Description :
The Audio Note AN-J/B is a 6 ohms two way speaker based on an early Peter Snell design: wide front, narrow front-to-back, and fairly large for a "bookshelf" speaker. It undergoes the painstaking driver selection and matching process, which ensures the closest tolerances within a pair in the entire audio industry. The Audio Note AN-J/B is a ported enclosure with an efficiency better than 93dB/m and bass that goes down to 25Hz at -6dB. The materials used for drivers are good, old fashioned paper for the woofer cone and impregnated silk for the dome tweeter. These materials, when matched correctly, marry the low and high frequencies seamlessly, providing the best level of performance possible in the real world of acoustics. Bracing and internal damping is kept to a minimum and strategically applied to help, not hinder the drivers.

The Audio Note AN-J/B has been designed to be placed close to room boundaries, where the bass performance is augmented significantly by the additional reinforcement offered by the nearby walls. In this position, it will outperform any similarly sized speaker regardless of origin, thanks in part to the shallow cabinet and wide baffle shape which gives the drivers the best possible operating conditions, allowing them to perform as if they are mounted in a virtual wall. This provides the most undisturbed sound field with the widest and most even dispersion possible from a real world cabinet shape. The crossover of the Audio Note AN-J/B is simple, essentially first order, hardwired and incorporates air-cored chokes and selected bipolar and polypropylene capacitors.

The sound is immediate and dynamic with very natural tonality and remarkable bass extension for its size. The bass is also deep and tuneful with incredible microdynamics. The midrange is expertly textured and expressive without being overly lush and natural. The treble is smooth and accurate without any taint of harshness. The Audio Note AN-J/B is capable of reproducing the scale and intensity of most well-recorded music very realistically. The sheer musicality gives a huge improvement in soundstage width and depth, musical textures and clarity, even in a non-optimum setup. It performs extraordinarily well with any musical genre from simple acoustic to large scale orchestral music without getting muddled or compressed. It reproduces acoustic instruments and vocals extremely well, no sibilance and done with proper tonality. The Audio Note AN-J/B is a true joy to listen to, presenting the performance in a natural way, with great instrumental overtones and decent soundstage depth. All the octaves are well integrated, without noticeable discontinuities. The speakers are very coherent and the drivers blend wonderfully to speak with an unified voice, as if they are specially designed and built from the ground up to achieve this coherency. They are similar to a good single driver speaker but with much better bass and fullness.

The Audio Note AN-J/B's strengths lead to their main disadvantage. Their ability to present such a great musical performance on well recorded and produced music really shows the deficiencies of poorly done recordings. The compression, lack of soundstage and distortions on poorly produced examples are made all the more apparent. They do not accentuate their weakness, but it is not hidden. In terms of placement, Audio Note AN-J/B are very well suited for low-power tube amplifiers and can also be a good match for solid state amplifiers. It is a rear ported design that likes to be used very close to a rear wall and even across the rooms corners. They are ideally suited for rooms ranging from 130 sq. ft. to 430 sq. ft.
