On this note after following a recommendation from an Audiogoner, I swapped a 'plain vanilla' pair of Sovtek 6922 tubes for EH6922 'gold pin' ones, slight 'sweetness' (if there's such a word). But then again I'm still going through the sound as I've been swapping my speaker cables around too so can't be too certain.. Last Wednesday, Nicholas (Promintheus) also passed on to me a pair of NOS GE to try on. May see how these combos pan out to be..

Cheers,

My vintage NOS Telefunkens did not come with gold pins but sounds like a million bucks anyway. Out of boredom I then treated the pins with Mapleshade Silclear and result... Amazing!

If your tubes/valves don't come with gold pins, try Silclear. If they do come with gold pins, try silclear anyway. The improvement is astounding!

hi bimmerman

i've experienced gold pinned amperex 5842 which never came near to ordinary pinned western electric 417a

no telefunken tubes are in gold pins, if my little experience may count, therefore these simply tell us that brand matters more/most!

That's the one Koo, brand matters most when it comes to tubes. And i'd like to add that vintage also matters. That's why RCA, Mullard or Telefunken tubes etc from a certain decade of manufcture costs more than others manufactured at a different time.

yeah brand matters most, like the tong kosong naim ooppsss

anyways.. right now im using mullard, saw a pair of amperex gold pin & cost around $40 oz bucks, at the same time theres a set of 4 nos copper pin matsushita selling for $25 aussie bucks.

koo, are u saying western electric copper sounded better than gold pin amperex? in another words amperex is a shiat tubes? hehe

Hey guys, gold pin or not doesn't matter as long as it sound good in your system. The matching n balancing of the system is most important.

For 6922 tube, I like my simens cca n amprex 7308PQ nothing can go close to these.

oh yes noodleman, matching is of utmost importance!

in addition, i think... if it glitters, it may not be gold and while it is gold, it may not be the best for all intents and purposes, undoubtably gold pins contain some element of gimmicks for placebo sells!!!

that said, you may agree if pinched waisted tubes cast less doubt as to sonic superiority huh!

Mr Noodle ( Very Happy, reminded me of 'Sesame Street),

What do you mean by 'tube noise'? Can you clarify please, i.e. some of the most sought after NOS are decades old and understandably, tubes/valves have 'shelf-life' or 'useable hour' for operation, but for 1-2 months use, how would it relate to 'tube noise?

Cheers,

zb

Fret not Mr. Raptor. Ebay has a very comprehensive buyer/seller rating system which favours buyers and penalizes bad sellers. I once ordered a turntable spirit levellar which never arrived so I made a complaint with ebay and they refunded my in 2 days.

Happy to report my half dozen Telefunken 12AU7 tubes (3X smooth plate circa 1960s, 3X ribbed plate circa 1940s) were accurately rated by the sellers with professional tube checking equiptment with measurements provided. I chose those rated beyond brand new (at a premium of course) and these have been stellar so far.

Give it a try Raptor! But be warned, serious credit card debt will follow.

Surely everyone have their own story of success and failure when buying from online. But so far I think there's been higher success rate than regrets for those who've done their research thoroughly and intelligently buy all sorts of things over the internet including Ebay. I'm also careful about buying things here and NEVER bank in money to someone you've never met or know. Its COD or nothing, simple.
Surely Mr Raptor here ain't that naive about internet purchase.

if i remember correctly above RM1 Grand plus shipping from the US of A for 4 tubes. And for my vintage RCA 6SL7 circa 1940, it was around RM400 for a matched pair.
