Jazz in Films, what a niche territory! as long as it's niche, the privilege belongs to a few.
From Miles Davis' Score for the French Film "L'Ascensuer De L'echafaud" and Herbie Hancock's "Blow Up" in the past, Hollywood
embraces Jazz in a very special way.Nelson Riddle here seem to be the tour-de-force for such a genre, a composer/performer
who is equally at home with both Jazz and Orchestral sweeps, this lot brings three different Jazz Cats, who scored for
films with background so diverse as the music presented here - Quinta Ruban


1.Terence Blanchard - Original Sin (MGM Studios/Golden Circle/Chapter 3 Record - Made in Netherlands)
Terence Blanchard is not only one of jazz' young trumpet greats, he's also amassing a solid resume as a film composer, with Spike
Lee's Malcolm X and Summer of Sam among his credits. The film Original Sin pairs Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie in Cuba early
in the 19th century, and thus the score has a sweeping Classical element and Latin flavor, evident in tandem on the all-too-short piece
"Wedding Reception." Various musicians are given impressive solo time. Edward Simon's elegant piano fronts the mournful orchestra
on "Love Scene," while "Emily's Letter" and "It's Edmond" feature the balmy flamenco guitar sweetness of John Farricelli.
Blanchard's trumpet doesn't appear often enough, but he adds mood and mystery to the suspense-building "Try to Run" and the
sexy slow-dancing closing theme "Boat to Havana." "The Brothel" is essentially a spirited saloon piano solo by Simon.
As with most scores created by recording artists, a good handful of pieces actually function well on their own,Blanchard shows that he's equally comfortable with Latin as he is with his mastery of jazz.This is the First Cut meant for the European Market,
issued by the now by-gone GC Label, The sound/tone of the entire cd is warmer thus more acoustic in nature than the
mass-cut version usually found elsewhere - New and Sealed.

2.Abdulla Ibrahim- S'en Fout La Mort [No Fear,No Die] (Enja Records - Made in Germany)
Abdullah Ibrahim also known as Dollar Brand, a unique South African Jazz pianist discovered by the late but iconic composer
Duke Ellington, scores for Claire Denis's critically acclaimed feature film; infusing enough african-esque element into the film's
interracial theme but without the usual stereotypical sway by implementing the usual African percussive element
applied by several of his contemporaries, on similar subjects.One get's a feeling that Ibrahim has taken in much influence from Duke Ellington's Film Score "Anatomy of a Murder", but by adding his own unique african time signatures on the piano and the use of unique woodwind trio (Ricky Ford on Tenor Sax,Horance Alexander on Alto,Soprano Saxophone and Flute, and Frank Lacy on Trombone).
More than a soundtrack, No Fear No Die - stands higher as a Jazz Album that fed life to the movie's success - includes the famous
Dollar Brand composition "Nisa" and 'Calypso Major", strong rhythm section of acoustic bassist/jazz pioneer Buster Williams
joins forces with drummer Ben Riley, a rare album which not only captures the mystery of the subject in an evocative way without

3.Nelson Riddle Orchestra - Paris When it Sizzles/Great Music Great Films Great Sounds [2 in 1 Album] (Collectables Made in U.S.A)
This remastered/cleaned up version sounds just superb! Riddles' on riddles perhaps, the sweeping sound of the early 60's orchestral
"pops" meets jazzy element on the Audrey Hepburn flick "Paris When it Sizzles" is largely a mood-setter capturing the parisian mood
perfectly, the second album which is also bundled into this disc comprises of various hits arranged and performed by Nelson Riddle,
and has unique menacing moments, Henry Mancini's "Charade" here sounds best under Nelson's baton, Rodgers and Hart's "My
Romance" and "Little Girl Blue" clearly sets apart a master who's iconic presence in Jazz and Films, seems unblemished even if you
hear 50 years later, good music, great fun, brilliantly remastered. (New and Sealed)
