hi guys, need some advice.

1. what justify small, large speakers for ht setup? does bookshelf considered small or large?

2. can i use different speakers impedance like for center & front its 8 ohm, while for rear & surround rear (mine is 6.1) i use 6 ohm speakers?

1. Generally, if you set any of the speakers as 'Large', bass that is channel-specific will be routed to those speakers. Otherwise, the AV amp will re-route bass to the subwoofer instead of to those speakers that are set to 'Small'.

2. Should be OK. Refer to AV amp manual for further explanation.

1. there really is no standard for small or large speakers.
If you are used to Computer USB speakers, then a pair of LS3/5a would be "large' in comparison. But the LS3/5a would be be "puny" compared to say a pair of Infinity IRS V floorstanders.

2. Sure. What matters more is that you calibrate your AV Amp's channel outputs so that the speakers (doesn't matter whatever impedance) will have consistent dB output with the pink noise test tones. If your AV Amp doesn't have this built in feature, then you'll need to get some sort of test disc and a SPL meter to do your own manual calibrations & settings.

from my understanding, satellite speaker refers to small & floorstander refers to large. just wondering where does bookshelf stand? i've tried both setup & yes, by selecting large all those "boom bang phiu dush dush krangg!! vroomm vroomm kecing!! ratatatatatat tebabooom" mids & lows goes to the bookshelf & sounded much better. i barely notice sounds that comes from my sub. i also notice that, when using low watt speakers, the surround sound is more bright & precise but you cant crank to loud volume as it may distort the speakers eventually. wandering how bose will perform at this stage? small speaker but big sound. can it be paired with hi ends avr?

as for no 2, feels like a bit risky to do so. theres a 4ohm & 8ohm switch selection on the rear of the avr, so im not sure by doing this can harm the avr in the future.

encik bimmer : the day you decide to Marky 390s, is the day you start to sets your high tension lol!

Set all speakers to small regardless of whether bookshelf or floorstander if you have a very good and controlled sub/subs, and you still can play around with the different LFE frequency routed to each speakers for the best and more balanced overall sound, the overall sound is clearer with better imaging.
In this way, your speakers are less distorted and will perform their best.
However you may set all speakers to large if you have the very good quality of bookshelves or floorstanders ( full range speakers, perhaps )driven by good quality and powerfull amplification in a larger dedicated av room.
my 2 cents..

no offense la encik bimmer, just tickling u around. anyway, marky's 390 does look sexy. it reminds me of good looking car & mind you good looking car doesnt mean pari-pari or lembu jeannie & whatnot. it can be as simple as type R ep3 or even r34 with nice widebody make-up from respected tuners. well thats my opinion & it doesnt reflects anyone else whom i dont really care What a Face .. nuff said

mr hughesths, fullrange for surround speakers?? ouchh. cost u heaps bro. anyway, any suggestion on satellites besides bose?? if anyone can recommend a brand will appreciate if you can include the price as well. thanks

Azri, where got any offence taken? I'm tickled silly and loving every moment of your charming anecdotes. Especially your famous one liners! Very Happy

That Marky 390s sure is beautiful. Like a exotic sports car but that Marky 390s is sadly a conspiracy. It does not exist. I think it's made of cardboard and houses nothing but air in it's cardboard casing. Just like those prototype cars you see at motorshows. It's just a good looking prop made of styrefoam and propped up with 4 22 inch wheels to draw attention to a manufacturer Very Happy

Because if it were real, i'd have owned it by now. Crying or Very sad

So if you come across one of those mythical being called No.390s, please point me there and i'll believe it when I finally own it. Very Happy

Mr Azri,
Why don't you consider bookshelf speakers in stead of satellite speakers?
Smaller speakers with less than 3-4 inch driver tend to have greater distortion level during movie dynamic scenes or higher volume level, famous brand Bose is included . Unless you have a very small area for av, otherwise for long term av satisfaction, I suggest you go for bookshelf speakers with at least 4 inch driver and buy the best sub you can afford.
Regards.

at this moment, i am using 2 sets of bookshelf with 5 inch driver for surround. it looks a bit serabut compares to satellite. like the idea of double cube bose as surround but again, im not sure how reliable these expensive satellites for high end avrs & further more in 2 ch mode it sounds like shiat!!

Mr Azri,

If you are serious in hifi/av sound quality and especially product reliability but not lifestyle, again, choose the bookshelf from example, UK-Mission, kef, Quad...etc in stead of the more expensive Bose satellites which are more to lifestyle than undistorted sound quality.
The smaller satellites like Bose sounds harsh, bright and distorted when being pushed a little harder, and speakers permanent damage ( distortion ) will eventually occur, so it's not that reliable.
Quality sound only matters to me, never mind 'serabut". questions regarding ht setup Icon_smile
