Help Needed Empty Help Needed

Post by manukes Wed Apr 13, 2011 4:10 pm

New to the forum so... greetings to all.
I have limited knowledge of audio matters and would welcome a bit of help/advice. I have a pretty basic set-up with Marrantz 1501 receiver coupled with Mordaunt Short Alumni 3.1 speaker system. Maybe I was wrongly advised in buying but I am a little disappointed with the sound I am getting - a bit too warm/mellow/bassy. I find out now that apparently if I want a brighter/sharper sound, I should have chosen a different receiver (Onkyo maybe) and also speakers other than my particular Mordaunts. Maybe later I will look to change something in my equipment but in the meantime I am thinking that perhaps my system could be better set up and in this respect is it possible that there is a knowledgeable member located in Kuching that could advise.

Manukes,
Not trying to be an expert here, but base on your description; it sound like you are talking about music reproduction here. If yes, you have got a Ht setup that doesnt do well on music at all.

IMO, you need 15~20k on a decent HT setup that can play admirably on both Music and movie. That's only on the equipment count. You need know-how to make it really sing.

Mean time, I believe you would have 5 speakers and 1 Sub? Oh man, a lot of stuff to take care of. And it produces polluting noise if you dont have space/auxillaries for them to sing.

Suggestions: Things you can do other than relying on the evil Sound processor.. put your speaker on proper stand, fill with sand or lead to 70% full. Make sure it is spike to floor as well.
- Pull your speaker away from rear wall.
- Sit your receiver on cone or metal footer. spiky type.
- Other tweak will be including changing cables/Interconnect.
You can try what has been suggested in this link as well.
http://www.gcaudio.com/resources/howtos/tuningtips.html

Bear in mind, you may not hear anything on some of the tweaks suggested. Not because it is BullShit, most likely your system isnt resolving enough.

If you ask me, I will sell off the whole setup and get to Hi Fi stereo. Because it is cheaper and easier to setup decent sound than HT.

Many thanks for very helpful response. I have 3 speakers and sub and the 3 speakers are bookshelf type (Mordaunt S. Alumni 2's and an Alumni 5 Centre. All sitting on cabinet. Might have misled a little by over-emphasising music preference which actually is nothing more serious that listening to Music DVD's (Eagles/Clapton/Taylor et al) and Films so thought that reasonal HT set up would be OK.
I am hoping to get someone to have a listen to it, then I may well pick a couple of my good track music DVDs and have a little tour around to see if I can listen to some alternatives. Then maybe I could sell of my gear which, though not off the top shelf, is OK, and I might find someone who wants a 'swop' - who knows. Main thing is I think right now is to see if my system can be improved by tweaking, so.... just hoping.

Actually I often wonder why it happens as well. Could be a bug. I don't see any functions on my moderator dashboard which allows me to change the background colour of a post. Or else, I'd probably end up changing most of the regular's posts - ppl like the eagle, MF, SJ, and gang - into blue colour because somehow we always end up talking cock !! Laughing

Maybe then you should have a button to stamp the avatar of frequent contributors with a cock... as in a 'chicken symbol' of approved cock talkers Laughing

That's a good idea. I wonder if the admin can be persuaded to check if this function is available. I am sure all of the regulars will then have the chicken as their avatar !! I will reserve especially big ones for SJ and MF !! Laughing

Hello Uncle Manukes, whatever you do, do not buy and use snake oil. Being a wild life conservation enthusiast myself, I am most abhorred by the wanton destruction of snakes for their oil by the audiophile industry.

Yours, when the buying stops, the killings will stop too, moderneagle

Hi manukes, are you really 79 years old? Shocked

The reason for asking is probably at your age, there is limited frequency that you can hear. No pun intended ya. I guess you need to audition very thoroughly before you part any of your money be it HT or Hifi.

The age is correct and you could be right about the frequency limitations. Certainly low frequency sounds could be a problem so maybe I need to check out something that will give more brighter sound...... as I said previously.
