Gesang Martohartono (1^stOctober 1917 to 20 May 2010) was born in the city of

Surakarta (Solo) in Central Java.

He was self-taught singer-songwriter who composed the legendary song now

synonymous with Indonesia and is famously known in Japan and much of Asia.

Regard as the leading exponent of the Javanese style of Keroncong

In 1991, a group of appreciative Japanese war veterans returned and erected a life-

sized staute of Gesang in Surakata Park, to mark their respects for the composer of

the tune that managed to cross the cultural barriers of wartime.

Waldjinah, the popular and talented singer is the niece.
