Most amplifiers do not recommend to connect 2 nos of speaker less than 8 ohms per channel.( i mean left or right channel) coz if you work out connecting 2 speaker will transale to 4 ohms and that is common parctise for manufacturer to built to withstand minimum 4 ohms. The girl connected 4 nos of 4 ohm speaker and that transalate to 2 ohms load per channel. That is a Big no no!

To sum it it is ok for you to connect one unit of 4 ohms per channel.

There is one for sale here http://www.mudah.my/vi/1866656.htm?ca=9_s

I got no comment on you deciding to bring back

The seller has asked me to post it back to him and he will check it out. Anyway will see what he has to say. He has a mint Sansui AU20000 for sale which he says is like new and he has it on the test bench at the moment. Dont think he will be selling it for RM1000 though.

There was a Sansui 9500 sold on ebay last week in very good condition from the pictures and that sold for AUD1400.

Hi arabungkus,

Called the guy and he hasnt quite made up his mind but from the sounds of it, it isnt going to be cheap. He says its very new and not more than 20 hours on it and that is going to tip the price upwards.

Says its working fine although, has been sitting cold all these years. I bought an amp from him and he rated it 7/10 but when I got it looked more like a 8.5/10...very good condition.

I left him my email address and he will contact me once he has decided.

Luxman - discussion thread - Page 2 Empty Classic Luxman SQ-507x in need of repair

Post by dev Wed Nov 18, 2009 6:44 am

Hi,

Inherited a Luxman SQ-507x from dad. Was working fine for some 38 years until recently when the right channel gave way. Suspect the power transistors 2SD218 and 2SA649 and transistor 2SC959 is faulty. I have been searching for the parts tirelessly but was unlucky enough. Please help me.

Thanks.

Its probable it could be other transistors or parts in the circuitry. A methodical way to confirm blown transistors are to carefully dismantle each of them and measure them Base, Emitter and Collector terminals for integrity. If they're leaky or shorted, consider them fried, then look for the exact or alternative parts, rather than guessing.

Post by dev Wed Nov 18, 2009 7:18 am

Hi bro,

The technician has checked the amplifier and has confirmed the power transistors 2SD218, 2SA649 and transistor 2SC959 is faulty. He has tried using a substitute but the transistors failed. He has also used the same working transistors from the left channel and fixed to the right channel . It was working fine.

Thanks

Hi cmboy

More for curiosity...how exactly do you diagnose leaky trannies? I guess one would need an analogue multimeter ala Sanwa?

Documented substitutes but no guarantee its fully compatible.
Extracted from my transistor substitution manual.
2SD218 = 2N3442, 2SD551, 2SD731
2SA649 = 2SB681. 2SB965, 2SB696, 2SB816
2SC959 = 2N1893, 2N2102

If I'm not mistaken, these transistors are obsolete and no more in production. You may have to source them from various online sites.

Yes, sanwa analog meter. Measure Base - Emitter, Base to Collector, Emitter - Collector
X10 range on meter. E.g. Single silicon transistor in most or all cases.
B-E Forward = Low resistance, Reverse = Almost little or no resistance (X100 X1000 range) Similar to measuring silicon diode)
B-C Same as above.
C-E None or negligible resistance forward or reverse.
Any abnormal deviation may point to leaky or fried chip.
Go experiment with any known new or unused transistor for your own education. They cost peanuts.

Thanks cmboy!

Your absolutely right that one needs to get off ones behind, do the work and go test some. But the trouble is we really need a known leaky transistor for us to observe it's characteristics when under test compared to a good trannie. Once we see the difference we will know. Unfortunately not so easy to knowingly buy a leaky trannie, and so we are not able to educate ourselves so easily.

Unfortunately, the only ones I have ever come across were shorted. I have never come across a leaky one. The open circuit or shorted is easy to catch, but how do we catch a leaky one? I guess the best imperical way to ask is...In what way is our meter's needle response different when we test a leaky trannie from when we test a good one!

Ah..if I had known earlier I could have given you a handful of leaky chips. Threw them away in the bin just recently from some repair. Perhaps another source of fried transistors could be from some faulty PC PSU's, but then again, many PSU's fail due to other component failure, not necessarily the switching transistors.
Actually no need to compare so much. As long as if the reading of a suspect chip deviates far from a known good one, just replace it and save the trouble. Then again, older germanium transistors do have some measurable leakage and its quite normal. (no more germaniums now)

Luxman - discussion thread - Page 2 Empty Luxman L-580

Post by ecoli123 Tue Jun 01, 2010 11:07 am

Many thanks to Mr. Oh, my vintage Luxman L-580 was resurrected. The 30 years old Luxman was kept in the store for the last 15 years when one of the channel became defective. Works like a charm now. Bought this amp during in 1980 from Pertama Audio; nostalgic!Luxman - discussion thread - Page 2 Luxman13

Don't remember the exact amount paid; but it should be within the 4 to 5 thousand ringgit range. And that was in the early 80's. I use to partner it with an Altec Lansing speaker and an AR turntable. I am still using the AR these days.

Post by ecoli123 Tue Jun 08, 2010 3:58 am

Speaking of Luxman L-580; does anyone know why there were two different models from Luxman with the same designation?

The L-580 integrated amp I owned is produced in the early 80s and the marketing buzz word then was the duo-beta circuitry. It is a 2x100w into 8 ohm amp with a beautiful wooden case.

In the 90s, during the Luxman-Alpine era, another L-580 is produced. This time it is a class A 2x50W integrated amp. It is rather unusual and confusing for Luxman to offer two models with the same designation; albeit they are from 2 different era. Goggle Luxman L-580 and you will find the images for these amps.

Just a trivial, some of you may be interested.

I once had a peek inside (and a very brief sound trial) the amp like yours..fantastic build quality and worth a keeper. I don't think any EU manufacturer could have matched that quality at that point in time.
