the A-809 produces 105 watts per channel into 8 ohms at negligible distortion, as measured using the FTC standard. The A-809`s dynamic power, which more closely follows musical peaks, is 235 watts per channel into 4 ohms. (Most speakers are between 4 and 8 ohms.) That`s plenty of brawn.

Flaunting its finesse, the A-809 employs a microprocessor that controls motors and switches in the amplifier. The motors turn the volume control and source selector. This facilitates remote control without compromising sound quality. The use of purely electronic controls sometimes raises the noise level. The signal-to-noise level of the A-809`s high-level inputs, such as tape, CD and tuner, is 107 decibels, which is in the range of the best CD players.

Onkyo achieves the perfect balance between simplicity and flexibility. Three large knobs control all essential functions. One of these is the oversize volume-control knob positioned dead center on the front panel. Three small knobs adjust tone and balance. Three rotary switches and four push buttons constitute the remainder of the controls. The rotary switches select speakers, recording outputs and phono cartridges. Onkyo still includes a full phono preamp with a choice of moving-magnet or moving-coil cartridge.

Eight inputs provide plenty of options for present and future music sources. A source-direct switch bypasses the tone and balance controls, shortening the path the sound must travel. This removes circuitry that could affect the sound, however subtly. The A-809 includes two complete tape-monitor circuits and a DAT input as part of its eight inputs.

The tone controls of the A-809 boost bass and treble in an unusual manner. Turning the volume control knob past its center position decreases the amount of bass and treble boost progressively, until at maximum volume there is no tone boost. The volume setting has no influence on bass and treble reduction.

The neat interior construction of the A-809 shows good construction quality. The power supply, a very important part of an amplifier, employs the highest-quality components and advanced technology. The transformer creates very low magnetic fields when compared with the normal transformers used in amplifiers. At almost 37 pounds, the weight of the A-809 makes it evident that Onkyo didn`t skimp on parts.

The A-809 sounds a cut above the majority of receivers. It reproduces smooth, solid bass and clean treble. The sound rivals separate preamps and power amps in the under-$1,000 price range. Choosing the A-809 combines sanity and great sound.
