If you don't calibrate your TV you may find colours are too bright or the contrast between deep blacks and bright whites isn't as stark as it should be. Calibrating your TV means you can achieve the best picture quality possible while also reducing any eye strain you'd get from watching for hours.
TVs need to be calibrated to the room, and a brightly lit living room will have vastly different picture needs than a darkened custom home theater. Whether your TV is fighting with daylight bouncing off of white walls or is settled comfortably in a well-furnished, dark gray cave is the difference that determines what sort of light and color it needs to put out. In bright rooms, gamma (explained below) might be adjusted to a low curve and colors might be oversaturated just a bit to stand out against the ambient light. In a dark room, a higher gamma curve can help preserve shadow details against the lower light level.
