I've been researching JBL vintage pro audio monitors like 4430, 4350 etc... For possible matching with extremely over-powered 5watt and 3watt amplifiers!! If anyone has experience of these I'd be interested to know too!!

I am using JBL LE14C in custom made box with added Onkyo Horn as mid and Pioneer HPM 100 ribbon tweeter as high. Driven by A/B solid state amp for bass, Dynaco SCA-35 for high and mid.. quite happy with the result. easy to the ear. easy to the pocket too Very Happy

A friend of mine got this, but sorry not simply open to free invitations. This speaker is super rare now, next to impossible to buy locally. From numerous listening sessions, perhaps best driven by matching JBL Urei amplifiers (a slight chip swap and tweaked bias enhanced this amp performance even further). This speakers is not exactly best sounding with latest (or current makes and models of) solid state amplifiers, tried a few and it was errrr.......

Model 4343 is a pinnacle of JBL wholesome musicality, certainly makes you sit up (especially played to decent loudness) and tap your feet to a wide genre of music. Its really one of a kind rare but wonderful animal with a superb musical performance expected of a vintage JBL studio pedigree. People who're looking for ultimate resolution, detail, very sweet and extended highs, please don't think of these as a likely aquisition. Again, not everyone's cup of tea. Its with 15" paper cone woofer and horn tweeters with plastic front diffusers, it pushes a lot more air than weeny 5-6" drivers and 1" tweets.

I know some people dying for this model, got money to buy but can't find any.

The 4343's are HUGE!...

They are active speakers right? And contain their own amplifier unit.

A friend of mine mentioned that they would be great matches for simple tube amp set ups like SETs and SEPs. Would anyone know if the JBL 4series would be drive-able if one was using say a 5w EL84 based amplifier?

They are NOT active speakers and yes, they' quite big sized and heavy too. They can sit on the floor directly but I think it'll sound better elevated on some suitable stands. 4343 can go real loud with very satisfying dynamics if amplified properly.

SET's and similar puny wattage amps are not suitable mates and not able to push a lot of air for this model. Anything 100 watter would be a better mate anytime. Once patched a ARC VTM120 to it..I think that was a bare minimum amplification, moreover I'll not play lullaby music on these speakers to put me to sleep. With the 4343's BE ready to really ROCK man! cheers cheers

I heard two huge horn JBLs a long time ago, back when the hifi circle was smaller and friendlier. I forgot the model and searched google for half an hour today but can't find a photo of what I heard. Basically it was around 4 feet tall and almost as wide, with 15" woofer and horns with front diffusor like fins. Then with smaller driver which was for midrange I remember being told.

One was built locally by an enthusiast, the other bought as a used unit. One was driven initially by a pair of DIY SET amps and a Bryston power for the woofer. The other was driven by a Krell KSA-200S. Both sound very good and I have fond memories of listening to pieces like Carmina Burana from the system. They were using turntables and CD players.

This is why I dare say I can understand why there are fans of this speaker and of SET amps.

Hmmm.... looks familiar, it is very likely to be this speaker. After playing with DIY SET and Bryston for the woofer, the owner changed to Krell. First KSA-80, then KSA-200, and it was going up all the way, with drastic improvement for each step and every time the Telarc Carmina Burana will sound better and better. That began my introduction to the world of 'strong' amps. It is perhaps a testament to the JBL that when the owner changed speakers, he went for an Apogee.
