NOS Malaysian made LPs

Post by DrWho on Tue Oct 25, 2011 11:17 pm

I recently came across a wide range of New Old Stock Malaysian made LPs in the most unexpected place. Most of them were popular titles. Are these LPs easily available? I have been offered Lock Stock and Barrel so that they could clear up some space! Can always share the loot with you guys.

Back since the late 60s, there's been a local LP mfg plant(s) (in Cheras i've been told) that was pressing popular stuff until it shut down in the mid to late 80s. These served the MY-SG-Brunei markets.

Common local pressings would be those "3-eye" Columbia label (as opposed to US pressed 6-eye labels) and some on the EMI labels as well (i think).

Perhaps some old local vinyl guru can provide more detailed info ....

K.M.I.L.P.J or better known as Kings Music Industries Ltd PJ or not very well known as Hup Hup Sdn.Bhd. (Life Records) owned the leading pressing plant here. Whether located in Cheras or not, ain't sure. After they secured license to press CBS/Sony and possibly a few other labels for local or regional distribution in early 70's, they were at their peak, pressing LP's and selling them like roti canai Twisted Evil by the truck loads.

EMI Lp's were not pressed by them, and I think its in Singapore, starting off with EMI Regal label. I only know bits and pieces of these stories, I stand corrected.

Just another olde story, Hup Hup had a chain of record stores in KL/PJ. Was popularly known as Music City. EMI's chain were named as Music Center. Nice pretty SWT gals dressed in smart RED uniform (look a bit like air hotesses..NOT MAS ah!) manned the stores and tested LP's of your choice. No GUYS!.. Then there was a apecial listening booth for 2 where you can audition your chosen LP's or 45's. If you like it to be played on the main loudspeakers, they would oblige. I can't remember what equipment they used but I think it was B & O TT's and Leak solid state amps. No Jap stuff to be seen. I think these were custom and likely standard equipment for EMI shops. Music City used all Lenco L75 TT's..the workhorse from morn till night.

EMI had 2 stores in PJ, one block away from Wisma Thrifty Jalan Barat, the other at the the recently demolished Jaya Supermarket Sect 14. I think they had another couple in KL. They were established there in the 70's before the likes of Horizon Music and later Salem Power House in the mid 80's. Popular Music City (owned by Hup Hup) branches were at Jalan Yong Shook Lin PJ, Jalan Bukit Bintang, and Jalan Mountbatten(renamed Jalan Tun Perak) (within Robinson's store, now totally non existant). The wonderful thing about Music City was you get a spanking new shrink wrapped LP when you buy any album. The ones on the rack are purely for demo and testing.

In Jalan Tun HS Lee, there was that Yan Kee Records beside the Madras cinema, catering to largely Chinese music.
I think I patronized nearly every shop back then. Really fun places but NOT ENOUGH MONEY to spend!
Semua SUDAH TUTUP!...sad

Gosh.. i only remember buying MJ's Thriller LP from HORIZON MUSIC at (the recently demolished) Jaya Sec.14 in the 80s .... it was a CBS UK pressing and still plays flawlessly today.

But rewinding even further back, there's this really big music store on Jln Chow Kit, Fom-Lom. This is really the 50s-60s era. Might Anyone know in greater detail what subsequently happened to Fom-Lom music store ?

But fret not, today we got ROCK CORNER, and an even more super duper powderful music store: www.amazon.com

LOL.

The lables include CBS, MCA Records, United Artists Records etc but all made under license. Are they worth much? All are still 'virgin' untouched, kept in the original boxes after being pressed. I really need your advise here. Either I buy them Lock Stock and Barrel or they disappear forever. What is the market for one, say Shirley Bassey 25 Anniversary Album (2 records set)

I just want to collect these NOS LPs first. Will decide how and when to "share" them later. There are plenty to go around.

Recently their prices have gone up 4-5 fold! I was fortunate enuf to acquire a few of Sudirman's titles for around rm40 each at Amcorp in the late 90's and early this century. Only regret was not acquiring more....there were Headwind, Zainal, Search, Alleycats etc just lying around those days...and some good nostalgic Hindi albums too. Surprised

From my experience, the CD issue (or numerous recent re-issues) are not really bad at all, IF you're into the music and not entirely about the audiophile sense of it all. I have numerous CD issues of them, buy whenever I feel like it, also because I won't fork out silly money for the LP. Of course there's many Malay or Malaysian artists albums not easily available on LP, so the CD is the next best thing. There are some LP's I have and I bought the CD issue, its not night and day difference, not bad at all. Its the music, man!

Having said that, I think lots of people just feel more fun factor dropping a needle on the original vinyl LP than conveniently slotting that 5" piece of digital plastic disc.

The situation is not as rosy as it looks. 80% are junks NOS BUT junks, unknown artists etc. 15% are good and 5% are gem with some imported presses. Picking and choosing now, paying higher rate.
