triangle room - I sought out the CD played through that system
4) ARC + Sonus Faber combo - Pity it was playing lounge music but I'm an ARC fan boy
5) The Xavian from Eastern Europe also sounded nice
6) Budget system - The small Castle + Cambridge combo sounded way better than they should

>>>Triangle room - I sought out the CD played through that system
What CD was that ??
>>German Physiks - They demoed a very dynamic "chinese drum and cymbal" track. The dynamics are truly very impressive. But what lost me there was that the cymbals sounded truncated ....like having stopped halfway, with no overtones and follow through. Was the cymbal intentionally played that or did the speaker missed something ?
Does anyone know what CD that was used for the demo ?

They had Shelby Lynne - A little Lovin' on demo. Cannot find the CD anymore. Bought the vinyl instead.
One of the test tracks used was the Sheffield Drum Test CD. Don't know the Chinese or it Japanese drum pieces played later.

The PMC/Bryston combo was just too clinical and clean, with so many obvious Torus power conditioners seen around and an overkill.

I believe the CD that you looking for sounds something like this :
I'm 21 and I'm five foot nine
Got a face and a body to change your mind
I'm a picture so fine to see,
Whenever I walk the streets of town
The men and the boys they all fall down
Saying " Darling, come home with me,
Oh, pretty darling, come home with me"

Sorry Joe Ling, if you had identified yourself to me, I would cleared the room just for you. However, thank you for picking LS3/5A room in your honourable list
Yes, there were many visitors throughout all 3 days and I thank all.

Gloraglory,
Thank you so much for your vote, very honourable.
With the given limited time that all exhibitors have, I have to say that they, as well as myself, were fighting against time before the show is opened to public. We have barely one day to make our system sing and that is no easy feat. My personal opinion of the show this year is the standard has improved! This is commendable indeed and I congratulate all exhibitors for their good efforts!

Amanda McBroom - Dreaming.
The XRCD2 version is the best pressing so far.
The original CD was released in the mid-late 80s under the Monster Music (related to Monster Cable) label.

Re: KLIAV 2011 show - top 3 systems
JoKi's LS3/5A system also sounded very good.
Another surprise is the Indian made Rethm Saadhana speakers.
However what i cannot understand is why those megasystems like Focus-JM Labs/McIntosh, Dynaudio Evidence Temptation/Jeff Rowland, JBL Everest, Sonus Faber amati futura.. all sounded so poor. These are all very expensive systems !!
They were all supported with expensive sources, cables etc. For the purpose of learning, can someone shed some light as to why this may be so ? I am not sure if these setups are supported by any power conditioning equipment. Room acoustics alone does not explain it all.

a lot of it is due to room acoustics. ask htkaki how he struggled to get decent sound with his svs sub-woofers last year.
the rooms on the 4th floor where the mega systems are located are all very big. for e.g. the av designs' room is something like 30 ft X 60 ft.
the cmy, perfect hifi and audio perfectionist rooms are also very huge.
for e.g. last year, the pro ac carbon 8 at cmy's room did not sound good, but at the cmy showroom which measures 20' X 30' they sounded very good.
most of the systems at the kliavs had power conditioning.

sflam wrote:[most of the systems at the kliavs had power conditioning.
Thats near mandatory as hotel or many highrise 13A sockets are all ring circuits, moreover hotel ones may go though solid state switching (keycard actuated power). Its not good for hifi..afterall its still a hotel with purpose and intent.

It was a nightmare if you ask me about the room that we occupied in 2010
The HF and mid were quite ok in the room except LFE. The bass is missing in the odd shape room.
I found out that the wall is of hollow partition. With even 6 subwoofers, I struggle to get the impact. Truth to be told, it was only half of the performance of a single PB13-Ultra in my demo room. I did everything that I could for 3 days until I finally gave up on Sat night.
I told Ron Stimpson that it's killing me with such lousy LFE. He thought that I was too fussy. When he came to my demo room on Monday, I demo it again to him with the single PB13-U. Only then, he knew why (BTW, not many Americans' homes have solid walls for their HT rooms)
For those who had been to my HT room or owned one, they knew how a SVS should sound. I wonder how the tenant of the room fared since I did not have the chance to audition their system.
Having said that, my POV for this room might not be a good yardstick or representation of other rooms since my experience only limit to this room as well as room 8031.
Re: KLIAV 2011 show - top 3 systems
I have always wondered why the big guns chose the Level 4 rooms. They are typically so unsympathetic to good sound. CMY is smarter this year, they also had a room at Level 7 or 8 (forgot which) where they put their top of the range system. It suffered from bass boom on Friday but sounded better, with an LP with less bass content, on Sunday evening.

when i was at cmy, i thought i was hearing some strange sounds from the left speaker until i realised the sound was from the neighbour - perfect hifi's system.
the same thing happened at perfect hifi's room. the strange sound from the right side was from cmy.
the two dealers were playing different types of music - cmy played chinese music while perfect hifi played western pop.

Hi VS126, it was good to see you. And you definitely deserves the emperor's seat of my room!
I can more or less recognise most of the visitors after doing the show for so many years. Many of them also seeing me growing older, hence the title "uncle" has come of age I must say.
Thank you for recognising my room.

All room sounds good. There is no bad sounding room.
Electrocompaniet sounds excellent.
I enjoyed JoKI's system, short of offering to buy his crystals.
Joseph Audio speaker at Lawrence/Vincent's room also gets my vote.

Reminds me of our system last year. The deep LFE was actually 'accumulated' in the toilet near the staircase to level 3. When I went in there, the whole toilet literally shaking. The staff looked around in bewilderment
But, I can't tell my customer to go to toilet to listen to LFE.
