Wyred 4 Sound DAC - Is This Good?

Post by ryder on Sun Nov 21, 2010 4:37 pm

Anybody listened to the Wyred 4 Sound DAC 1 or 2? If yes, is this a good DAC at its price point? One forummer on Audiogon replaced his Weiss Minerva with the DAC1 and has no regrets. Does the W4S live up to the hype?

Would appreciate any inputs.

Oh yea baby. I have a dac 2 bought on a whim. Better than the Minerva in my system. Trying to sell of the Weiss & keeping the dac 2. Small problem with software though. Now with the dealer in Singapore for update.

Thanks for the response. May I ask if you have used the DAC2 with dedicated CD players, and if yes what are those players? Also, the DAC2 shares the same 9018 Sabre chip with the DAC1 but adds the 24-bit/192kHz Asynchronous USB input and some other upgrades. Do both DACs sound almost similar or it is a matter of more features on the DAC2?

Most comments on the Wyred4Sound DACs on Audiogon have been overwhelmingly positive as folks dub this as a giant killer and advise not to underestimate its relatively low price.

Ryder,

It is a very good DAC regardless of the price. The preamp that comes with it is also a giant killer. For the DAC 2, you can go straight to the power amp using it's internal pre with remote.

I use Philips based CD transport.

For Computer audio, the best match is J Rivers 15 with Wasapi and Window 7. No problem with playing 24/192 files and it is auto detect.

Thanks for the response VS126. The DAC2 looks good although I don't need the additional built-in preamp. The DAC1 is more right up my alley. I'm not into computer audio yet and do not have any audio files on computer format but will probably venture into it soon.

Yes. I thought my dac hunt would b over by getting the audiophile approved Weiss Minverva (this was just before the more expensive 202 came into the market). In my system, I was disappointed. Compared it against my 10 year old heavily modded AN 1.1 dac but still kept the AN in the main system. Then the dac 2 came & it took over the main system until I had to get the software issue sorted. Since then, an AR dac 8 has taken up main converting duties.

Just to qualify, I listen mostly to female vocals so I have some bias.

Post by mikechai on Mon Dec 13, 2010 9:14 am

There is a new review comparing 4 USB DACs. Might worth a read.
