Re: Malaysia - Negeri Sembilan Audiophiles Group
It was raining cats and dogs yesterday. Glad that we managed to get the party to go on.
So many nice songs and some 80's disco tracks too. Ah.. And that red sexy vinyl spinning.

Actually, here is a new theory to try out.
Since there are both the short and tall apogee speakers in the same room, the owner just needs to wire up BOTH the Apogees in a SERIES configuration. Then the effective impedance would become 6 + 6 = 12 Ohms nominal ! As a 12 Ohm combo-speaker, any dingbat tube amp would also be able to drive them already!
Problem Solved !!!

The sneak peek on concert today is something we may do in one of the gathering. Just watch and relax. We need someone to sponsor red wine. Unfortunately, mikapoh is too far away. Sigh...

Please don't try this, there are more than just halving the impedance when you paired the Apogee, check you amp if it can handle the load first.mugenfoo wrote:WongKN wrote:He needs a 'stronger' amplifier for those speakers.

Yes, you are right; the rack needs to go. I was using the same rack when I started hifi, it slowed down my audio journey . Don't make the same mistake like I did.car o scope wrote:Huh?? Re: Malaysia - Negeri Sembilan Audiophiles Group
Hi Mikapoh,
Hifi racks is where every of your equipment is sitting, it is rather important to ensure it is doing a job more than mere lifting the equipment above the ground for your maid to sweep the floor below it . A misconception I had.
Rack in hifi application to me has a lot to do with resonance & vibration control in the chain, handling all the 4-modes of vibrations.
We have high tendency to overlook the importance of rack simply it contributes "no sound" to our audio system, but little do we know that rack could stifle our system's performance. Give it a good rack, volume of our pre drops yet we get more dynamics & energy, less lethargic too. Our amp would be more happy to sing for us.
Regards, Jo Ki

I will tune my system for that purpose. We will... we will ROCK you!

Hi Carz, carz wrote:Joki wrote "Rack in hifi application to me has a lot to do with resonance & vibration control in the chain, handling all the 4-modes of vibrations."
Joki - can you explain the 4 modes of vibrations ?
There are vibration in active mode...
1. structural borne from speakers' spike to floor travelling upward to your racks and to your equipment.
2. self generated vibration within your equipment, from transformer, spinning CD, etc...
3. vibration generated by your other equipment sitting on the same rack but on different platform affecting each other like power conditioner, power supply sitting on lower rack marring the equipment above it...
And more passively,
4. Sound energy propagate in air borne mode inducing resonance causing our equipment to vibrates. this is particularly acute in a more powerful speaker system.
Apart from the abovementioned 4 modes, there is also the element of physical sciences, the metallurgy of material of racks related to the density or mass vs. equipment that it carries. Alongside this, there is gravitation load transfer paths back to mother Earth, all these affect our system sounding.

Have been paying much attention in listening to music and ignored much about the dust below the racks. Took the opportunity to do some clean up during the replacement holiday. Was a good exercise too, especially when carrying fragile things around.

Sure Danny Summer will be on show. Perhaps 1 or 2 tracks from 1st, 2nd & 3rd Albums. Jess Lee will be on board too. Bring your Collective Soul, Nirvana, MJ, U2, Red Hot C.P. CDs etc. Let see whether this so-call vintage set up can really rock or not. NS

The Collective Soul album is very good. Played the whole album yesterday to give the Minor some exercises after long hibernation.

I would say some handicap should be given to the Jap right before the start. The Brit might be a bit slow in terms of loading time and song selection but it has more body and presented us an easy listening session. The gain is a tad lower and need to crank up the volume. If the timing was right, the Brit would have compared against the more dynamic American. Anyway, we can roughly guess the outcome even if the timing wasn't right.
We did switch back to the Jap for the final few tracks. There is nothing wrong with the Jap and it just sounds thinner than the Brit. Given the price gap, the Jap is a very good buy indeed. After that night, I have started to search for one or two albums that were played that night.
